To sell Canva templates on Etsy, design an original template, create a Canva template link, put the link in a short PDF and upload that PDF to an Etsy digital listing. On a $12 sale a US shop pays Etsy $1.59 and keeps $10.41, or $8.61 if the sale came through an Offsite Ad. Personal, one-off templates fit Etsy; business kits often fit Creative Market better.

Checked October 2026 against Canva's help pages on designing products for sale, template links and premium elements; Etsy Help on digital listings, payment processing fees and Marketplace Insights; Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and Creativity Standards; and Creative Market's help pages on shop earnings, opening a shop and its platform fee, plus its Canva Templates category as it stood on 11 October 2026. Fee figures are arithmetic on published rates at example prices. We have no sales data for either marketplace, and this page contains none.
This guide covers the selling side: what you are allowed to list, which kinds of template suit Etsy, the listing steps and the money. Building the template itself, including fonts, Pro elements and the delivery PDF, is in our tutorial on how to make Canva templates to sell. For everything else about the marketplace, the hub is our guide to selling digital products on Etsy.
Can I use Canva templates to sell on Etsy?
Your own, yes. Canva's, no. The question is typed into search both ways, and the two have opposite answers.
Canva's help page settles the first one with an example that could have been written for this article: Zahir, "a template designer who specializes in invitations", who "wants to use Canva to design wedding invitation templates to sell on Etsy". His templates that include Pro content are allowed "as long as Zahir is selling his templates as Canva template links". His templates made from free content and his own photos can be sold "as PDFs or as Canva template links".
- A Canva library template with new colors and fonts
- A template you bought from another seller, edited
- A design that is one Canva illustration plus a line of text
- A template with Pro content delivered as an editable file instead of a template link
- A layout you built from a blank page
- Free content and your own photos, as a PDF or a template link
- Pro content inside your layout, delivered as a Canva template link
- Canva elements used as ingredients, with your arrangement doing the work
Etsy's side of the rule is one sentence in its digital listings help: digital items "must be made and/or designed by you, the seller". Its Creativity Standards file digital downloads under "Designed by a seller", defined as sellers' original designs, and say Etsy may remove listings that do not follow its policies.
Who this works for
Etsy is the right first shelf for a Canva template seller who has no audience yet and makes things people buy for themselves. It is the wrong one in three cases.
- You already have an audience. A direct store keeps more of each sale and gives you the customer's email. Our comparison of where to sell digital products covers those.
- Your templates are working files for businesses. Large social kits, pitch decks and course workbooks have a different buyer, covered below.
- You want to design and never handle a customer. A marketplace shop means messages, reviews and refunds. Canva's own Creators program is the hands-off route, at the cost of price control.
The system: how a Canva template sale works on Etsy
Etsy sells and delivers a file. Canva hosts the product. The PDF is the bridge between them, and every support message you will ever get comes from one of the six handoffs below.
- 01Search
A buyer types an occasion or a job: "bridal shower invitation template".
- 02Your listing
A mockup, the sizes, and "edit in Canva" in the first image.
- 03Checkout
Etsy takes the payment and its fees.
- 04PDF download
The file Etsy delivers: one or two pages with your template link.
- 05Template link
Opens a copy in the buyer's own Canva account.
- 06Edit and export
They change the details, then download or print.
The PDF is not optional. Etsy's help page says you cannot publish or save an instant digital listing with no file attached, and a Canva template is a link, not a file. That is why every Canva template on Etsy arrives as a document with a button in it.
Best Canva templates to sell on Etsy, and the ones that belong on Creative Market
The templates that fit Etsy are bought once, by one person, for an occasion or a small business need. The ones that fit Creative Market are kits a designer or a business buys as working assets. Etsy publishes no sales by template category, so treat the table as a map of buyers, not a ranking of earners.
| Category | Who buys it | Where it fits | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wedding and party invitations | Someone planning one event | Etsy | Searched by occasion and bought once. It is also Canva's own example of a template sold on Etsy |
| Resumes and cover letters | A job seeker with a deadline | Etsy | Personal, urgent and low risk. Keep the layout simple enough to export as a clean PDF |
| Planner, budget and tracker pages | People organising their own life | Etsy | Sold as sets, edited once, then printed or used on a tablet |
| Menus, price lists, signs, gift certificates | Local businesses: salons, cafes, market stalls | Etsy | A one-off business need, searched by trade: "salon price list template" |
| Media kits and rate cards | Creators and freelancers | Etsy first | One document at one price suits Etsy. On Creative Market it belongs inside a larger brand pack |
| Instagram and social media packs | Coaches, small brands, social media managers | Both | Niche-specific packs on Etsy; larger, style-led kits on Creative Market, where they filled most of the page we read |
| Presentations, ebooks, workbooks, course kits | Course creators, consultants, agencies | Creative Market | Higher prices, commercial licences written for you, and buyers who need working files |
Our working map from how each marketplace describes its buyers, not sales data. The highlighted corner is the purchase Etsy shoppers arrive to make.
Here is what that map rests on. Creative Market describes its products as assets that help customers "complete their design projects, client work, and End Products for sale", and warns applicants that products which sell well on other marketplaces "may not be as successful at Creative Market, due to what our audience tends to like and buy". Its Canva Templates category listed 27,132 products on 11 October 2026, sorted into Print, Presentations, Social Media, Websites & Apps and Email.
We read the first 15 products on that page. They were social media kits, ebook and workbook templates and one course creator bundle, priced from $21 to $115, with 14 of the 15 between $21 and $49 and a median of $35. That is one page on one day in the site's default order, so read it as a description of the shelf, not a study. We did not sample Etsy the same way: Etsy's listing pages refuse automated readers, and we left that alone. To see Etsy's side, use the seller tool in step 2 below.
Three of these categories have their own guides here: resume templates, social media templates and wedding invitation templates.
How to sell Canva templates on Etsy: the seven steps
- 1Pick one buyer and one occasion
A baby shower host, a nail tech, a job-seeking nurse.
- 2Check the phrase in Marketplace Insights
Searches against listings, for the last 30 days.
- 3Build the template and its link
Original layout, Canva library fonts, a template link.
- 4Make the delivery PDF
Access, editing steps, terms. Two pages is plenty.
- 5Create the digital listing
Digital files as the item type; upload the PDF.
- 6Write it for search and for the buyer
Occasion and format in the title; requirements in the first lines.
- 7Publish, then walk the buyer's path
Open the PDF signed out of Canva, on a phone.
Steps 1 and 2: choose the buyer, then check the demand
Write the listing as a buyer would search for it: an occasion or a trade, the word template, and usually the word Canva or editable. Then open Shop Manager, Stats, Marketplace Insights and type it in. Etsy shows the number of searches and the number of listings for that phrase over the last 30 days, and gives sellers 15 keyword searches a week at no charge. Look for phrases where the trade or occasion narrows the field: "price list template" is everyone, "lash tech price list template" is someone.
Steps 3 and 4: the template, the link and the PDF
Build from a blank page, use fonts from Canva's library, and decide early whether to use Pro elements. Canva's help page says premium elements "will have watermarks (criss-cross patterns) on your design until they're purchased", which is what a buyer on a free account sees if you did not warn them. Then create the template link from the Share menu. Canva limits that feature to paid plans: Pro, Teams, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofits.
The delivery PDF needs a large button linked to the template, the same link written out in full, five or six editing steps, and your terms. One warning from Canva's template link page belongs on a sticky note above your desk: "If you delete a Template link it'll also make the URL inactive." Every PDF you have sold points at that URL.
Step 5: create the digital listing
Start a new listing and choose Digital files under "What type of item is it?". Upload the PDF. A listing takes up to five files of 20MB each, and file names are shown to buyers as uploaded, with a 70-character limit and no way to rename them later. Etsy does not allow variations on digital items, so a template in two sizes ships as one listing with both links in the PDF, not as a size menu.
If you plan to offer "we edit it for you", that is a separate listing type. Etsy calls it a made-to-order digital item: you upload nothing when you list it, and send the finished file through the order when the work is done. Price it as a service, because it is one.
Steps 6 and 7: write the listing, then test it
Put the occasion and the format at the front of the title and the software in the first line of the description: edited in Canva, free account or not, sizes included, nothing shipped. Our Etsy title formulas and the full Etsy SEO guide cover titles, tags and attributes. The first image should show the template filled in and in use; making mockups in Canva covers the method.
After publishing, open your own PDF on a phone, signed out of Canva, and tap the button. If you have to think at any point, so will the buyer.
Fee math on a $12 sale
A US shop keeps $10.41 of a $12 template sold through Etsy search. Three fees apply to every sale: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and payment processing, which Etsy lists at 3% plus $0.25 for the United States and at different rates for other countries.
| Route | What is taken from $12 | You keep | What else is true |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy, buyer found you in search | $0.20 listing + $0.78 transaction + $0.61 processing = $1.59 | $10.41 (86.8%) | US shop, before any sales tax Etsy adds for the buyer |
| Etsy, sale came through an Offsite Ad | $1.59 + $1.80 ad fee (15%) | $8.61 (71.7%) | Shops under $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days can opt out; above that the fee is 12% |
| Creative Market, default split | 50% of list price | $6.00 (50%) | Creative Market covers card processing; rates vary by shop and product; the buyer pays a platform fee on top |
Arithmetic on published rates for a US seller at an example price. It says nothing about how many sales each marketplace brings. Source: Etsy Fees & Payments Policy and payment processing table; Creative Market Help Center. Checked October 2026
Read the chart with two cautions. First, the Offsite Ads fee only applies when a buyer clicks an ad Etsy bought and orders within 30 days, and Etsy's policy lets shops with under $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days opt out. Second, Creative Market's half is not only a fee: its help page says it covers card processing and marketing, and that commission rates vary by shop and product. A lower percentage on a shelf where your buyer is looking can beat a higher one where they are not.
The same fees by category price
Etsy charges every digital category the same rates. What changes by category is the price, and the fixed 45 cents per sale weighs more the lower you go.
| Example price | Typical product | Etsy fees | You keep | Via an Offsite Ad (15%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $6 | A single invitation | $1.02 | $4.98 (83.0%) | $4.08 (68.0%) |
| $12 | A resume and cover letter set, or a media kit | $1.59 | $10.41 (86.8%) | $8.61 (71.7%) |
| $30 | A 60-post Instagram pack | $3.30 | $26.70 (89.0%) | $22.20 (74.0%) |
A single invitation at $6 loses 17% to fees and a $30 pack loses 11%. That is the arithmetic behind a familiar pattern: template shops move from single designs to suites, such as the invitation with its matching menu, sign and thank-you card. Run your own price through the free Etsy profit margin calculator, which also handles ads and the sales needed to reach a target; the walkthrough explains each input.
The mistakes that sink Canva template listings
- Saying nothing about Pro elements. The buyer opens the template, sees watermarks and assumes the product is broken. State what a free account can and cannot do, before the sale.
- Pricing a single design like a printable. At $3, Etsy's fees take a quarter of the sale. Bundle, or accept that the single is a sample for the suite.
- Making one listing per size. Digital items cannot have variations, and buyers do not want to guess. Put every size in one listing and say so in the first image.
- Editing the master. A change to the original design changes what every new buyer copies. Keep the master untouched and update on a duplicate.
- Titles written for designers. "Minimal modern template" describes your taste. "Graduation party invitation template, editable in Canva" describes their Saturday.
Running a Canva templates Etsy business: from one listing to a shop
One listing is a test of whether a buyer exists. A shop is ten to twenty listings for the same buyer, in one visual style, so that the person who bought the invitation finds the matching sign without leaving. Build outward from whatever sells first, and add a suite as soon as three pieces share a look.
Two channels are worth adding once the shop has a spine. Creative Market takes shop applications through a review by a person, asks for a portfolio with 10 to 20 examples, and supplies standard licences so you do not write your own. It is the natural second shelf for your business-facing kits. Canva runs its own Creators program too, which pays royalties instead of letting you set a price and takes each accepted template exclusively for three years; our comparison of the Canva Creator program and selling templates yourself covers the terms.
The part no marketplace does for you is deciding what to make next and what to charge. Our Digital Products program covers that ground: competitor analysis, a template creation lesson for Canva and Notion, pricing, and the upsell path from a single design to a bundle.
Open the Canva template shop: this week's checklist
- Name one buyer and three things they need for the same occasion or trade
- Run six phrases through Marketplace Insights and keep the two with the fewest listings per search
- Build the first template from a blank page, with Canva library fonts
- Create the template link and open it in a private window and a free Canva account
- Write the two-page delivery PDF: button, full link, editing steps, terms
- Open the Etsy shop; Etsy may charge a one-time set-up fee, shown during onboarding
- List it as Digital files, with the requirements in the first line and first image
- Decide on Offsite Ads: shops under $10,000 in yearly sales can opt out
- Price it with the fee calculator, then plan the two matching pieces
- Tap through your own PDF on a phone before telling anyone it is live
Selling Canva templates on Etsy: FAQ
Can I sell Canva templates on Etsy?
Yes, if you designed them. Canva's own help page uses a designer selling wedding invitation templates on Etsy as its example, and says templates with Pro content must be sold as Canva template links, while templates made from free content and your own photos can be sold as PDFs or as template links. Etsy requires digital items to be made or designed by the seller. Checked October 2026.
Can I use Canva's own templates to sell on Etsy?
No. Canva says you cannot sell its content on a standalone basis, and it counts changing colors, resizing or cropping as standalone use. A library template with your colors and fonts is still Canva's template. Etsy's rule points the same way: digital items must be made or designed by you. Start from a blank page and use Canva's elements as ingredients in your own layout.
How much does Etsy take from a $12 Canva template?
For a US shop, $1.59: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee of $0.78, and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25, which is $0.61. You keep $10.41, or 86.8%. If the buyer arrived through one of Etsy's Offsite Ads, a 15% ad fee of $1.80 is added and you keep $8.61. These are calculations from Etsy's published rates, checked October 2026.
What are the best Canva templates to sell on Etsy?
Etsy publishes no sales by template category, so nobody can rank them honestly. The categories that fit how people shop on Etsy are bought once, for a personal occasion or a small business need: invitations, resumes, planner pages, menus and price lists, and media kits. Test any phrase in Etsy's Marketplace Insights tool, which gives sellers 15 keyword searches a week at no charge.
Do I need Canva Pro to sell Canva templates on Etsy?
To deliver them properly, yes. Canva's template link feature is only available on paid plans: Pro, Teams, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofits. A template link opens a copy in the buyer's account and leaves your original untouched. Your buyers do not need a paid plan unless the template contains premium elements, which show a watermark until they are purchased. Checked October 2026.
How do buyers receive a Canva template on Etsy?
As a PDF. Etsy will not publish an instant-download listing without a file attached, so sellers upload a short PDF that contains the Canva template link and instructions. The buyer downloads the PDF after paying, clicks the link, and a copy of the template opens in their own Canva account. A listing can hold up to five files of 20MB each.
Should I sell Canva templates on Etsy or Creative Market?
Etsy suits templates a person buys once for themselves; Creative Market suits kits that designers and businesses buy as working assets. On Etsy anyone can open a shop and fees on a $12 sale come to about 13%, before ads. Creative Market reviews each shop application, asks for 10 to 20 portfolio examples, and pays 50% of list price by default. Checked October 2026.
One listing is a test. A shop is a system.
