Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy comes down to audience versus software. Both act as merchant of record and handle sales tax. Lemon Squeezy charges less per direct sale, while Gumroad offers a marketplace, flexible payouts and creator features. Lemon Squeezy is now owned by Stripe, which is steering new merchant of record sellers to Stripe Managed Payments.
Gumroad vs Lemon Squeezy is a choice between two merchants of record: Gumroad suits creators selling files, courses and memberships to an audience, while Lemon Squeezy suits software and SaaS sellers who want lower per-sale fees and a license API. Both handle sales tax and VAT as the seller of record. The bigger 2026 question is Lemon Squeezy's future, now that Stripe, its owner, is building Stripe Managed Payments as its main merchant of record product.

The table hides one important nuance: fees are not the only cost. A platform with a marketplace can bring buyers you would not otherwise reach, and a platform with faster payouts can matter more than a percentage point if cash flow is tight. Read the rest before deciding on fees alone.
What merchant of record means for you
A merchant of record is the business that legally sells to your customer. It collects payment, charges the right sales tax or VAT, remits it, handles refunds and chargebacks, and then pays you. Selling through one means you do not have to register for VAT in every country where a buyer lives.

On the payout schedule
Lemon Squeezy has always worked this way. Gumroad announced that it was becoming a merchant of record and now collects tax in regions where it has obligations. In both cases, you still owe income tax on what you earn; the merchant of record handles the sales tax on what your customer pays. Lemon Squeezy also lists add-on fees: 1.5% for international transactions, 1.5% for PayPal, 0.5% for subscription payments, 5% on payments recovered through abandoned cart emails, and 3% on affiliate referrals. Payouts to banks outside the US carry 1% per payout, and PayPal payouts have their own fees. Gumroad drops its direct fee to 5% plus 50 cents on new direct sales once your paid sales pass $20,000 in a calendar month, resetting on the 1st.

Payouts and cash flow
- Daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly
- 7-day hold on weekly, monthly, quarterly
- Daily needs US bank and payout history
- $100 minimum, higher in some countries
- Instant payouts available
- Created on the 1st and 15th
- 13-day hold on net sales
- Paid on the 14th and 28th

In practice, Gumroad gives you more control over timing, and Lemon Squeezy gives you a predictable twice-monthly rhythm with a longer hold. If you rely on product income to cover monthly bills, the difference between a weekly payout and a payout up to four weeks after a sale is worth planning for.
Lemon Squeezy review: the Stripe question
Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024. In its January 2026 update, Lemon Squeezy said Stripe is building its merchant of record future as Stripe Managed Payments, that Managed Payments supports merchants in more than 35 countries, that public sign-up without an invite was coming, and that the team's goal is to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate.
Lemon Squeezy has not announced a shutdown, and its pricing and docs remain live. But the direction is clear: new investment is going into Managed Payments. Stripe's page says Managed Payments adds 3.5% per successful transaction on top of standard Stripe processing fees, covering global indirect tax, fraud prevention, disputes and customer support.
Lemon Squeezy vs Gumroad in 2026: which should you pick?
- Pick Gumroad if you sell templates, ebooks, courses or memberships to an audience you already have, want flexible payouts, or want the option of Discover marketplace sales.
- Pick Lemon Squeezy if you sell software with license keys or subscriptions, already run on it, and want the lowest published direct fee today.
- Look at Stripe Managed Payments if you are starting a new SaaS or software product and want the merchant of record option Stripe is investing in.
Whichever you choose, keep your product files, customer list and email platform portable. Features beyond fees
Fees and payouts get the attention, but the day-to-day experience depends on the features around checkout. Both platforms cover the basics: hosted product pages, a checkout that handles tax, discount codes, refunds, and customer emails. The differences show up at the edges.
- Subscriptions: Lemon Squeezy supports weekly, monthly and yearly billing with upgrades, downgrades, cancellations, free trials and discounts, according to its pricing page; note its extra 0.5% on subscription payments. Gumroad supports memberships for recurring access to content.
- Software licensing: Lemon Squeezy documents a License API for validating and activating license keys, which matters if you sell desktop apps, plugins or templates with activation.
- Marketing: Lemon Squeezy lists email marketing as free up to 500 subscribers, with paid tiers beyond that, plus affiliate tools with their own fees. Gumroad has built-in emails to customers and followers and an affiliate system where fees are shared in proportion to the commission.
- Discovery: Gumroad Discover can surface your product to buyers browsing Gumroad, at a flat 30%. Lemon Squeezy has no marketplace, so every sale comes from traffic you send.
If your product is a one-off file sold to followers, these differences rarely matter. If it is software with activations or a subscription with trials, they decide which platform fits.
Common mistakes when choosing
- Compared fees at your real price, not a round example
- Counted how many buyers are outside your country
- Checked payout timing against your monthly bills
- Read the add-on fees for PayPal, subscriptions and affiliates
- Confirmed your payout country is supported
- Read the platform roadmap or latest company update
- Kept product files and customer data exportable
The most common mistake is picking on the headline percentage alone. A creator selling mostly to buyers outside the US through PayPal pays Lemon Squeezy's base fee plus two add-ons, which narrows the gap with other platforms. A creator relying on Gumroad Discover pays 30% on those sales, which is a marketing cost as much as a fee. Run your own numbers with a realistic mix of buyers.
Switching between platforms
- 1Export customers and products
Download customer lists, product files and descriptions.
- 2Rebuild products on the new platform
Same names and prices so links in old content still make sense.
- 3Update every link
Bio links, emails, pinned posts, YouTube descriptions and website buttons.
- 4Plan existing subscriptions
Subscribers usually need to re-subscribe; tell them early.
- 5Keep the old store live briefly
Until the final payout clears and refund windows pass.
