Quick answer

The best Instagram scheduler for one account is the free one inside the Instagram app, with Meta Business Suite for Stories and desktop. Third-party schedulers earn their price on other jobs: Buffer and Publer for cheap cross-posting, Planoly and Later for a visual grid, Metricool for analytics and Hootsuite for teams. All of them share the Instagram API's limits.

The best Instagram scheduler for most creators in 2026 is the one already inside the Instagram app: it schedules reels, photos and carousels up to 30 days ahead, 25 a day, for free. Add Meta Business Suite for Stories and a desktop calendar, and pay for a third-party tool only when you need something Instagram does not do: cross-posting, a visual grid planner, analytics in the same place or team approvals.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center on scheduled posts and reels, Meta's content publishing guide, and the pricing pages and help centers of Buffer, Later, Metricool, Planoly, Publer, Pallyy and Hootsuite. This comparison is built from what each vendor documents. We did not run a posting test, and no link on this page is an affiliate link.

Most scheduler lists rank by commission. This one ranks by what a creator needs from the tool: can it publish a reel without your phone, a carousel, a Story, a first comment, and what does one account cost. It belongs to the schedule step in our guide to the best Instagram tools.

Best Instagram scheduler: the nine compared

The two free tools from Meta cover the basics. The seven others differ mainly in price model and in how they handle Stories and first comments.

The honest free-tier table

Free plans are real, but each one is capped in a different unit: posts a month, posts in the queue, or formats. Match the cap to how you post before you build a habit on it.

ToolFree allowanceWhat the free plan leaves out
Instagram app25 posts a day, 30 days aheadStories, product tags, collab posts and sponsored posts
Meta Business SuiteNo post cap in its help pagesA scheduled first comment
Buffer3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel at a timeFirst comment, hashtag manager, advanced analytics
Publer3 accounts, 10 scheduled posts per account at a timeBulk scheduling, follow-up comments, more than 24 hours of post history
Metricool1 brand, 20 scheduled posts a monthMore than 30 days of analytics, hashtag search, reports
Pallyy1 social set, 15 image posts a monthVideo and carousel scheduling
Later12 posts per profile a monthCarousels and Stories. Listed in the help center, not on the pricing page
Planoly10 uploads a month, mobile app onlyThe web planner
HootsuiteNo free plan, 14-day trialEverything after the trial

Two caps are easy to misread. Buffer and Publer limit how many posts sit in the queue at once, so a daily poster refills every ten days but never runs out for the month. Metricool, Pallyy and Later count posts per month, so twenty reels in a month is the ceiling whatever your rhythm.

Start here: schedule in the Instagram app

If you run one account, this is the scheduler to try first. It needs no connection, no permissions and no second login, and a post scheduled natively is published by Instagram itself.

Schedule a post or reel in the Instagram app
  1. 1
Tap Create, then Post or Reel

    Your account must be public.

  2. 2
Select the photo or video, then Next

    Carousels work: select several items.

  3. 3
Write the caption and finish your edits

Do everything you would do for a normal post.

  4. 4
    Tap More options

Turn on Schedule this post or Schedule this reel.

  5. 5
    Pick the date and time

Up to 30 days ahead. Tap Done, then Back.

  6. 6
    Tap Schedule

Expected result: the post appears under Menu, Scheduled content, where you can edit, reschedule or share it now.

The limits are few: 25 scheduled posts a day, and no product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts or fundraisers. Stories are not part of it, which is the main reason to add Meta Business Suite. Business Suite schedules posts, reels and Stories from a computer or its mobile app and gives you a month calendar.

Instagram scheduling tools, one by one

Each entry gives the dated price, what it does well on Instagram, and who should skip it.

Buffer: the cheapest way to cross-post

Buffer prices per channel: free for up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, then $5 a month per channel on Essentials or $10 on Team, billed yearly (checked October 2026). It publishes posts, carousels, reels and Stories automatically for professional accounts, and falls back to a phone notification for things the API will not carry, such as music on a post or a link sticker. First comment scheduling is on paid plans. Skip it if you only post to Instagram.

Later: the visual planner

Later's Starter plan is $18.75 a month on yearly billing for one social set, one user and 30 posts per profile; Growth is $37.50 and Scale $82.50 (checked October 2026). Paid plans add carousels, Stories and a scheduled first comment. Its help center still lists a Free plan with 12 posts per profile a month and no carousels or Stories, though the pricing page leads with a 14-day trial. Skip it if 30 posts a month is tight.

Metricool: scheduling plus analytics

Metricool's free plan covers one brand, 20 scheduled posts a month and 30 days of analytics. Starter starts at $20 a month on yearly billing, or $25 monthly, for 5 brands (checked October 2026). It auto-publishes posts, carousels, reels, Stories and trial reels. Its first comment works on feed posts only, not reels. Skip it if you never open an analytics tab.

Planoly: grid-first planning

Planoly is built around seeing the feed before you post. Starter is $14 a month for one social set and one user, Growth $24 and Pro $47, with a 14-day trial and a free plan on the mobile app limited to 10 uploads a month (checked October 2026). It auto-posts feed posts, reels and carousels with first comment, and Stories for business accounts. Skip it if your content is mostly reels and the grid is an afterthought.

Publer: per-account pricing

Publer's free plan allows 3 social accounts with 10 scheduled posts each. Professional is priced per account, from $5 a month for one according to its help center, and adds bulk scheduling and follow-up comments (checked October 2026). It lists carousels of up to 10 photos and direct Stories for business accounts. Skip it if you need video inside carousels.

Pallyy: per-brand pricing

Pallyy charges per social set, which means per brand however many networks it posts to: $25 a month for Pro, with a free plan of 15 image posts a month (checked October 2026). Video and carousel scheduling are paid. Skip the free plan if you post reels.

Hootsuite: the team tool

Hootsuite has no free plan. Standard starts at $99 a month per user with 10 social accounts, and higher plans add automated inbox replies and content approvals (checked October 2026). Its help center says direct publishing with a first comment works for business profiles, and Stories go through a mobile notification. Skip it unless several people need approvals and one inbox.

What every third-party scheduler has in common

They all publish through the same Instagram API, so they share its limits. No vendor can sell you a way around these.

  • Professional accounts only. Automatic publishing needs a business or creator account. Later and Hootsuite no longer connect personal profiles at all.
  • Ten items per carousel. Meta's publishing guide limits API carousels to 10 images, videos or a mix. Planoly's help center notes that the Instagram app itself allows more.
  • A daily ceiling. The guide caps an account at 100 API-published posts in 24 hours, with a carousel counting as one. Individual tools quote lower numbers.
  • No shopping tags or filters. Meta lists both as unsupported through the API.
  • Stories are plain. Links and interactive stickers have to be added in the app.

A scheduled first comment is the one feature only third-party tools offer. Whether it is still worth having is a separate question, covered in our guide to Instagram first comment hashtags.

Stay on the free Meta tools if
  • You run one Instagram account
  • You post reels, photos and carousels of normal length
  • You are happy to add Story links by hand
  • Insights inside Instagram answer your questions
  • Nobody else needs to approve a post
Pay for a scheduler if
  • The same post goes to three or more platforms
  • You plan the grid visually before you shoot
  • You report numbers to a client every month
  • A second person drafts and you approve
  • You want one calendar for every channel

A scheduler decides when a post goes out, not whether it is worth posting. For timing, our guide to the best time to post on Instagram shows how to read your own audience data, and how often to post covers a cadence you can keep. The harder half is filling the queue: our Instagram Ignited program covers batch filming a month of reels in a day and a four-week test for posting times and frequency.

Before you pay for any scheduler

Five-minute check
  • Schedule one week in the Instagram app first and note what you could not do
  • Count the platforms you post to every week, not the ones you plan to start
  • Check the price unit: per channel, per brand, per social set or per user
  • Compare the monthly price with the yearly one before you commit to twelve months
  • Confirm the tool connects through Meta's login screen and never asks for your Instagram password
  • Find out which of your post types fall back to a phone notification
  • Use the free plan or trial for two weeks of real posts before you enter a card

The price unit is where bills surprise people. On yearly billing, five channels on Buffer Essentials cost $25 a month and five brands on Metricool Starter cost $20. One Hootsuite user costs $99 whether you connect one account or ten. None of those is wrong. They suit different shapes of work.

Best Instagram scheduler: FAQ

What is the best Instagram scheduler in 2026?

For one account, the scheduler inside the Instagram app: it schedules reels, photos and carousels up to 30 days ahead, 25 a day, for free. Add Meta Business Suite for Stories and a desktop calendar. Pay for a third-party tool only for a job Instagram does not do: Buffer or Publer for cross-posting, Planoly or Later for a visual grid, Metricool for analytics, Hootsuite for team approvals.

What is the best free Instagram scheduler?

Instagram itself, then Meta Business Suite; neither has a post cap that a solo creator will hit. Among third-party free plans, Buffer allows 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, Publer 3 accounts with 10 scheduled posts each, Metricool 20 posts a month for one brand, Pallyy 15 image posts a month and Later 12 posts per profile. Checked October 2026.

Can you schedule Instagram Reels for free?

Yes. Instagram's Help Center says a public account can schedule reels, photos and carousel posts from the app, up to 25 a day and up to 30 days in advance. Meta Business Suite also schedules reels at no cost. Free plans from Buffer, Metricool and Later cover reels too, inside their monthly or queue limits. Checked October 2026.

Which Instagram scheduling tools support first comment?

Buffer on paid plans, Later on paid plans, Planoly, Metricool for feed posts but not reels, Hootsuite for posts and reels sent by direct publishing, and Publer through follow-up comments on its Professional plan. All of them need a business or creator account and automatic publishing. Instagram's own scheduler and Meta Business Suite do not offer a scheduled first comment.

Can schedulers auto-post Instagram Stories?

Some can, with limits. Meta Business Suite schedules Stories directly. Buffer and Metricool auto-publish plain Stories; anything with a link or an interactive sticker falls back to a phone notification so you can finish it in the app. Later, Planoly and Publer auto-publish Stories for business accounts only, and Hootsuite sends Stories through its mobile notification workflow.

Is it safe to use a third-party Instagram scheduler?

Yes, when the tool connects a business or creator account through Meta's official login and publishes through the Instagram API. That is the route Meta built for scheduling, and its publishing guide sets a ceiling of 100 API-published posts per account in 24 hours. Avoid any app that asks for your Instagram password or offers to like, follow or comment for you.

How far ahead can you schedule Instagram posts?

In the Instagram app, up to 30 days in advance and up to 25 posts a day, on a public account. Product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers cannot be scheduled there. Third-party tools set their own horizons and usually let you plan further out, but they publish through the same API and inherit its limits, such as 10 items per carousel.
