Quick answer

You cannot hide your followers or following list on Instagram: there is no setting for it. A private account hides your posts and the private accounts in your lists from non-followers, but Instagram's Help Center says public accounts in your lists stay visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads. To keep one person out, remove them as a follower or block them; Restrict and Close Friends do not hide lists.

You cannot fully hide your followers on Instagram: there is no setting that hides your followers or following list, and on a public account anyone on Instagram can open both. Switching to private hides your posts and the private accounts in your lists from non-followers, but Instagram's own table says the public accounts you follow, and that follow you, stay visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on public and private accounts, making your account private, removing a follower, blocking, what blocking does, restricting and Close Friends. The steps below are the same taps on iPhone and Android unless we say otherwise.

What you can do is narrow who sees what, one setting at a time. This page shows exactly what each one hides and from whom, so you pick the right tool instead of the one a video promised. For blocks, limits and restrictions in general, the Instagram account help hub covers the rest.

How to hide the followers on Instagram: what each option hides

Five settings get suggested for this. Only two change who can see your lists, and both work on specific people or specific kinds of account, not on the list as a whole.

OptionWhat it hidesWhat it does not hideIs the person told?
Private accountYour posts from non-followers; private accounts in your lists from non-followersPublic accounts in your followers and following lists; your profile photo, name and bioNo. Business profiles must switch to personal first
Remove a followerYour private account's posts and lists from that person, until you approve them againNothing from anyone else. On a public account they can follow againNo, Instagram says
BlockTheir ability to follow, message, mention or tag you, including new accounts they createYour lists from everyone elseNo, Instagram says
RestrictYour online status and read receipts from them; their comments from othersYour lists. Restrict does not touch themNot stated in the article
Close FriendsStories, notes and reels you share only with the listYour lists. It is an audience setting for contentNo, Instagram says
Pick the setting by what you want
  1. 01
    Hide your posts from strangers

Make the account private. Personal accounts only.

  2. 02
Keep one person out of your lists and posts

Private account, then remove them as a follower.

  3. 03
    Cut someone off completely

Block them. It also covers new accounts they create.

  4. 04
Stay quiet with someone without a fight

Restrict. Hides your online status and their comments, not your lists.

  5. 05
Share some stories with fewer people

Close Friends. An audience for content, not a privacy setting for lists.

Does a private account hide your followers?

Partly, and the part it leaves visible surprises people. Instagram's public and private accounts table, checked October 2026, separates the accounts in your lists by their own privacy setting:

Who can seePublic accountPrivate account
Who can follow youAnyone on InstagramOnly people you approve
Public accounts you follow, and that follow youAnyone on Instagram and ThreadsAnyone on Instagram and Threads
Private accounts you follow, and that follow youAnyone on InstagramYour followers
Your photos and videos on your profile and in feedAnyone on InstagramYour followers
Your posts in search, Explore, hashtag and location pagesAnyone on InstagramNo one

Read the second and third rows together. A private account hides the private accounts in your lists from anyone who does not follow you. The public accounts in your lists are visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads either way. If your goal is to stop strangers seeing that you follow a particular public brand, creator or person, going private does not do it.

Private account: what strangers still see
Hidden from non-followers
  • Your photos and videos on your profile and in feed
  • Your posts in search, Explore, hashtag and location pages
  • Private accounts you follow
  • Private accounts that follow you
Still visible
  • Public accounts you follow
  • Public accounts that follow you
  • Your profile photo, name, username and bio

From Instagram's Help Center table, checked October 2026.

Make your Instagram account private
  1. 1
    Go to your profile

Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.

  2. 2
    Tap Menu

In the top right of your profile.

  3. 3
    Tap Account privacy

Under the heading "Who can see your content".

  4. 4
    Turn on Private account

Then tap Switch to private to confirm. Expected: only people you approve can follow you from now on.

Two limits apply. Instagram says business profiles cannot be private; you switch back to a personal account first, which removes the business tools. And accounts of people under 18 are private by default, with under-16s needing a parent's permission to go public. If you run the account for growth, think before you switch: a private account's posts cannot appear in Explore, search or hashtag pages for non-followers, which is where new followers find you. Our guide to restricted accounts covers the other things that quietly cut reach.

How to hide your following list on Instagram

The same rules apply, because Instagram treats both lists the same way. There is no separate switch for Following. On a private account, the private accounts you follow are hidden from non-followers; the public accounts you follow are not.

In practice that leaves three honest options if one follow is the problem:

  • Unfollow the account. Open their profile, tap Following, then Unfollow. Instagram's unfollow article says people are not notified. Nothing else removes a public account from your Following list.
  • Narrow who can see private follows. Go private and remove the followers you do not want looking.
  • Follow from a separate private account. Accounts you follow from a private personal profile that nobody you want to avoid follows are only as visible as the table above allows.

Hide your followers from one person: remove them

Removing someone takes them out of your followers, and on a private account they then need your approval to follow you again. Instagram's remove-a-follower article says "they won't be notified that you've removed them" and describes the option for private accounts. On a public account anyone can follow again straight away, so removing them achieves little there.

Remove a follower
  1. 1
Go to your profile and tap Followers

At the top of your profile.

  2. 2
    Find the person

Scroll or search the list for their username.

  3. 3
Tap the X to the right of their name

Then tap Remove to confirm. Expected: they leave the list and your count drops by one.

  4. 4
    Check your account is private

If it is public they can follow you again at once, and see your public lists anyway.

Remember that removing a follower only works on the person you remove. The public accounts in your lists stay visible to them through any other logged-in account, and to everyone else. If the person is the problem, rather than the list, blocking is the stronger tool.

Block: cut one person off completely

Blocking is the strongest setting Instagram gives you. Its remove-a-follower page says you can block someone "to get them to stop following you," and that people are not notified. The block article adds that blocking from the app covers their account, other existing accounts they may have, and any new accounts they create.

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu in the top right.
  2. Under "Who can see your content," tap Blocked.
  3. Tap Add in the top right, search for the person and tap Block next to their name.
  4. Tap Block at the bottom to confirm.

Instagram's what happens when you block page lists the rest: their likes and comments come off your posts (unblocking does not restore them), they cannot mention or tag you, and messages they send are not delivered. It does not spell out what a blocked person sees of your lists. If you are wondering whether someone did this to you, read how to know if someone blocked you on Instagram.

Restrict and Close Friends: useful, but they do not hide lists

Both get recommended for this, and neither touches your followers or following list. They solve different problems.

Restrict and Close Friends, side by side
What it does not do
Hides when you are online and whether you read their messages. Their new comments show only to them unless you approve
Shares chosen stories, notes and reels with a short list. Members see a Close friends label and may see a green ring
What it does
Does not hide your posts, your lists or your counts. Their chat moves to message requests
Does not hide your lists or your profile. Nobody can request to join, and nobody is told when added or removed
Restrict
Close Friends

From Instagram's Help Center articles on restricting and on Close Friends, checked October 2026.

Restrict is the quiet option when blocking would start an argument; our explainer on what restrict means on Instagram goes through it screen by screen. Close Friends lives under "Who can see your content" in the menu, and you add or remove people with Select and Done.

What does not work

Claims to ignore
  • A "hide followers" toggle in Settings. Instagram's privacy articles describe none
  • Apps that promise to hide your lists or your counts. They need your login, and Instagram warns that gives complete access
  • Switching to a business account. Business profiles cannot be private at all
  • Close Friends as a privacy setting. It only picks who sees stories, notes and reels you share to it
  • Restrict as a way to hide your lists. Its article lists online status, read receipts, comments and message requests, nothing else

If you are going public on purpose, the Instagram Ignited program starts with niche and profile setup, so the account people see is the one you meant to build. To keep an eye on the list you cannot hide, see how to see recent followers on Instagram and our map of the safe ways to track followers.

Hiding followers on Instagram: FAQ

Can you hide your followers list on Instagram?

Not completely. Instagram has no setting that hides your followers or following list. On a public account anyone on Instagram can open both. Going private hides your posts from non-followers and hides the private accounts in your lists, but Instagram's Help Center says the public accounts you follow, and that follow you, stay visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads. Checked October 2026.

Does making your Instagram private hide your following list?

Only partly. Instagram's public and private accounts table says that on a private account, private accounts you follow and private accounts that follow you are visible only to your followers. Public accounts in those lists are visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads, the same as on a public account. So a private account hides some names, not the list.

How do I hide my followers from one person?

Remove them as a follower or block them. Instagram says a removed follower is not notified, and its remove-a-follower article describes the option for private accounts, where they would need your approval to follow again. Blocking stops them following you, messaging, mentioning or tagging you, and covers new accounts they create. Neither hides the public accounts in your lists from everyone else.

Does Close Friends hide followers on Instagram?

No. Close Friends is an audience for stories, notes and reels you choose to share with a smaller group. It does not change who can see your followers or following list. Instagram says people are not notified when you add or remove them, but members do see a Close friends label on what you share with them, and may see a green ring.

Does restricting someone hide my followers from them?

No. Instagram's restrict article lists what changes: they cannot see when you are online or whether you read their messages, their new comments on your posts are visible only to them unless you approve them, and their chat moves to message requests. Nothing in it touches your followers or following list.

Can a business account hide its followers?

No. Instagram says business profiles cannot be made private at all; to go private, you switch back to a personal account first. That would also hide private accounts in your lists from non-followers, but public accounts in them stay visible, and you lose the business tools. For most brands, a visible list is simply part of being public.

Can I hide my follower count on Instagram?

Instagram's Help Center describes no setting for it. Its privacy table lists profile photo, name, username and bio as visible to anyone on or off Instagram, and gives no option to hide the follower or following counts on your profile. Be wary of apps that claim to hide them; they would need your login, which Instagram warns gives complete access to your account.
