Restrict is a quiet limit you put on one account. Their new comments on your posts are visible only to them until you approve them, their messages land in Message Requests where you can read them without a read receipt, and they cannot see when you are online. Instagram does not notify them. Unlike a block, they can still find, view and follow you.
Restricting someone on Instagram means their new comments on your posts are visible only to them unless you approve them, their messages move to your Message Requests, and they can no longer see when you are online or whether you have read their messages. Instagram does not tell them, and unlike a block, they can still find your profile, see your posts and follow you.
Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages Restrict or unrestrict someone on Instagram and What happens when you block someone, and Instagram's own guide Block, Mute, Restrict, Report: what's the difference? Where Instagram says nothing, this page says so.
What happens when you restrict someone on Instagram?
Four things change, all on your side of the relationship. The person keeps using Instagram normally and sees almost nothing different, which is the point. That makes it useful for the classmate, coworker or relative you cannot visibly block without starting a bigger problem.
- Comments go into a holding area. Their new comments on your posts are visible only to them. You see a hidden comment and can tap See comment, then Approve to show it to everyone, delete it, or ignore it.
- DMs move to Message Requests. Your existing chat moves out of your main inbox, and future messages go to requests automatically. You can read them without the person knowing you have seen them.
- Your activity goes dark to them. They cannot see when you are online or whether you have read their messages.
- Tags and notifications stop. Instagram's guide says they cannot tag or mention you or remix your content, and you get no notifications for their future comments.
- Your profile, posts and stories, as before
- Their own comments on your posts, looking normal
- Their messages sent, but no Seen receipt
- No online or activity status for you
- No notice that anything changed
- Their new comments hidden behind See comment
- Approve, Delete or ignore on each one
- Their chat in Message Requests
- Their messages, read without a read receipt
- No notifications for their comments
Two things do not change. Restrict does not remove them as a follower, which is a separate action, and it does not delete comments they left before you restricted them. If the person is a stranger piling on with others, Instagram's Limits setting hides comments and messages from groups of accounts at once, which is faster than restricting people one by one. The Instagram account help hub lists every privacy and account fix we cover in one place.
Can they tell if you restrict them?
Not from a notification: Instagram's guide says restrict lets you limit someone discreetly, without alerting them. They can only guess from what goes missing, and each of those signs has an innocent explanation too.
- Your Active now status never appears, even when you post (you could also have turned activity status off)
- Their messages never show Seen (you could also just not have opened them)
- Their comments get no likes or replies from anyone else, because nobody else can see them
- A friend looking at your post from another account cannot find their comment, which is the one real test
- Tagging or mentioning you no longer works
The comment test is the giveaway, and it only works if they suspect something and ask a friend to check. Approve a comment now and then if keeping the restrict invisible matters to you. Our post on how to tell if someone blocked you on Instagram walks through the same detective work from the other side, including how to tell a restrict from a block.
Restrict vs block vs mute vs unfollow
Pick by what you want to happen, not by how angry you are. Restrict keeps the connection and hides it. Block ends it. Mute is only about your own feed. Unfollow is the one the other person can see.
| Restrict | Block | Mute | Unfollow | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Hides their new comments, moves DMs to requests, hides your activity from them | Cuts them off: no search, no viewing, no messages | Hides their posts, stories or notes from you | Removes their posts from your Following feed |
| Are they notified? | No ("without alerting them") | No | Not stated; nothing changes on their side | Not stated; your name leaves their followers list |
| Can they view your content? | Yes | No | Yes | Yes, unchanged |
| Their comments on your posts | New ones visible only to them until you approve | Old ones removed; cannot comment | Unchanged | Unchanged |
| Their messages | Go to Message Requests; no read receipts | Not delivered, now or later | Unchanged unless you mute the chat | Unchanged |
| Online status and read receipts | Hidden from them | No chat to show them in | Unchanged | Unchanged |
| Tags and mentions | Cannot tag, mention or remix you | Cannot tag or mention you | Unchanged | Unchanged |
| Best for | Someone you cannot or will not visibly cut off | Harassment, or anyone you want gone | Content you are tired of seeing | Ending the follow, openly |
Restrict and block rows from Instagram's restrict and block help pages; mute from Instagram's restrict, mute and block guide. Checked October 2026. Instagram's help pages do not say whether mute or unfollow sends a notification, so the table says so rather than guessing.
One block detail people miss: when you block someone, Instagram removes their likes and comments from your posts, and unblocking does not bring them back. Restrict is reversible with nothing lost, which makes it the safer first move when you are not sure yet.
How to restrict someone on Instagram
There are four places to do it in the app, and they all do the same thing. The profile route is the fastest when you know who it is.
- 1Open their profile
Tap their username on a post or story, or search for it.
- 2Tap Options in the top right
The menu icon at the top of their profile.
- 3Tap Restrict
The same menu shows Unrestrict if you change your mind.
The other three routes, from Instagram's help page:
- From a comment. Open the comments on your post, tap and hold the comment, then tap Restrict account.
- From messages. Open the chat, tap their name at the top, tap Options, then Restrict, and confirm.
- From settings. Go to your profile, tap the menu in the top right, then Restricted under "How others can interact with you", tap Next, search for the account and tap Restrict.
The settings route is also the list of everyone you have restricted. On the Instagram Lite app for Android, Instagram says you can only restrict someone from their profile.
How to unrestrict someone
Use any of the same routes and tap Unrestrict instead. The quickest is your profile, the menu, Restricted, then Unrestrict next to their name, because you do not need to find their profile or an old chat.
When restrict is the right call
Restrict suits low-grade friction: the person who leaves a snide comment on every post, an ex you share friends with, a client who messages at midnight. It keeps the peace because nothing visibly changes. For creators, it also means a persistent critic cannot drag a comment section down while you decide what to do.
- 01Do you feel unsafe or harassed?
Block, and report. Instagram's guide says reporting is anonymous.
- 02Do you just not want to see their posts?
Mute. Nothing changes for them.
- 03Do you want them to stop seeing your account?
Block, or remove them as a follower if your account is private.
- 04Do you want their comments and DMs out of sight, quietly?
Restrict.
Comment control is a growth issue as much as a safety one, because a calm, useful comment section keeps people reading and replying. Building that kind of community around an account is part of what our Instagram Ignited program covers in its community and sales phase.
Looking for "my account is restricted"?
That is a different thing. Restrict, the setting on this page, is something you do to another person. A notice that your own account is restricted means Instagram has limited some of your features. That has its own causes and fixes, covered step by step in Instagram account restricted, blocked or disabled.
Restrict on Instagram: FAQ
What does restrict mean on Instagram?
Restrict is a quiet privacy setting you apply to one account. Their new comments on your posts are visible only to them until you approve them, their messages go to your Message Requests, and they can no longer see when you are online or whether you have read their messages. Instagram describes it as a way to limit someone without alerting them. Checked October 2026.
Can someone tell if you restrict them on Instagram?
Instagram does not notify them. Its own guide says the feature lets you restrict someone discreetly, without alerting them. They can only infer it: your online status and read receipts disappear for them, and their new comments stay hidden from everyone else. A friend checking from another account is the only way they could confirm the comment part.
Can a restricted person still see my posts and stories?
Yes. Restrict changes how they can interact with you, not what they can view. None of Instagram's restrict pages lists a limit on seeing your profile, posts or stories, and they stay a follower if they already were. If you want them unable to find or view your content at all, that is what a block does.
Does restricting someone delete their old comments?
No. Instagram's help page says restrict applies to new comments: those are visible only to that person unless you tap See comment and approve them. Comments they left before the restrict stay where they are. You can delete any of them by hand. Blocking is different, because Instagram removes a blocked person's likes and comments from your photos and videos.
Can a restricted person message me on Instagram?
Yes, but the chat moves out of your main inbox into Message Requests, and new messages from them go there automatically. You can read them without the person seeing that you have read them. From there you can delete the message, block them or unrestrict them. In a shared group chat you get a warning and can choose to stay or leave.
What is the difference between restrict and block on Instagram?
Restrict keeps the connection and hides it: they can still view your account, comment and message, but their comments are hidden and their messages go to requests. Block cuts the connection: they cannot find your profile, view your content or message you, and their past likes and comments are removed. Neither sends a notification, according to Instagram's help pages.
Is restricting someone the same as my account being restricted?
No. Restrict is a setting you apply to another person. An "account restricted" notice is Instagram limiting features on your own account, usually for activity that looks automated or breaks its guidelines. The fixes are completely different. If you saw a restriction notice about your own account, start with Account Status in your settings instead.
