Quick answer

To make Canva templates to sell, build an original layout, use Canva library fonts and as few Pro elements as you can, create a template link from the Share menu and deliver it inside a short PDF. Canva only allows templates containing Pro content to be sold as template links, and buyers on free accounts see watermarks on Pro elements, so state what the template needs in the listing.

To make Canva templates to sell, design an original layout in Canva, build it with library fonts and as few Pro elements as the design allows, create a template link from the Share menu, and deliver that link to buyers, usually inside a short PDF. Canva's licence only lets you sell templates containing Pro content as template links, so the delivery method is a licensing decision, not just a convenience.

Licence terms and features checked October 2026 against Canva's help pages on designing products for sale, template links, premium elements and shared designs, the Content License Agreement, the Canva Creators page and Canva pricing, plus Etsy's digital listings rules. Quotes are Canva's wording. This is not legal advice; the agreement itself is the authority.

By the end you will have four things: a template that is yours to sell, a template link that works for a stranger, a delivery PDF, and two sentences for the listing that tell buyers exactly what they need. Templates are one product type among several, and our guide to creating a digital product covers the wider process of picking and validating one.

What Canva allows you to sell

Canva allows you to sell templates you designed, and does not allow you to resell its own. Its help page puts it in one line: "You can only sell original designs." It defines a template as a design with "a pre-determined layout and style which is intended to be further edited or customized by an end-user", and the Content License Agreement lists "design templates solely for use on Canva" among the permitted uses.

A Canva library template with colors or text changedNoNoRecoloring, resizing and cropping count as standalone use

The second row is the one that catches sellers. A single Pro photo or illustration in the design changes how you are allowed to deliver the whole thing. Canva's wording: "You can't sell templates with Pro Content as a PDF or other file types, whether flattened or not."

Originality is judged on effort, and Canva offers its own test: "Is what I'm selling a unique design that I've put creative effort into? Or am I just reselling content I've found on Canva with minimal changes?" Starting from a blank page is the simplest way to be sure of the answer.

How to make Canva templates to sell: the 2026 workflow

Eight steps from blank page to working link
  1. 1
Pick one buyer and one job

A realtor's open-house flyer set, not "business templates".

  2. 2
Set the sizes that buyer needs

One design per size, each with its own link.

  3. 3
Build the layout from a blank page

Your grid, your arrangement, your hierarchy.

  4. 4
    Use fonts from Canva's library

Uploaded fonts are tied to your account and may not follow the template.

  5. 5
Decide on Pro elements, and log them

Free-only is simplest for buyers. If you use Pro content, write down where.

  6. 6
Add placeholder content and a how-to page

Sample text that shows what goes where, and a first page that explains editing.

  7. 7
    Create the template link

Share, Template link, Create template link, Copy.

  8. 8
    Test it as a stranger

Open the link in a private window, then in a free Canva account.

Steps 1 to 3: a specific buyer, the right sizes, your own layout

A template sells when the buyer can see their finished document in it. That means a named use: a client welcome packet for wedding planners, a menu for food trucks, a listing presentation for real estate agents. Choose sizes from where the buyer will use it, such as US Letter and A4 for print or the platform's dimensions for social posts. Then build the layout yourself. Canva elements are ingredients; the arrangement has to be yours.

Expected result: one design per size, each recognisably the same product, none of them traceable to a Canva library template.

Steps 4 and 5: fonts and Pro elements

These two choices decide what the buyer sees when they open the template, and the section on what breaks below explains why. The short version: use fonts that ship with Canva, and either avoid Pro elements or keep a list of every one you used.

Expected result: a design with no uploaded fonts, and a note that says either "free elements only" or names each Pro element and the page it sits on.

Step 6: placeholders and instructions

Fill every text box with realistic sample content at a realistic length, so the buyer sees how much fits. Name the photo frames. Add an instruction page at the front of the design, or put the same notes in the delivery PDF: how to replace text, how to swap a photo, how to change the colors, how to download for print.

Steps 7 and 8: create the link, then test it

Open the design and select Share, then Template link. If you do not see it, select See all first. Select Create template link, then Copy. Canva says anyone with that link can view the design and use it as a template. The feature is limited to paid plans; the help page lists Canva Pro, Teams, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofits. Canva prices its plans by country, so check the pricing page for what Pro costs where you are.

Expected result: the link opens the template for someone who is not you. Test it in a private browser window first, then in a free Canva account, which is what many buyers have. Whatever looks wrong there is what your buyers will email you about.

Template link, PDF with link, or Canva's marketplace: the delivery decision

For most sellers the answer is a PDF with the template link inside, because it works on every platform and gives you room for instructions. The other routes fit narrower cases.

Canva's own marketplace is a different business. Through Canva Creators you apply, get approved, and publish templates into Canva's library for royalties. Template Creators are asked for a public portfolio link with 5 to 10 examples, and Canva says to "submit only work you created". You gain reach inside Canva and give up the price and the customer.

What breaks for buyers: Pro elements and fonts

Two things go wrong on the buyer's side, and both are decided while you design. The first is Pro content. Canva's help page states that "premium elements will have watermarks (criss-cross patterns) on your design until they're purchased." A buyer on a free account can clear them by clicking Remove watermarks on an element, by paying at download, or by upgrading. A buyer who was not warned sees a broken product.

The second is fonts. Canva's page on shared designs says that people outside a team account are "unable to see and edit custom fonts that may be exclusive to them", and its suggested fix is a copy "where the custom font is replaced with a standard Canva font". Template buyers are outside your account by definition, so build with fonts from Canva's library and the question never comes up.

Two ways to build, two different listings
Free elements only
  • Opens fully editable in a free Canva account
  • Can be sold as a template link or as a PDF
  • Smaller element library to design with
  • Listing note is one reassuring line
  • Fewest support emails
Includes Pro elements
  • Free-account buyers see watermarks on those elements
  • Can only be sold as a Canva template link
  • Full library of photos and illustrations
  • Listing must say what needs Canva Pro
  • Works well for buyers who already pay for Canva

Whichever way you build, say so before the sale. These two notes are written to paste into a listing description and the first page of the delivery PDF.

Design Canva templates for Etsy: packaging the listing

On Etsy the product you upload is the PDF, not the template. Etsy's digital listings take up to five files of 20MB each, and the buyer downloads them straight after paying. A good delivery PDF has three short pages.

  1. Page 1: access. A large button linked to the template, the same link written out in full underneath, and the Pro or free-only note.
  2. Page 2: editing. Five or six numbered steps with screenshots: open, replace text, swap photos, change colors, download.
  3. Page 3: terms. What the buyer may do with the template and what they may not, such as reselling it. Our terms of use template for digital products has clauses to adapt.

The listing images do the selling. Show the template filled in and in use, not on a blank artboard; our walkthrough on creating mockups in Canva for Etsy covers the free method. Before you set the price, run it through the free Etsy profit margin calculator, since Etsy's fixed fees weigh more on a low-priced template.

Pre-flight before you publish the listing
  • The layout is yours, not a recolored Canva template
  • No uploaded fonts anywhere in the design
  • Every Pro element is listed, or there are none
  • The link is a template link, not an edit link
  • The link opens correctly in a private window and in a free account
  • The delivery PDF has a button and the full link in text
  • The Pro or free-only note is in the description and in the PDF
  • Sizes and the software required are stated in the first lines of the description
  • The master design is in a folder you will not edit
  • You have a duplicate ready for future updates

Making Canva templates a business, not a one-off

One template is a test. A set for one buyer is a product line: the same realtor who bought the open-house flyer also needs a listing presentation, a just-sold postcard and a social pack in the same style. Build outward from whatever sells first, keep the style consistent, and bundle once you have three or more pieces.

Our Digital Products program picks up where this tutorial stops, with a template creation lesson for Canva and Notion and the pricing, funnel and launch modules that sit around it. For niche-specific detail, see our guides to selling social media templates, resume templates and wedding invitation templates, and to making spreadsheet templates if your buyers work in Sheets rather than Canva. If you have no site, selling digital products without a website covers which platform to start on.

Troubleshooting: the four emails buyers send

  • "There are watermarks on it." The template has Pro elements and the buyer is on a free account. Point them to Remove watermarks, or tell them which free element to swap in.
  • "The fonts look different from the pictures." A custom font did not carry over. Replace it with a Canva library font in a duplicate, create a new link for future sales, and send the buyer that link.
  • "The link does not work." The template link was deleted, or the PDF button points to the wrong URL. Check the link in a private window.
  • "I changed your template by accident." You sent an edit link to the original. Undo the changes in the master, switch that link off, and send a template link instead.

Making Canva templates to sell: FAQ

Can I sell templates I make in Canva?

Yes, if the design is original. Canva's help page says the templates need to be an original design and can combine Free and Pro Content. Templates that include Pro Content can only be sold as Canva template links, never as PDFs or other file types. Templates built only from Free Content and your own uploads can be sold as PDFs or as template links. Checked October 2026.

Do I need Canva Pro to sell Canva templates?

In practice, yes. The template link feature is only available on paid plans: Canva's help page lists Canva Pro, Teams, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofits. Without it you can only hand buyers an edit link to your original or an exported file. Canva prices its plans by country, so check its pricing page for the current cost of Pro where you live before you budget for it. Checked October 2026.

Do my buyers need Canva Pro to use the template?

Only if you build with Pro elements. A template made from free elements and Canva library fonts opens fully editable in a free account. If it contains premium elements, Canva shows them with a criss-cross watermark until the buyer purchases them or upgrades to a paid plan. Say which kind of template it is in the listing, before the sale.

Can I sell Canva templates on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy digital listings need an uploaded file, so sellers deliver a PDF that contains the Canva template link and short instructions. Etsy allows up to five files of 20MB each per listing. The design still has to be yours: Etsy requires digital items to be made or designed by the seller, and Canva requires the template to be original.

Can I edit an existing Canva template and resell it?

No. Canva says you cannot sell any Canva content on a standalone basis, and it treats changing colors, resizing, cropping or applying a filter as standalone use. A template you sell has to be a new layout that you built, using Canva content as ingredients alongside your own creative work, not a recolored copy of something from the Canva library.

Can I sell my templates on Canva itself?

Only through the Canva Creators program. You apply and must be approved, and Template Creators are asked for a public portfolio link with 5 to 10 examples. Approved creators publish to Canva's library and earn royalties instead of setting a price and selling to a customer. Canva says to submit only work you created. Checked October 2026.

What happens if I delete my Canva template link?

Every copy you sold stops working. Canva's help page says that deleting a template link makes the URL inactive, and creating a new one gives a new URL. Buyers who open the old link from their PDF will hit a dead page. Keep the original design and its link untouched for as long as the product is on sale, and make changes on a duplicate.
