To see recent followers on Instagram, open your notifications (the heart icon): new followers appear there newest first. The Date followed sort lives on your Following list, the accounts you follow, not on your Followers list, and Instagram documents no date order for anyone else's lists. For every follower in one file, export your followers from Accounts Center.
To see recent followers on Instagram, tap the heart icon at the top of your feed: Instagram notifies you when an account starts following you or requests to, and those notifications run newest first. The "Date followed" sort people talk about sits on your Following list (accounts you follow), not your Followers list, and Instagram offers no official way to see who someone else followed recently.
Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on how notifications work, push notifications, shared activity, exporting your information, spam followers, Insights and public and private accounts, plus Instagram's 2020 announcement of the Following sort as reported by Engadget. The Help Center does not document list order, so where we describe a menu, we say whether Instagram or a third party is the source.
This page covers new people following you, and the accounts you or someone else followed lately. If you are after who left, read how to see who unfollowed you on Instagram. For anything that looks like a limit or a block on the account, start at the Instagram account help hub.
How to see recent followers on Instagram: the six places
Instagram spreads this across six screens, and each answers a slightly different question. Pick the row that matches what you actually want to know.
| Where | What it shows | Whose account | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notifications (the heart icon) | New followers and follow requests, newest first | Your own account | A feed, not an archive. Spam-filtered accounts wait elsewhere |
| Your Followers list | Everyone who follows you now | Your own account; others where visible | No date sort documented. Likely spam sits under Potential spam |
| Your Following list, sorted | Accounts you follow, by date followed | Your own account only | The sort is for people you follow, not people who follow you |
| Shared activity on a profile | When you and one account started following each other | One account at a time | Mobile app and iPad only. Needs at least one of you to follow the other |
| Data export from Accounts Center | A file of all followers and all accounts you follow | Your own account | Up to 30 days to arrive, 4 days to download |
| Insights | How many followers you gained or lost | Public accounts with at least 100 followers | A count over up to 90 days. No names |
Instagram latest followers: check your notifications first
Notifications are the one place Instagram shows new followers as they arrive. The Help Center lists "starts following you or requests to follow you" among the things you can be notified about, and says to tap the heart icon in the top right to view them.
- 1Open the home feed and tap the heart icon
Top right of the screen. This opens your notifications. Expected: likes, comments, mentions and follows, newest at the top.
- 2Scroll for "started following you"
Each line names the account. Tap the name to open their profile, or the button beside it to follow back.
- 3Check Follow requests on a private account
Requests to follow you sit in the same feed. Tap Confirm or Delete. A denied person can send a request again.
- 4Open Potential spam
Profile, then your Followers count, then Potential spam. Accounts Instagram thinks are spam cannot follow you until you confirm them.

Two things go wrong here. First, notifications are a feed: older entries scroll away, and the Help Center says nothing about how long they are kept, so it is no record of who followed on a given day. Second, a follow from an account Instagram flags as likely spam never shows as a normal follower. The spam followers article says such accounts "can't follow you without your confirmation" and are filtered to a separate list in your Followers tab.
If you do not get follow alerts on your phone, look in Settings: the Help Center path is Profile, then the menu, then Notifications under "How you use Instagram." Turning a push alert off does not hide anything from the heart feed itself.
Can you sort your followers by date followed?
No. Instagram has never announced a date sort for the Followers list (people who follow you), and its Help Center does not describe how that list is ordered. Many guides claim the newest followers sit at the top. That may be what you see, but Instagram does not promise it, so do not rely on it.
For one person, there is a clean check. Open their profile, tap the three dots, then See shared activity. Instagram's shared activity page says it shows when you started following each other, as long as at least one of you follows the other. It works in the mobile app and on iPad only.
How to get a full, dated list of your followers
The data export is the only complete list Instagram gives you. It is your own copy of your data, requested from Accounts Center, and nobody else touches the account.
- 1Profile, then the menu, then Accounts Center
It may be labelled Meta Account. Then tap Your information and permissions.
- 2Export your information, then Create export
Pick the Instagram profile and tap Next.
- 3Choose Export to device
Export to external service sends files to a connected service on a schedule instead.
- 4Pick only followers and following
Set the date range to all time and choose a format. A smaller export comes back faster and holds no messages.
- 5Start export and wait for the email
Instagram says the link can take up to 30 days. It also shows under Available downloads.
- 6Download within four days
The file expires four days after it is ready. Save it with the date in the name.

Instagram does not document what each field in the file means. Third-party guides that work with the JSON version, such as this one on the HTML and JSON formats, report a timestamp beside each username, which they read as the date the follow began. Treat that as useful but unofficial: sort by it to see your latest followers, and do not quote it as Instagram's record.
Keep each export. Two files from different dates also show who left, which is the method in our free unfollower check.
Recently followed on Instagram: the accounts you followed lately
Here Instagram does give you a sort. On 6 February 2020 it announced changes to the Following list, reported by Engadget: categories for accounts you interact with least and see most in your feed, and a way to sort the accounts you follow by when you started following them.
- 1Open your profile and tap Following
This is the list of accounts you follow, not your followers.
- 2Tap the sort icon
The up-and-down arrows beside the search bar. Expected: a short menu with Default and two date options.
- 3Choose Date followed: Latest
Your most recent follows move to the top. Earliest flips the order.
- 4Use the categories to tidy up
Least interacted with lists accounts you have barely engaged with lately. Unfollow from there in small batches.

Unfollow slowly. Meta's spam policy covers engaging at very high frequencies, manually or automatically, and a burst of unfollows from a sorted list looks exactly like that. Our page on the Instagram follow limit per day explains why Instagram publishes no number and how to stay well clear.
Can you see who someone else recently followed?
Not officially. Instagram used to show this in a Following activity tab and removed it in October 2019; its head of product said people were surprised to find their activity on display, as 9to5Mac reported. The date sort only appears on your own Following list.
- 2011Following tab launches
A feed of the likes, comments and follows of accounts you followed.
- Oct 2019Following tab removed
The heart feed shows only activity on your own account from then on.
- Feb 2020Sort added to your own Following list
By date followed, plus least interacted with and most shown in feed.
- Oct 2026Help Center on list visibility
Public accounts in anyone's lists are visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads. List order is not documented.

You can still open another account's Following list where you are allowed to see it. Instagram's public and private accounts table says public accounts that someone follows, or that follow them, are visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads, even when that person is private; private accounts in their lists are visible only to their followers. What you cannot do is read the order as a timeline. Instagram does not say how those lists are sorted, and one third-party tracker, IGDetective, wrote in September 2026 that the order no longer reflects when follows happened. It says that comes from its own tracking, not from an Instagram announcement.
- Who they followed most recently, in order
- The date they followed any account other than yours
- Their activity feed of likes and follows
- Private accounts in their lists, unless you follow them
- Their follower and following counts
- Public accounts in their Followers and Following lists
- When you and they started following each other, via shared activity
- Their profile photo, name, username and bio, public or private
Insights: how many new followers, not who
If your question is "how many," Insights answers it without any names. Instagram's Insights article says free insights are available to public accounts, that follower trends appear once you have at least 100 followers, and that you can pick a range inside the last 90 days. The overview shows a New followers figure, and the follower section splits growth into gained and lost.
Use the count to decide whether a list is worth pulling. A spike after one reel tells you which post brought people in; our Instagram analytics hub covers where each metric lives. The Instagram Ignited program goes further, with a lesson on analyzing metrics so you can tell which content earned those followers and make more of it.
Apps that promise your recent followers
Be sceptical of any app that names recent followers or recent follows of other accounts. Meta's Instagram API reference gives a connected app a follower count, not the list of followers, so names must come from your password, your logged-in session or automated collection. Instagram's Help Center warns that apps given your login can gain complete access to your account.
- Does it ask for your Instagram password on its own screen? Leave
- Does it ask for a login code or for two-factor to be switched off? Leave
- Does it claim to show who another account followed recently? Instagram offers no such data
- Does it work only from a file you exported? That is the low-risk kind
- Does it read the file in your browser, without uploading it? Check before you use it
- Did you already give one your password? Change it and turn on two-factor today
Our ranking of Instagram unfollow apps by account risk and the guide to unfollow tools with no login go through the common types one by one.
Troubleshooting
- No sort icon on your Following list. Update the app. If it is still missing, the feature may not have reached your account or device; Instagram does not document it in the Help Center.
- A new follower is missing from the list. Look under Potential spam, then check whether they unfollowed again or deactivated.
- No follow notifications on your phone. Profile, menu, Notifications. Turning push alerts back on does not restore old ones; the heart feed still has them.
- Shared activity is missing. It needs the mobile app or an iPad, and at least one of you must follow the other.
- The export has not arrived. Instagram allows up to 30 days. Check Available downloads inside the export tool and request a smaller file with only followers and following.
- Followers dropping rather than rising. Read why your Instagram is not growing, which works through limits, reach and content in order.
Recent followers on Instagram: FAQ
How do I see my most recent followers on Instagram?
Tap the heart icon at the top of your home feed. Instagram's Help Center lists "starts following you or requests to follow you" among the things it notifies you about, so new followers appear there with the newest at the top. For a full list with every follower, export your followers from Accounts Center. Instagram does not document a date sort for the Followers list itself. Checked October 2026.
Can you sort your Instagram followers by date followed?
Not officially. The date sort Instagram announced in February 2020 is on your Following list, the accounts you follow, with options described as Date followed: Latest and Date followed: Earliest. Instagram's Help Center describes no sort for the Followers list. To see when people followed you, use your notifications for recent ones or a data export for everyone.
How can I see who someone else recently followed on Instagram?
There is no official way. Instagram removed the Following activity tab, which showed other people's follows, in October 2019, and the date sort only exists on your own Following list. You can open their Following list if you are allowed to see it, but Instagram does not document its order, so the top of the list is not proof of a recent follow.
Does Instagram show followers in chronological order?
Instagram does not say. Its Help Center explains who can see a followers list, not how the list is ordered, and accounts it thinks are spam are moved to a separate Potential spam list. Treat the order of any followers list as unknown. Your notifications are the only place Instagram presents new followers newest first. Checked October 2026.
Why can I not find a new follower in my notifications?
Notifications are a feed, not a record, and older entries scroll away. An account it considers likely spam cannot follow you without your confirmation, so it waits under Potential spam in your Followers tab instead. If someone followed and then unfollowed, they are gone from the list too. For a complete answer on a date, export your followers list.
Are apps that show recent followers safe?
The ones that show names usually are not. Meta's Instagram API gives a connected app your follower count, not the list of who follows you, so an app that lists recent followers by name is working from your login or from automated collection. Instagram's Help Center warns that apps given your login can gain complete access to your account.
