You need no followers to make money on Instagram from your own services, products or UGC work. Instagram's own tools set minimums: 500 followers for Gifts, 1,000 for Meta Creator Marketplace and 10,000 for Subscriptions and badges, while bonuses depend on views and an invitation. Marketplace data shows most brand collaborations are small, so the count that matters is how many followers fit your offer.
You need no followers at all to make money on Instagram from your own service, product or UGC work, 500 followers to earn from Gifts, 1,000 to join Meta Creator Marketplace for brand deals, and 10,000 for Subscriptions and badges. The number is set by the income path, not by Instagram as a whole, and on the paths with no minimum the real limit is how many people trust you enough to buy.
Thresholds checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages for Gifts, Subscriptions, badges, bonuses, Creator Marketplace and the Partner Monetization Policies. Pricing figures come from Collabstr's 2026 Influencer Marketing Report. Nothing here is a prediction of what any account will earn.
How many followers to make money on Instagram: the findings
- Zero is a real answer. Instagram sets no follower minimum for selling your own services, products or UGC work, or for linking to outside affiliate programs.
- 500 is the first Instagram threshold. Gifts on reels open there, in 49 listed countries.
- 1,000 opens the brand tools. Meta Creator Marketplace requires it.
- 10,000 opens recurring income. Subscriptions and badges on Live both start there.
- Bonuses ignore follower count. They need 5 million reel views across three months and an invitation.
- Most brand money is small. In Collabstr's marketplace data, about 80% of paid collaborations cost the brand under $300.

Sources and method
This is a desk study, not a survey. We did not collect earnings from creators, and no reliable public dataset shows what a typical Instagram account earns, so this page does not pretend to have one.
- Thresholds are taken from the Instagram Help Center page for each tool, read in October 2026. Where a page gives no number, the table says so.
- Pricing comes from a single source: Collabstr's 2026 report, which analysed more than 21,000 paid collaborations and more than 472,000 listed packages on its own marketplace, covering activity in 2025.
- Examples with made-up inputs are labelled illustrative. Rules of thumb are labelled as rules of thumb.
How many followers to get paid by Instagram itself
Between 500 and 10,000, depending on the tool, and never followers alone. Every Instagram tool also requires a professional account, an owner aged 18 or older, an eligible country and a clean record under the monetization policies.
| Income path | Minimum followers | Other gates | Who pays you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own services and products | None | None set by Instagram | Your customers |
| UGC work for brands | None | None; the brand pays for content, not reach | The brand |
| Links to outside affiliate programs | None | Each program's own rules; disclose with the paid partnership label | The affiliate program |
| Gifts on reels | 500 | Professional account, 18+, one of 49 countries | Instagram, per Star |
| Meta Creator Marketplace | 1,000 | Public professional account, 18+ | The brand, off the platform |
| Subscriptions | 10,000 | Professional account, 18+, one of 49 countries | Subscribers, via app stores |
| Badges on Live | 10,000 | Professional account, 18+ | Live viewers, via app stores |
| Bonuses | No follower rule | Invite-only; 5 million reel views in 3 months; Japan, South Korea or the US |
Three things in that table are easy to misread. A minimum is access, not income: Gifts at 500 followers pay $0.01 for each Star a viewer chooses to send, which on a small account is a top-up. Country matters as much as count: an account with 50,000 followers outside the 49 listed countries cannot switch on Gifts or Subscriptions. And the bonus row has no follower number because the rule is written in views.
The full conditions for each tool, including the country lists and what gets an account excluded, are in Instagram monetization requirements. For why bonuses are out of reach for most accounts, see the Instagram Reels bonus program.
Minimum followers to earn on Instagram without its tools: zero
The paths with no minimum are the ones a small account should start with, because they pay per buyer and not per thousand viewers. Instagram is the shop window; the sale happens in your DMs, your checkout or a brand's contract.
- Services. Coaching, editing, design or management for the people already asking you how you do it.
- Your own digital product. A template, guide or preset that solves one problem your followers have.
- UGC work. Brands pay for the content itself and post it on their own channels, so your reach is beside the point. Our guide to what UGC creators charge covers pricing.
- Outside affiliate links. A bio or Story link to a program you already use. Instagram says content featuring an affiliate link should carry the paid partnership label.
None of this is automatic. A direct offer needs a clear niche, proof you can deliver and a path from post to purchase. What it does not need is permission from Instagram.
How many followers for brand deals
A deal you arrange yourself has no minimum, and Meta's own marketplace starts at 1,000 followers on a public professional account. Instagram's monetization policies also expect an established presence with "a sufficient follower base", and give no figure.
What brands pay is where expectations need adjusting. Collabstr's marketplace data is the most concrete public picture of ordinary deals, as opposed to celebrity ones.

- Over $1,0002%

The same report puts the average listed price of an Instagram package at $214, and warns that a listed price reflects the creator's own valuation while the payout is the negotiated figure. Two more reference points from Meta: campaigns created in its Creator Marketing Hub must offer at least $100 in compensation, and payment happens off the platform.
A common starting point for quoting is $10 per 1,000 followers per post. That is a rule of thumb, not data, and it lines up with the distribution above only loosely: under it, a 10,000-follower account quotes $100. Use it as an opening number and adjust for what the brand is really buying. Our brand deal rate calculator is built for AI personas, but the follower-based math and the usage-rights adjustments are the same for any account.
- Roughly how many people could see a post
- Whether you clear the marketplace minimum
- Which tier label an agency files you under
- Views and engagement on your recent posts
- Audience fit: location, age and interests
- Content it can reuse as ads, with usage rights
- Reliability: the brief met, the deadline kept
Brands check the right-hand column before they reply. Work out your own figures with the engagement rate calculator before you pitch, read building a personal brand for brand deals for media kits, and run any inbound offer past our list of Instagram brand deal scams. Small accounts are a common target for fake offers.
How the thresholds have moved
The numbers are not fixed. Since 2023 the Gifts minimum has dropped by a factor of ten, and bonuses have gone from broad US deals to a three-country test. A guide written two years ago will be wrong on at least one of them.
- July 2021Bonuses arrive, by invitation
Meta launches Instagram bonuses as part of a pledge of over $1 billion to creators through 2022.
- March 2023US Reels Play deals stop
Meta stops extending new and renewed Reels Play deals for US Instagram creators.
- November 2023Gifts at 5,000 followers
A Meta creator update lists at least 5,000 followers for Gifts as it expands the feature.
- April 2026Product tags tested from 1,000
Retail Dive reports Meta testing product tags with affiliate links in Reels for accounts over 1,000 followers, in five markets.
- October 2026Gifts at 500; bonuses by views
The Help Center lists 500 followers for Gifts, and 5 million reel views in 3 months for a bonus invite.

The practical consequence: check the Help Center page for a tool on the day you plan around it. Each one is linked in the source line under the introduction.
What this means at your size
Each band adds options; it does not replace the ones below it. An account with 20,000 followers that still sells a service is using the path with the fewest gates.
| Followers | Open to you | Where to put the effort |
|---|---|---|
| Under 500 | Your own services, products and UGC work; outside affiliate links | One offer, one clear niche and proof you can deliver |
| 500 to 999 | All of the above, plus Gifts on reels in supported countries | Reels people finish; switch Gifts on and carry on |
| 1,000 to 9,999 | Plus Meta Creator Marketplace, and product tags in Reels where the test is live | A media kit, a rate you can explain and direct pitches |
| 10,000 and up | Plus Subscriptions and badges on Live | Recurring income from the core audience |
| Any size, by invitation | Bonuses, with millions of views in a test country | A windfall, never the plan |
Growth still matters, because every row depends on an audience that responds. If you are working toward the next band, how to get 10K followers is the playbook, and Instagram Ignited covers the positioning, Reels and Story selling behind it, so the account can sell while it grows.
- Professional account switched on, creator or business
- A bio that says who you help and what with
- One offer with a price and a way to pay
- A path from a reel to the offer: bio link or DM keyword
- Payout account added, so Instagram tools pay out when they unlock
- Monetization status checked, with no open violations
- Paid partnership label used on every sponsored or gifted post
- A record of views and engagement on your last ten posts, ready for a brand
Limitations
- One marketplace is not the market. Collabstr's figures describe deals on its platform, which skew toward small budgets, and its price bands cover every platform, not Instagram alone.
- Listed prices are not payouts. The $214 Instagram average is what creators asked, and the report itself says negotiated payouts differ.
- No tier table. We found no public source with a stated method that breaks rates down by follower tier, so this page does not print one.
- Thresholds change. The Gifts minimum has already moved from 5,000 to 500. Treat every number as dated October 2026.
- Country lists apply. A follower count that qualifies in one country may open nothing in another.
Followers and making money on Instagram: FAQ
How many followers do you need to make money on Instagram?
None, if you sell your own service, product or UGC work, because Instagram sets no minimum for those. Its own tools have minimums: 500 followers for Gifts on reels, 1,000 for Meta Creator Marketplace, and 10,000 for Subscriptions and badges on Live, each with age, country and policy rules as well. Bonuses depend on views and an invitation, not followers. Checked October 2026.
How many followers do you need to get paid by Instagram?
The lowest published minimum is 500 followers, for Gifts on reels, where Instagram pays $0.01 for every Star viewers send. Subscriptions and badges need 10,000. Reaching a minimum only switches the tool on; you are paid when viewers gift, subscribe or buy badges. Instagram does not pay a salary or a general rate per follower at any size. Checked October 2026.
Can you make money on Instagram with 1,000 followers?
Yes. At 1,000 followers a public professional account can join Meta Creator Marketplace, where brands look for partners, and Gifts on reels are already open from 500. More usefully, nothing stops a 1,000-follower account selling a service, a digital product or UGC work directly. Income at that size depends on how well the audience fits the offer, not on the count.
How many followers do you need for brand deals?
There is no official number for a deal you arrange yourself; a brand can pay any account it likes. Meta Creator Marketplace asks for at least 1,000 followers, and Instagram's monetization policies expect an established presence with a sufficient follower base, without naming a figure. In practice brands judge recent views, engagement and audience fit before follower count.
How much do brands pay small Instagram accounts?
There is no official rate. Collabstr's 2026 report, based on more than 21,000 paid collaborations on its marketplace, found that about 80% cost the brand under $300 and only 2% exceeded $1,000, across all platforms. The average listed price for an Instagram package was $214, and the report notes that what creators list and what they are finally paid often differ.
Does Instagram pay you when you reach 10,000 followers?
No. Passing 10,000 followers makes a professional account eligible for Subscriptions and for badges on Live, provided the owner is 18 or older, lives in a supported country and has no monetization policy violations. Money arrives only when followers subscribe or Live viewers buy badges. There is no payment for reaching the number itself.
Below the next threshold? Grow on purpose, and sell before you get there.
Instagram Ignited, included in All Access, covers positioning, Reels, Story selling, affiliate offers and brand deals, so an account can sell to a small audience while it grows toward each minimum, with the other three programs, live coaching and the private community in one subscription.
