The Instagram Reels bonus program still exists in 2026, but only as an invite-only test for select creators in Japan, South Korea and the United States, and a reels bonus invite needs at least 5 million views across three months. Instagram publishes no pay rate. Gifts, Subscriptions, badges and brand partnerships are the four routes open without an invitation.
The Instagram Reels bonus program still exists in 2026, but only as an invite-only test: Instagram says it is trialling a bonus for reels with select creators in Japan, South Korea and the United States. You cannot apply, an account needs at least 5 million reel views across the previous three months to be considered, and the Reels Play deals of 2021 and 2022 stopped being offered to US creators in March 2023.
Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on bonus program rules, general bonus rules, enabling bonuses and payouts, Instagram's Bonuses page for creators, and Meta's July 2021 and November 2023 announcements. History that Meta did not publish itself comes from Tubefilter's reporting, linked where it is used.
That is a long way from what most people searching for the program remember, which is a button in the app and a monthly target. This page covers what the program is today in Instagram's own words, how it got here, what the public record says about pay, and the four ways to earn from the same reels that do not need an invitation. If you want the full ranking of methods first, start with how to monetize Instagram in 2026.
Instagram Reels bonus program: status in 2026
The program is live, small and closed. Instagram's bonus rules page describes two tests running side by side, and the wording is careful throughout: limited time, select creators, testing.
| Rule | What the Help Center says |
|---|---|
| Status | A limited-time test: "Only a select group of creators are invited" |
| Bonuses on offer | A bonus for reels, and a separate bonus for photo and carousel posts |
| Countries | Select creators in Japan, South Korea and the United States |
| Who can be invited | Aged 18 or older, professional account, located and with tax status in one of those countries, inside the monetization policies |
| Reels bonus minimum | At least 5 million views across the previous 3 consecutive calendar months; aggregator accounts are excluded |
| Selection | Cohorts are invited from time to time; not all eligible creators are selected |
| Earning window | Each reel or post can earn for up to 28 days; the most recent 150 pieces count in each 2-week period |
| Payout | Around the 7th and 21st of each month, for 2-week periods of the previous month |
- Checked when Instagram reviews eligibility, not once
- Meeting it does not mean you will be selected
- Aggregator accounts are excluded

Two details change how you should read older advice. First, there is a published view minimum now, so "post more and hope" is not a strategy; an account either clears 5 million views in three months or it is not in the pool. Second, the countries are named. If you do not have tax status in Japan, South Korea or the United States, the reels bonus is not something to wait for.
The same page lists photo and carousel view minimums for more places, including 500,000 a month in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, while still stating that bonuses are invite-only in the three named countries. Read that as a sign of where tests may go next. It is not open eligibility.
Could your account be invited? A two-minute check
You can rule yourself in or out without waiting for a notification. The reels bonus has four fixed conditions and one number, and all of them are visible from your own account.
- Country and tax status. Japan, South Korea or the United States. Where your followers live is irrelevant; the rule is about you.
- Account type and age. A professional account, with a birthday that makes you 18 or older.
- Policy standing. Open Settings, then Creator or Business, then Monetization status. Any violation listed there has to be resolved first.
- Views. Open Insights, tap Views and set the window to the last 90 days. The rule counts the previous three calendar months, so this is an approximation, but an account at 800,000 is not close and an account at 6 million is.
- Originality. Instagram excludes aggregator accounts and counts only original reels toward the bonus. A feed of other people's clips fails here whatever the view count.
The originality condition is the same rule that governs recommendations. Instagram's original content guidelines say accounts that primarily post content they did not create or materially edit may not be shown to new audiences at all, which makes 5 million views hard to reach in the first place. Our explainer on the Instagram shadowban covers how that limit shows up in Account Status.
If you pass all five, you are in the pool, and selection is still Instagram's call. If you fail the first, nothing you post changes it, and the alternatives further down are the better use of the next hour.
What happened to the Reels Play bonus
The bonus people remember was a launch incentive, and it was scaled back once Reels no longer needed one. Meta introduced it in July 2021 as part of a pledge to invest over $1 billion in creators by the end of 2022, and wound the US version down a few months after that period ended.
- July 2021Launch
Meta pledges over $1 billion for creators by the end of 2022. A Reels Summer bonus opens in the US, by invitation.
- April 2022Payouts shrink
Creators report Reels Play payouts cut by up to 70%, according to Tubefilter. These were creator reports, not Meta data.
- March 2023US deals stop
Meta says it will stop extending new and renewed Reels Play deals for US Instagram creators and on Facebook.
- November 2023Invite-only return
A holiday bonus is tested in the US, South Korea and Japan, paying on reels plays and photo views.
- April 2024Spring Bonus
A new invite-only test covers reels, carousels and single images. Business Insider reports a $30,000 cap over 30 days.
- February 2026Breakthrough Bonus closes
Meta's US program for creators new to Facebook or Instagram stops accepting applications on February 26.
- October 2026Two tests listed
The Help Center describes a reels bonus and a photo and carousel bonus, both invite-only.

Meta's own explanation came in two parts. In March 2023 it told Tubefilter it would "stop extending new and renewed Reels Play deals" and would look at running the program "in a more targeted form". Existing deals were honoured for 30 days. Then, at an Instagram event in October 2023, Adam Mosseri said Instagram "couldn't afford to run" the program in the United States, and that the rebuilt version was, in his words, "more sustainable", as Tubefilter reported the following April.
- Offered to US creators by invitation, deal by deal
- Paid on reel plays only
- Monthly viewership targets with a projected payout
- Part of a pledge of over $1 billion through 2022
- A test for select creators in three countries
- Reels, plus a separate photo and carousel bonus
- Needs 5 million reel views in three months to be considered
- Paid per 1,000 qualified views, adjusted by audience and engagement
How a reels bonus invite works
An invite arrives in the app, not through a form. Instagram says invited creators see it in the professional dashboard and may also get a banner or an email, and that the invitation can expire if you do not respond before the bonus period ends.
- 01Invite
Professional dashboard, Settings icon, Bonuses
- 02Activate
Agree to the incentive terms and program rules
- 03Post
Original, public, not branded, boosted or a collab
- 04Qualified views
Logged-in viewers, repeat views excluded
- 05Approximate earnings
Shown with an average RPM on the bonus screen
- 06Payout
Around the 7th and 21st of the month
The fine print decides what you are actually paid for. Instagram counts qualified views, which are fewer than the views you see in Insights: viewers must be logged in, repeat views are excluded for reels, and views from your own profile do not count. For the reels bonus, only original content is counted. Branded content, boosted content and collaborative posts earn nothing, and a reel you delete is not paid.
Three more terms are worth knowing before you plan around an invite. A deal period can expire and need renewing. Instagram says your earnings rate may vary over time. And some invitations carry a minimum milestone: fall short of it and the earnings are forfeited. You also need a payout account in place before the bonus period ends.
If you were told you had an invite and cannot find it, or a message offering a bonus looks suspicious, our troubleshooting page on the Instagram reels bonus not being available covers where it lives and how to spot a fake.
Instagram bonuses beyond reels: the photo and carousel bonus
Instagram bonuses are no longer only about reels. The second test pays on carousels and single image posts, and its entry rule is a monthly view minimum held for three consecutive months, set by region.
| Region | Monthly views, 3 months in a row |
|---|---|
| United States | 5 million |
| South Africa | 2 million |
| South Korea | 1 million |
| Ireland | 1 million |
| Japan | 500,000 |
| United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand | 500,000 |
| Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway | 500,000 |
Two rules differ from the reels bonus. Posts that include music can earn, and a video placed inside a carousel earns under the post bonus. The exclusions are the same: branded content, boosted posts and collaborations are left out. Because the page lists these regions while describing the bonuses as invite-only in Japan, South Korea and the United States, treat the other rows as published thresholds without a confirmed test behind them.
For photographers, illustrators and carousel-led educators this is the more relevant test, since it was built for the formats they already post. The practical advice is the same: check the dashboard monthly and do not reshape your content around it.
Instagram bonuses and pay: what the public record shows
Instagram has never published a rate, and the numbers in circulation are a handful of reports from past tests. What it does publish is the formula. Average RPM is your approximate earnings divided by qualified views, multiplied by 1,000, and Instagram says it moves with where people watch, how much they interact, how long they watch and how much advertisers are willing to pay.
- 2021 to 2023: no official totals. Meta declined to tell Tubefilter how much it had paid out through Reels Play.
- April 2022: creators reported cuts of up to 70% to their payouts. These are creator accounts, relayed by the press.
- April 2024: Business Insider reported a maximum of $30,000 per creator over 30 days in the Spring Bonus, and two invited creators said they were seeing RPMs of 14 to 16 cents.
- October 2026: the Help Center gives view minimums and the RPM formula, and no rate.
That arithmetic is why chasing an invite is a poor use of a small account's time. Even on the reported figures, the bonus rewarded accounts that already had millions of views, and the minimum to be considered now says the same thing in writing.
Is the Instagram Reels bonus coming back?
In the form people mean, a bonus any creator can activate, nothing has been announced. Instagram's creators site still describes bonuses as "limited time and invite-only as we build toward a sustainable program", which is the same position it has held since the 2023 tests.
The pattern since then is consistent: short tests, a few countries, cohorts invited and released. The related programs follow it too. Meta's US Breakthrough Bonus, which paid creators new to Facebook or Instagram for sharing reels, stopped accepting applications on February 26, 2026. Plan on the assumption that bonuses stay a test, and treat an invite as a windfall if one arrives.
Four alternatives that pay creators now
Four routes are open today without anyone selecting you. Three are Instagram tools with published rules; the fourth is paid by brands.
| Route | Minimum | What pays you | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Gifts on reels | 500 followers; 49 listed countries | Viewers send Stars on a reel; Instagram pays $0.01 per Star | Switches on for eligible accounts |
| 2. Subscriptions | 10,000 followers; the same 49 countries | Followers pay a monthly price you set | Set up in the professional dashboard |
| 3. Badges on Live | 10,000 followers | Live viewers buy badges; capped at $250 per supporter per Live | Appears where it is offered |
| 4. Brand partnerships | 1,000 followers for Creator Marketplace; none if you pitch directly | The brand pays you, off the platform | Marketplace, or your own outreach |
- Gifts on reels are the closest replacement, because they pay on the same reels. The amounts are small and depend on viewers choosing to send Stars. If the option is missing, see Instagram gifts not available.
- Subscriptions pay monthly and repeat, which no bonus has ever done. Instagram subscription eligibility covers the rules and setup.
- Badges reward accounts that go Live to an audience that turns up. Our guide to going Live on Instagram covers the format.
- Brand partnerships are paid by the brand at a rate you negotiate; Instagram says creators whose content is used for partnership ads are paid off the platform. Check any inbound offer against our list of Instagram brand deal scams first.
The full per-feature rules, with countries and policy conditions, are in Instagram monetization requirements.
Two newer options are worth watching. Retail Dive reported in April 2026 that Meta is testing product tags with affiliate links in Reels for creators with more than 1,000 followers in five markets, and that Meta is not taking a commission on those sales for now. And if you already cross-post reels to Facebook, its Content Monetization program pays on reels there; Meta's March 2026 announcement says it is invite-only and that you can register interest from the professional dashboard in the Facebook app. The same announcement introduced Creator Fast Track: three months of fixed monthly payments for established creators, starting at 100,000 followers on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube, who post eligible reels on Facebook.
What to switch on at each milestone
Build in the order your account qualifies, and keep the bonus as a monthly check, not a goal. The milestones below are Instagram's published minimums; how many followers you need to make money on Instagram sets them beside what brands pay.
- 1Day one: professional account and payout details
Every Instagram tool needs both, and an invite is worth nothing without a payout account.
- 2Any size: one direct offer
A service, a small digital product or UGC work has no Instagram threshold.
- 3500 followers: Gifts
Look under Your Tools in the professional dashboard. It switches on for eligible accounts in supported countries.
- 41,000 followers: Creator Marketplace
Complete the profile so brands searching the marketplace can find you, and start pitching directly.
- 510,000 followers: Subscriptions and badges
Add recurring income once you can sustain exclusive content every month.
- 6Monthly: check Bonuses
Professional dashboard, Settings icon, Bonuses. An empty screen means no active invite.
Every step on that list depends on reels that people finish and share, which is also the only thing that could ever put an account near 5 million views. The system for making them, from hook to weekly review, is what Instagram Ignited teaches.
- Switch to a professional account if you are still on a personal one
- Open Monetization status and resolve or appeal any violation listed
- Add a payout account so no earnings are forfeited
- Open Professional dashboard, Settings icon, Bonuses to see whether an invite exists
- Check Your Tools for Gifts if you have 500 followers
- Strip third-party watermarks and reposts from the reels you have queued
- Make sure emails from Meta are not landing in spam
Instagram Reels bonus program: FAQ
Is the Instagram Reels bonus program still available?
Yes, but only as an invite-only test. Instagram's Help Center, checked October 2026, says it is testing a bonus for reels and a bonus for photo and carousel posts with select creators in Japan, South Korea and the United States. The original Reels Play deals stopped being offered to US creators in March 2023. There is no public version that any account can switch on.
How do I join the Instagram Reels bonus program?
You cannot apply. Instagram invites cohorts of creators from time to time and says not all eligible creators are selected. To be considered you must be 18 or older, hold a professional account, be located and have tax status in Japan, South Korea or the United States, follow the monetization policies and have at least 5 million reel views across the previous three calendar months.
How much does the Instagram Reels bonus pay?
Instagram publishes no rate. It shows invited creators an RPM, the amount earned per 1,000 qualified views, and says it varies with audience location, engagement and advertiser demand. The only public figures are reports: in April 2024 two creators told Business Insider they were seeing 14 to 16 cents per 1,000 views in a test capped at $30,000. Treat those as history, not a forecast.
Is the Instagram Reels bonus coming back?
It never fully left, and it has not returned as an open program. Since pausing Reels Play in 2023, Instagram has run a series of invite-only tests, and its creators site still describes bonuses as limited time and invite-only as it builds toward a sustainable program. No date for public eligibility has been announced. Checked October 2026.
Which countries have Instagram bonuses?
Instagram's bonus program rules name three: Japan, South Korea and the United States, and require you to be located and have tax status in one of them. The same page lists photo and carousel view minimums for several other countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, but still describes the bonuses as invite-only in the three named. Checked October 2026.
Why did Instagram stop the Reels Play bonus?
In March 2023 Meta told Tubefilter it would stop extending new and renewed Reels Play deals for US creators on Instagram and for creators on Facebook, and would look at running the program in a more targeted form. Later that year Adam Mosseri said Instagram could not afford to run the program in the United States, and that a rebuilt version was more sustainable.
What can I use instead of the Instagram Reels bonus?
Four things are open without an invitation. Gifts on reels start at 500 followers. Meta Creator Marketplace, for brand partnerships, starts at 1,000. Subscriptions and badges on Live start at 10,000. Selling your own service or product has no follower rule at all. Each depends on an audience that responds, which is the same work a bonus would reward.
No invite? Build the income you can switch on yourself.
Instagram Ignited, included in All Access, covers the Reels system plus Story selling, affiliate offers and brand deals, the income a small audience can pay you directly, with the other three programs, live coaching and the private community in one subscription.
