Instagram Reel Drafts: Recover, Find and Restore Lost Drafts

Instagram reel drafts live only on the phone that made them. Where to find drafts, why they disappear, what you can still recover and the habit that stops loss.

Quick answer

Instagram reel drafts are stored on the phone that made them, not in your account: open Profile, Reels, then Drafts on that phone to find them. Uninstalling the app deletes drafts, they never sync to another device, and they are not in Recently deleted, so recovery usually means rebuilding from raw clips in your camera roll or an Edits project. Downloading drafts as you go is the habit that prevents loss.

To recover Instagram reel drafts, open Instagram on the same phone you made them on, go to your profile, tap the Reels tab and then Drafts; that is the only place Instagram keeps them. Drafts are saved on the device, not in your account, so if the app was uninstalled or you switched phones, Instagram cannot bring them back, and recovery means rebuilding from the clips you still have.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center on saving and editing reel drafts, restoring deleted content, exporting from Edits and saving a post as a draft.

This guide is part of our Instagram Reels guide. By the end you will know exactly where drafts live on each device, why they vanish, which recovery paths are real and which are myths, and a simple habit that means you never lose a finished edit again.

How to find drafts on Instagram

Reel drafts and post drafts sit in slightly different places. For reels, Instagram's Help Center gives this path:

Open your reel drafts
  1. 1
Use the phone you made the draft on

Drafts are saved to that device only.

  2. 2
    Tap Profile

Or your profile picture in the bottom right.

  3. 3
    Tap the Reels tab

    Below your profile info.

  4. 4
    Tap Drafts

Expected result: a grid of every reel draft saved on this phone.

  5. 5
Tap a draft to keep editing

Add clips, music, effects, stickers and text, then save again or share.

Feed posts can be saved as drafts too; Instagram has a separate help page for post drafts. If you do not see a Drafts tile on your Reels tab at all, you have no reel drafts saved on this device.

Where drafts actually live

The single most important line in Instagram's drafts help page is this: "Drafts are saved onto your device. You won't be able to access a saved draft from another device, even if you log in to your account. If you uninstall the app, your drafts will be lost."

Everything else follows from it. Your posted reels live on Instagram's servers and follow your account anywhere. Your drafts live in the app's storage on one phone. They do not move to your tablet, they do not come with you to a new phone, and they are not included when you log in somewhere else.

Drafts versus shared reels
Reel drafts
  • Stored on one device
  • Not visible on other devices, even logged in
  • Deleted when the app is uninstalled
  • Not in Recently deleted
  • No limit on how many
Shared reels
  • Stored with your account
  • Visible on any device you log in on
  • Survive reinstalling the app
  • Deleted reels sit in Recently deleted for 30 days
  • Can be archived or restored

Instagram drafts disappeared: what happened

When drafts vanish, it is almost always one of the causes below. Find yours, then read the recovery column honestly: some losses are recoverable, and some are not.

What happenedWhy drafts are goneCan you get them back?
Uninstalled or reinstalled the appDrafts are deleted with the appNot from Instagram; check camera roll and Edits for raw clips
New phone or factory resetDrafts stay on the old device, or are erased with itOnly if the old phone still has the app installed
Looking on a different deviceDrafts never sync between devicesYes, open Instagram on the phone where you made it
Deleted the draftDrafts are not in Recently deletedNot from Instagram; rebuild from clips
Shared it by mistakeShared reels can be deleted and restoredIf you then deleted it, Recently deleted holds it for 30 days

Instagram reel drafts: recover what you can

There is no restore button for drafts, and Instagram support cannot pull them from your account because they were never in it. These are the paths that actually work, in the order to try them.

Recovery order
  1. 01
    Check the original device

If the old phone still has Instagram installed, the drafts are there.

  2. 02
    Check Edits

Edits projects stay in the app until you delete them; export again.

  3. 03
    Check your camera roll

Search for the raw clips or any draft you downloaded.

  4. 04
    Check your cloud photo backup

Clips you recorded with the phone camera may be backed up there.

  5. 05
    Check Recently deleted

Only if the reel was shared and then deleted; it holds it for 30 days.

  6. 06
    Rebuild

Re-edit from the clips you found, using your notes for text and audio.

  1. The original device. If you made the draft on an old phone, tablet or a partner's phone and the app is still installed there, open Profile, Reels, Drafts on that device. This is the only full recovery path.
  2. Edits projects. If you built the reel in Instagram's Edits app, the project remains in Edits unless you delete it, according to the Help Center. Open it, tap Next, and send it to Instagram again. Edits can also save a draft to Instagram that stays linked to the project.
  3. Your camera roll. Clips you filmed with your phone's camera or imported from it are still there unless you deleted them. A draft you downloaded earlier is there too.
  4. Cloud backups. If your phone backs up photos and videos to a cloud service, look there for clips that were deleted from the phone.
  5. Recently deleted. Instagram's Recently deleted holds photos, videos, reels and stories you shared and then deleted for 30 days. It does not list drafts, so it only helps if the reel was actually posted at some point.

What does not work: logging out and back in, logging in on another device, or contacting support to restore a draft. None of those reach the storage on the phone where the draft lived.

The save-your-work habit that prevents loss

Drafts are a workspace, not storage. Once an edit is worth keeping, give it a second home. Instagram offers two ways to save a reel in progress:

  • Save draft: tap Next on the reel you are recording, tap Next again, then Save draft. It stays on this phone.
  • Download: tap Next, then Download, to save the reel to your camera roll. Instagram notes this will not save any music you added from the Instagram music library.
Before you close the app on a draft
  • Save draft inside Instagram
  • Download a copy to your camera roll
  • Write the audio track name and timestamp in your notes
  • Copy the caption and on-screen text into your notes
  • Keep the raw clips until the reel is posted
  • Never reinstall Instagram with unsaved drafts on the phone

If you edit on more than one device, do the heavy editing in one place and treat the downloaded file as the master. When the reel is ready, post it from the phone that has the draft. If you work in Edits, remember that changes made in Edits after you export are not applied to the copy already in Instagram; export again before you post.

Switching phones? Move your drafts first

Because drafts never travel with your account, a phone upgrade is the moment most creators lose a folder of half-finished reels. Do this on the old phone before you wipe or trade it in:

  1. Open Profile, Reels, Drafts and count what is there, so you know what you are moving.
  2. Post or delete what is finished or dead. A finished reel is better shared than carried across as a file.
  3. Download each draft you are keeping. Open it, tap Next, then Download. The file lands in your camera roll; library music will not be in it.
  4. Write down the audio and the caption for each one, so you can rebuild the parts the download does not keep.
  5. Transfer your camera roll with your usual phone migration or cloud backup, and check the files open on the new phone.
  6. Only then wipe the old phone. Until you do, it is your one full backup of every draft.

On the new phone, start a new reel from the downloaded file, add the audio again from Instagram's library, paste the caption, and save it as a fresh draft. It is a few minutes per reel, which is far less than editing again from raw clips.

Instagram drafts or Edits projects: which is safer?

Both are tied to a device, so neither is a cloud backup. The difference is in what they keep. An Instagram draft holds a reel in Instagram's own editor. An Edits project holds the full multi-layer edit, and the Help Center says the project "will still remain as a project in Edits" after you export, unless you delete it. If you edit seriously, keeping the master in Edits and exporting a fresh copy when needed gives you one more place to recover from. Note one limit from Instagram's Edits help: licensed audio over 60 seconds is not included when you export a video.

Troubleshooting drafts that will not save or open

  • Save draft is missing. Update the app, and check you are in the reel flow rather than a story or a live video.
  • A draft opens without its music. The licensed track may no longer be available to your account or region; Instagram says licensing agreements can change. Pick another track from the audio library.
  • The draft is there but the phone is full. Free up space before editing further; an app crash mid-edit can lose your most recent changes.
  • The reel posted but got almost no reach. That is a different problem from drafts. Our free Instagram reach drop diagnoser and the checklist on why Reels stop getting views walk through the causes.

Losing a draft hurts most when a reel took an hour to edit. The fix is a workflow that makes each reel faster to build in the first place. Our guide to Reels text overlays covers one of the slowest parts to redo, and Instagram Ignited teaches the full Reels production routine, from scripting hooks to batching edits so no single draft carries a week of work.

Instagram reel drafts: FAQ

Where are my reel drafts on Instagram?

Go to your profile, tap the Reels tab below your profile info, then tap Drafts. That folder only shows drafts saved on the phone you are holding. Instagram's Help Center says drafts are saved onto your device, so a draft made on another phone or tablet will not appear here even when you are logged in to the same account. Checked October 2026.

Can I recover Instagram reel drafts after deleting the app?

Usually not from Instagram. The Help Center says that if you uninstall the app, your drafts will be lost, and drafts are not part of Recently deleted, which only holds content you shared and then deleted. What you can sometimes recover are the raw clips, if they are still in your camera roll, a cloud backup, or a project in the Edits app.

Why did my Instagram drafts disappear?

The common causes are uninstalling or reinstalling the app, switching to a new phone, looking on a different device than the one you used, or deleting the draft by accident. Instagram stores drafts on the device, not in your account, so anything that removes the app's local data can remove drafts with it. Logging in elsewhere never brings them over.

Do Instagram drafts sync between devices?

No. Instagram says you will not be able to access a saved draft from another device, even if you log in to your account. If you start a reel on your phone, you finish it on that phone. To move work between devices, download the draft to your camera roll or keep the project in Edits, then rebuild it where you need it.

Is there a limit to how many reel drafts I can save?

No. Instagram's Help Center says there is no limit to how many drafts you can save, and drafts stay until you share or delete them. That makes it tempting to keep dozens, but every one of them still lives only on one phone, so a long drafts folder is also a long list of things one reset could erase.

Does downloading a draft save the music?

Not music from Instagram's library. The Help Center says downloading your reel will not save any music you added from the Instagram music library. Download the draft as a backup of your edit and visuals, and note the track name in your notes so you can add the same audio again inside Instagram when you rebuild or post it.
