Instagram Follower Tracker: What Any Tracker Can See, and the Safe Ways to Track

An Instagram follower tracker can chart counts safely but cannot name followers through the official API. What trackers see, the risks and the built-in options.

Quick answer

An Instagram follower tracker can safely track numbers: Insights and apps on Instagram's official login show your follower count and daily follows and unfollows. Neither can name who followed or left, because the official API returns counts, not lists. For names, compare two of your own data exports; apps that ask for your password get names by logging in as you, which Instagram's terms forbid.

An Instagram follower tracker can safely track your follower numbers, but no tracker on Instagram's official connection can tell you who followed or unfollowed: Meta's API gives apps counts, not lists of people. For names, the safe tracker is Instagram itself, through two copies of your own data export; an app that shows names is logging in as you, which Instagram's terms forbid and its Help Center warns can hand over the whole account.

Checked October 2026 against Meta's Instagram API reference for an account, account insights and Business Discovery, Instagram's Terms of Use (effective 10 December 2025), and Help Center pages on apps and your login, connected apps, Insights, exporting your information and public and private accounts.

This is the map: what each kind of tracker can see, what it costs your account, and the built-in options that do the same job. If you only want to know who left, the step-by-step version is how to see who unfollowed you on Instagram. For every metric Instagram gives you and where it lives, see the Instagram analytics hub.

Instagram follower tracker options compared

There are six ways to track followers. Two give you names without risk, and they are both free and inside Instagram. Read the "Names?" and "Risk" columns together: the only option that adds names on top of the safe ones also adds the risk.

What can a follower tracker actually see?

Start with the data, because it decides everything else. An app that connects the proper way, through Instagram's own login screen, can read what Meta's API returns and nothing more.

  • Your follower count. The account reference lists followers_count, the "total number of Instagram users following the user," and follows_count for accounts you follow. No field or edge returns the list of followers.
  • Daily follows and unfollows, as totals. The insights reference has a follows_and_unfollows metric: the number of accounts that followed you and the number that unfollowed you. It is not returned for accounts with fewer than 100 followers.
  • Other accounts' counts. Business Discovery lets a business or creator account read public data, such as followers_count, about other business or creator accounts. Personal accounts are not covered, and age-gated business accounts return nothing.
Where a tracker's numbers come from
  1. 01
You log in on Instagram's screen

The app gets a token with the permissions you approve. It never sees your password.

  2. 02
    Meta's API answers

Follower count, follows and unfollows per day as totals, reach, views and other insights.

  3. 03
    The app stores each day

This is the tracking part: a chart built from daily snapshots of counts.

  4. 04
    No names arrive

The API has no list of followers. A tracker that shows names got them some other way.

That last box is the test to carry around. Any follower tracker that shows a list of new followers or unfollowers by name is not using the official connection for that list. The names come from your password, your logged-in session, a browser extension clicking through your account, or automated collection of profile pages.

Followers tracking on Instagram: the built-in tracker

For your own account, the best tracker is already in the app. Instagram's Insights article says free insights are available on public accounts, follower trends appear once you have at least 100 followers, and you can pick a preset or custom range inside the last 90 days.

Track followers in Insights
  1. 1
    Open Insights from your profile

Expected: an overview with Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared.

  2. 2
    Tap the followers figure

Follower growth splits into gained and lost, with top locations, age range and most active times.

  3. 3
    Change the time frame

Use the drop-down at the top. Any preset or custom range inside the last 90 days.

  4. 4
Write the numbers down once a week

Insights only looks back 90 days, so a note or sheet is what turns it into a long-term tracker.

  5. 5
    Match spikes to posts

Tap View insights under a post or reel to see whether it brought followers in.

Want a chart that keeps more than 90 days without manual notes? Any analytics tool that connects through Instagram's official login can store the daily count for you. Meta's platform overview says those apps need a professional (business or creator) account, so a personal account has Insights and the export only. The Help Center does not certify individual tools, so check the connection screen: it should be Instagram's or Facebook's login page asking you to approve permissions, never the app's own password box. Our Instagram creator tools hub sorts tools by job.

Follow tracker for Instagram with names: your own export

When you need names, Instagram hands them over as a file. The export tool in Accounts Center gives you your followers and following lists, and comparing two files from different dates shows who arrived and who left.

A monthly follow tracker built from exports
  1. Day 1
    Request the first export

Accounts Center, Your information and permissions, Export your information. Choose only followers and following.

  2. When ready
    Download within four days

Instagram says the link can take up to 30 days and expires four days after it is ready. Name the file with the date.

  3. Week 3
    Request the next export early

So it arrives before the month ends.

  4. Month end
    Compare the two followers files

Names in the old file and missing from the new one have left. The reverse are new followers.

  5. Same day
    Check the totals in Insights

If the counts and your list disagree, deactivated and spam-filtered accounts are the usual gap.

If remembering is the hard part, the same tool has Export to external service. You pick a service, connect it, choose how often to export and confirm with your password on Instagram's own screen. That is a scheduled tracker run by Instagram, delivering to a destination you chose. The spreadsheet formula for the comparison is in our free unfollower guide, and the recent followers guide covers the notifications and sort options for day-to-day checks.

Can you track someone else's followers?

You can see their count, and public accounts in their lists, and that is the whole of it. Instagram's public and private accounts table says public accounts that someone follows, or that follow them, are visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads, while private accounts in those lists are visible only to their followers.

Tracking another account: official versus promised
What some apps promise
  • Who they followed most recently
  • Who unfollowed them this week
  • A history of their follower list
  • Activity of a private account you do not follow
What Instagram actually offers
  • Their follower and following counts on the profile
  • Public accounts in their lists, in no documented order
  • For business and creator accounts, the count through Business Discovery
  • Shared activity: when you and they followed each other

Writing the public count into a sheet each week is a perfectly good tracker for a competitor or a creator you study. Anything beyond that needs automated collection, which Instagram's Terms of Use forbid: you may not access or collect information "in an automated way without our express permission."

The account risk of trackers that ask for your password

A tracker that asks for your username and password is the one kind to rule out. Instagram's Help Center says that if you give an app your login, by access token or by username and password, it can "gain complete access to your account," and that inauthentic activity can bring a "Try again later" error. The Terms of Use bar anyone from requesting or collecting Instagram usernames and passwords.

Red flags in a follower tracker
  • Asks for your Instagram password on its own page
  • Asks for your login code, or for two-factor authentication to be switched off
  • Shows the names of new followers or unfollowers after a quick scan
  • Claims to show who another account followed or who viewed your profile
  • Needs a browser extension that can read and change every site you visit
  • Has no Instagram or Facebook permission screen when you connect

Our ranking of Instagram unfollow apps by account risk and the guide to tools that claim to need no login walk through the common types and their own store listings.

If you already connected a tracker

  1. Change your Instagram password, then turn on two-factor authentication. Instagram's compromised-account steps start with both.
  2. Remove the app. Profile, menu, then under "Your app and media" tap Website permissions, Apps and websites, Active, and Remove. Instagram's connected apps page says a removed app may keep what it already stored and can still see public information.
  3. Check your contact details and remove any linked account you do not recognise in Accounts Center.
  4. Watch for errors. A "Try again later" message or posts you did not write mean the account needs the full compromised-account steps; the Instagram account help hub links them.
  5. Switch to the export for names and Insights for numbers from here on.

What is worth tracking at all

Follower names rarely change what you do next. The follower count and where it moved does: a jump after one reel shows a format worth repeating, and a steady loss after a change in topic shows you drifted from what people followed you for. Run the free engagement rate calculator beside your weekly count, and if reach fell first, the reach drop diagnoser walks through the likely causes.

Instagram follower tracker: FAQ

Is there a safe Instagram follower tracker?

Yes, if you mean tracking numbers. Instagram Insights shows followers gained and lost for public accounts with at least 100 followers, and apps that connect through Instagram's official login can chart your follower count without seeing your password. For names, the safe tracker is your own data export from Accounts Center, compared across two dates. Checked October 2026.

Can a follower tracker show who unfollowed me?

Not through Instagram's official API. Meta's reference gives a connected app your total follower count and, for accounts with 100 or more followers, how many people followed and unfollowed each day. It returns no list of who those people are. A tracker that names unfollowers is getting the names from your login or from automated collection instead.

Can I track someone else's Instagram followers?

Only their public follower count, and you can do that by opening their profile. Instagram's Business Discovery API lets one business or creator account read another business or creator account's follower count, but not personal accounts and not the list of followers. Apps that claim to show who another person followed recently have no official source for it.

Why do follower tracker apps ask for my password?

Because the official connection does not give them follower names, so the only way to produce a list is to log in as you. Instagram's Terms of Use forbid collecting information in an automated way without express permission and forbid anyone requesting or collecting Instagram usernames and passwords. Its Help Center warns that such apps can gain complete access to your account.

What happens if I already gave a tracker my Instagram password?

Change the password, turn on two-factor authentication, then remove the app under Website permissions, Apps and websites, Active. Instagram says a removed app can keep information it already stored and can still see public information. If your account starts posting things you did not write or shows a "Try again later" error, follow Instagram's steps for a compromised account.

How often should I track my follower count?

Weekly for the count and monthly for names is plenty for most accounts. Insights covers any range inside the last 90 days, so you lose nothing by checking weekly. A data export can take up to 30 days to arrive and expires four days after it is ready, so request the monthly one a few days early. Daily checks mostly show normal churn.
