Quick answer

Gumroad fees in 2026 are 10% plus $0.50 on direct sales, with card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 on top, and a flat 30% on sales to new customers through Discover. There is no monthly fee and Gumroad handles sales tax as merchant of record. On a $29 product you keep $24.46 from a direct card sale and $20.30 from a Discover sale.

Gumroad fees in 2026 are 10% plus $0.50 on every sale through your own profile or links, plus card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30, and a flat 30% on sales to new customers through the Discover marketplace. There is no monthly fee, and Gumroad collects and remits sales tax as merchant of record. Added up, a direct card sale costs 12.9% of the price plus $0.80, which is why a $5 product gives up 29% of its price and a $97 product gives up under 14%.

Checked on 11 October 2026 against Gumroad pricing and the Gumroad Help Center pages on fees, getting paid, Discover, sales tax, refunds and chargebacks. Rates change; confirm on those pages before you set a price.

This is a fee study in the plain sense. The data is Gumroad's published fee schedule, and every figure below is arithmetic on stated example prices, with the working shown so you can redo it at your own price. 1. A direct card sale costs 12.9% plus $0.80. The headline 10% plus $0.50 leaves out processing, which Gumroad's fees page lists separately.
  2. The fixed $0.80 punishes cheap products. Fees take 29.0% of a $5 sale, 15.7% of a $29 sale and 13.7% of a $97 sale.
  3. Discover costs more than direct on anything priced above $4.68. On a $29 product, a Discover sale leaves you $4.16 less than a direct one.
  4. The volume discount exists, but it is far away. The direct fee halves to 5% plus $0.50 only after $20,000 of paid sales in one calendar month.
  5. Two payout routes cost extra. PayPal payouts cost 2% and instant payouts cost 3%; no fee is listed for a standard bank payout.

How these numbers were worked out

The inputs are five example prices: $5, $9, $29, $49 and $97. They are illustrative, picked to span a single printable through to a small course. Each row assumes one product per order, a buyer paying by card, no affiliate, no refund and the price before tax.

  • Direct sale: fees = price × 12.9% + $0.80 (10% + $0.50 to Gumroad, 2.9% + $0.30 for card processing).
  • Discover sale: fees = price × 30%, nothing added.
  • High-volume direct sale: fees = price × 7.9% + $0.80.

Results are rounded to the cent. Payout fees, PayPal purchase fees and currency conversion are left out of the per-sale tables and covered in their own sections, because they depend on how you and your buyer choose to move money.

Gumroad transaction fee: what a direct sale costs

The Gumroad transaction fee on a direct sale is 10% of the price plus $0.50, and card processing adds 2.9% plus $0.30. The percentage part is the same at every price. The $0.80 of fixed fees is what changes the picture.

On the $5 product, the fixed $0.80 alone is 16 points of the 29. That is the whole case for bundling: three $5 printables sold separately pay the fixed fees three times, while one $15 bundle pays them once. The same logic applies to pay-what-you-want pricing, where a low minimum can leave almost nothing after fees.

The Gumroad Discover fee: 30%, and when you pay it

Gumroad charges a flat 30% when a new customer finds and buys from you through Discover, its marketplace. Processing is included, so there is nothing to add. Sales through your own profile, links, emails and embeds stay on the direct rate.

PriceDirect sale: you keepDiscover sale: you keepDifference
$5$3.55$3.50$0.05
$9$7.04$6.30$0.74
$29$24.46$20.30$4.16
$49$41.88$34.30$7.58
$97$83.69$67.90$15.79

Two things stand out. First, the gap grows with price: five cents at $5, $4.16 at $29, $15.79 at $97. Second, there is a crossover. Set 30% of the price equal to 12.9% of the price plus $0.80 and you get $0.80 ÷ 17.1% = $4.68. Below that price, a Discover sale is the cheaper of the two, because no fixed fee is charged.

Direct sale or Discover sale
Direct sale: 12.9% + $0.80
  • The buyer came from your profile, link, email or embed
  • Fee is 10% + $0.50, with card processing on top
  • Cheaper than Discover on anything priced above $4.68
  • Drops to 5% + $0.50 after $20,000 of paid sales in a month
Discover sale: 30% flat
  • A new customer found you through the marketplace
  • Processing is included in the 30%
  • Stays at 30% whatever your monthly volume
  • Needs a $100 balance and a risk review before you are listed

Discover is not open on day one. Gumroad's help page says an account needs completed payout settings, a balance of at least $100 from genuine sales and a pass through its risk review, which takes about three weeks on average. A product then needs one successful sale, a category and ratings enabled. Products listed on Discover are also opted into Gumroad's affiliate program unless you opt out.

The useful way to read the 30% is as a customer-acquisition cost. The question is not whether 30% is high. It is whether that buyer would ever have found you without the marketplace. Our look at the best-selling digital products on Gumroad shows which categories Discover actually surfaces.

Gumroad monthly fee: is there one?

No. Gumroad has no monthly fee, no paid plan and no setup charge. Its pricing page says fees are deducted from each sale, so a store with no sales costs nothing to keep open.

The only volume-based change is the high-volume discount. Once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales for the rest of that month are charged 5% plus $0.50. It applies automatically and resets on the 1st. Gumroad's fees page adds three conditions: a refund can drop you back under the threshold, Discover sales stay at 30%, and the $0.50 stays.

  • $29 product, standard rate: $4.54 in fees, you keep $24.46.
  • $29 product, high-volume rate: $3.09 in fees, you keep $25.91.
  • Sales needed to reach the threshold at $29: about 690 in one month ($20,000 ÷ $29).

Most stores never see that rate, so plan on 12.9% plus $0.80. A platform with a monthly plan and no transaction fee starts to win well before $20,000 a month; our Sellfy vs Gumroad comparison puts that break-even at roughly 106 sales a year on a $20 product, and our digital product platform fees comparison runs the same test across eight platforms.

What the fee buys: Gumroad as merchant of record

Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad has been the merchant of record on its sales. In practice it is the legal seller on the receipt, and it collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST in the regions where it has obligations. You do not manage tax settings; Gumroad disabled them in the dashboard when the change took effect.

Held at least 7 days on weekly, monthly and quarterly payouts

This matters when you compare fees. A storefront that charges 5% and plugs into your own payment account looks cheaper, but there you are the seller, and registering for and filing VAT on digital sales is your job. Our guide to VAT on digital products shows what that work involves, and Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy compares the two best-known merchants of record.

Two limits. Merchant of record covers tax on the sale, not income tax on your earnings. And if you already file sales tax returns, Gumroad provides a reseller certificate so you can report these sales as sales for resale.

Gumroad payouts: schedule, holds and the two payout fees

Gumroad pays out once your balance reaches $100, on a schedule you choose, and a standard bank payout has no listed fee. The two paid routes are PayPal payouts at 2% and instant payouts at 3%.

The payout fees stack on top of the sale fees. If Gumroad pays you by PayPal, the 2% comes off the balance: the $24.46 you kept from a $29 direct sale becomes $23.97, which lifts the total cost of that sale to 17.3% of the price. An instant payout of a $500 balance costs $15. Neither is charged on a standard bank payout, so if your country supports bank deposits, use them.

Gumroad does not pay out through Payoneer, Wise, cheque or wire. If your country has neither bank deposits nor a PayPal account type that can receive money, there is currently no way to be paid, so check the country table on the getting-paid page before you build a store.

Refunds, chargebacks and affiliates: who absorbs the fee

  • Refunds. The buyer gets the full amount back. Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded portion and keeps only the payment-processing part. On a refunded $29 card sale, that leaves you $1.14 out of pocket.
  • Chargebacks. You cover the refunded amount and the processing fees, and Gumroad returns its platform fee.
  • Affiliates. Fees are split in proportion to the commission. With a 30% affiliate on a $29 sale, the affiliate carries 30% of the $4.54 in fees and receives $7.34; you receive $17.12.
  • Connected accounts. If buyers pay through your own connected Stripe or PayPal account, the processor keeps its fees on a refund and you are responsible for both Gumroad's and the processor's fees.

Gumroad fee calculator: run your own price

You can work out any Gumroad sale with one line: you keep = price × 0.871 − $0.80 on a direct card sale, and price × 0.70 on a Discover sale. To price backwards from the amount you want to keep, use price = (target + $0.80) ÷ 0.871.

For anything beyond one platform, use our free platform break-even calculator. It has Gumroad direct and Gumroad Discover as separate presets next to Etsy, Payhip, Whop and Stripe, shows net per sale and per month, and finds the sales volume where one platform overtakes another. If you are still choosing the price itself, the digital product pricing calculator works from competitor prices and your sales goal.

Fees are the easy part to calculate. Choosing a product people want and sending your own traffic to it, so sales land at the direct rate, is the harder part, and it is what our Digital Products program is built around.

Limits of this fee study

One more caution on comparisons. A lower fee somewhere else is only cheaper if the sale still happens there and you have priced in your own tax admin. For the head-to-head with the biggest marketplace, see Etsy fees vs Gumroad fees; for the wider field, see where to sell digital products in 2026.

Gumroad fees: FAQ

What are Gumroad's fees in 2026?

Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 on each sale through your profile or direct links, and card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 is charged on top, so a direct card sale costs 12.9% of the price plus $0.80. Sales to new customers through the Discover marketplace cost a flat 30% with processing included. There is no monthly fee. Checked October 2026 on Gumroad's pricing and fees pages.

Does Gumroad charge a monthly fee?

No. Gumroad's pricing page says it does not charge a monthly fee and that its fees are deducted from each sale. There are no paid plans to upgrade to. The only volume-based change is automatic: once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month are charged 5% plus $0.50 instead of 10% plus $0.50, and the rate resets on the 1st.

How much does Gumroad take from a $10 sale?

On a direct card sale, Gumroad's fee is $1.50 (10% plus $0.50) and card processing is $0.59 (2.9% plus $0.30), so $2.09 comes off and you keep $7.91 before any payout fee. If the same $10 sale comes from a new customer through Discover, the flat 30% takes $3.00 and you keep $7.00. That is arithmetic on Gumroad's published rates, checked October 2026.

Is the Gumroad Discover fee charged on every sale?

No. Gumroad's pricing page applies the 30% when new customers find and buy from you through the Discover marketplace. Sales through your own profile or direct links pay the direct rate. The 30% includes processing, so nothing is added on top. Discover also has entry conditions: completed payout settings, a $100 balance from genuine sales and a risk review that Gumroad says takes about three weeks on average.

Does Gumroad handle sales tax and VAT?

Yes. Gumroad's pricing page says it has been a merchant of record since January 1, 2025 and manages sales tax collection and remittance worldwide, and its help center says it collects and remits VAT on digital sales to EU and UK buyers. That covers tax on the sale itself. Income tax on what you earn is still yours to report, so keep the payout CSV files.

When does Gumroad pay out, and are there payout fees?

You need a balance of at least $100, higher in some countries, and you can choose daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly payouts. On weekly, monthly and quarterly schedules a sale is held for at least 7 days. Gumroad's help page lists a 2% fee on PayPal payouts and a 3% fee on instant payouts for US creators, up to $10,000. It lists no fee for a standard bank payout.

Do I get Gumroad's fee back when I refund a sale?

Mostly. Gumroad's help center says that when a sale is refunded, its own fee on the refunded portion is returned to you and only the payment-processing portion is kept, because processors do not return it. On a chargeback you cover the refunded amount and the processing fees, and Gumroad returns its platform fee. Sales through your own connected Stripe or PayPal account follow different rules.
