Etsy vs Gumroad in 2026: Fees, Traffic and Who Should Use Which

Etsy vs Gumroad in 2026: the full fee stack on the same $19 product, what Offsite Ads and Discover take, who brings the traffic, and which one to start on.

Quick answer

Etsy vs Gumroad is a question of who finds the buyer. Etsy brings marketplace shoppers and is cheaper per organic sale: on a $19 download a US seller keeps about $16.75 on Etsy and $15.75 on a direct Gumroad sale. Gumroad costs more per sale but gives you the customer list, email tools and worldwide tax handling, so it suits sellers who bring their own audience.

Etsy vs Gumroad comes down to who finds the buyer: choose Etsy if you need marketplace search to bring shoppers to a product people already look for, and choose Gumroad if you bring your own audience and want to keep the customer. On fees alone Etsy is cheaper per sale. On the same $19 download, a US seller keeps about $16.75 from an organic Etsy order and $15.75 from a direct Gumroad order, and that $1 gap is the most you should spend on ads before the answer flips.

Checked October 2026 against Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy, its payment processing fee table and Off-Platform Transactions Policy (last updated October 5, 2026), and Gumroad's pricing page, fees article, Discover article and payout guide. Every dollar figure below is calculated from those published rates for a US seller and a card payment, before sales tax.

These are two of about a dozen realistic options. If you have not ruled out Payhip, Lemon Squeezy, Stan or your own site, read where to sell digital products in 2026 first; it compares every platform by fees, traffic and fit.

The verdict: who should use which

Pick by where your buyers come from
Pick Etsy if
  • You have no audience yet
  • Shoppers already search for what you make
  • Your prices are low, where fixed fees bite
  • You are fine with marketplace rules on links and contact
  • You can live without an email list from these buyers
Pick Gumroad if
  • You already have followers, a list or a blog
  • Your product needs explaining before it sells
  • You want customers you can email and export
  • You want sales tax and VAT handled worldwide
  • You sell memberships or pay-what-you-want

Neither column is a ranking. Etsy sells you demand that already exists; Gumroad sells you a checkout for demand you create. A seller with a good product and no traffic will sit unseen on Gumroad, and a creator with ten thousand engaged followers pays Etsy for shoppers they did not need.

Etsy vs Gumroad fees: the same $19 product on both

Take one product, a $19 template pack, and sell it once through each route. Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and, for a US bank account, 3% plus $0.25 in payment processing. Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 on a direct sale, and card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 comes on top. Its Discover marketplace charges a flat 30% that includes processing.

Etsy wins both pairings at $19: organic beats direct by about $1.00, and an Offsite Ads order beats a Discover order by $0.60 to $1.16. The reason is structural. Etsy's per-sale stack is 9.5% plus $0.45; Gumroad's is 12.9% plus $0.80. Both parts are larger on Gumroad, so no price exists at which a direct Gumroad sale is cheaper than an organic Etsy one.

The table shows what you keep at five prices. To run your own price and monthly volume, use our free platform break-even calculator; it carries the same October 2026 rates for Etsy, Gumroad direct and Discover, with Payhip, Whop and Stripe alongside. Two details it cannot know: Etsy applies its processing fee to the order total including any sales tax, and Gumroad drops its direct fee to 5% plus $0.50 for the rest of any calendar month in which your paid sales pass $20,000.

The ad-spend reality: when Etsy stops being cheaper

Etsy's fee advantage is real but thin, and advertising is what erases it. There are two kinds, and they behave differently.

  • Offsite Ads. Etsy advertises your listings on search engines and social networks. If a buyer clicks one and orders from your shop within 30 days, you pay 15% of the order, or 12% once your shop has made $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days, capped at $100 per order. Under the threshold you can opt out. Over it, participation is required for the lifetime of the shop.
  • Etsy Ads. Optional promoted placement inside Etsy, bought through bids and capped by a daily budget you set. The spend is not tied to an order, so your cost per sale depends on how well the listing converts.

Here is the number to hold on to. The gap between an organic Etsy sale and a direct Gumroad sale is 3.4% of the price plus $0.35, which is $1.00 at $19. If your Etsy Ads spend works out to more than that per sale, a buyer you brought to Gumroad yourself would have left you more. A 15% Offsite Ads fee is $2.85 on the same order, nearly three times the gap.

So the fee question has a boring answer: the two are within a few percent of each other in most realistic mixes. What differs by an order of magnitude is how many sales each platform produces for you, and what you own afterwards. Etsy: what you get and what it costs

What you get: a marketplace where shoppers search for products by name, occasion and style, and a listing that Etsy says can take up to 48 hours to appear in search after publishing. Digital listings deliver automatically, with up to five files of 20MB each.

What it costs (checked October 2026): $0.20 per listing, renewed every four months and again each time a multi-quantity listing sells; 6.5% of the price; payment processing that varies by the country of your bank account, 3% plus $0.25 in the US. Etsy may also charge a one-time shop set-up fee that varies by location. Etsy Plus, at $10 a month, is optional.

Limits: you compete on a results page next to similar products, the listing layout is Etsy's, and the Off-Platform Transactions Policy restricts sending shoppers anywhere else. Items must be your own design, and AI use must be disclosed in the description. Our guide to selling digital products on Etsy covers setup, listings and the delivery checklist.

Gumroad: what you get and what it costs

What you get: a product page and checkout with no monthly fee, pay-what-you-want pricing, memberships, embeds for your own site and a custom domain. Gumroad's features page says you can send email broadcasts and automated workflows, import an existing list, and export your followers and customers at any time. Since January 1, 2025 it has acted as merchant of record and handles sales tax collection and remittance worldwide.

What it costs (checked October 2026): 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale, plus 2.9% plus $0.30 card processing or PayPal's fees; a flat 30% on Discover sales. Payouts need a $100 balance, run weekly, monthly or quarterly, and carry a 2% fee if you are paid through PayPal rather than a bank account.

Limits: no buyers arrive by default, and the fixed $0.80 per direct sale is heavy on anything under $5. The Gumroad selling guide walks through setup, Discover and payouts.

Gumroad vs Etsy for digital products: where the traffic comes from

Gumroad has a marketplace too, but it is not open on day one. Discover lists a product only after the account and the product clear a set of gates, and the first of them requires sales you made without it.

That makes Discover a second-stage channel: you earn your way in with your own traffic, then pay 30% on the new customers it finds. Etsy inverts the order. Search exposure is available to a new listing, and the work is in titles, images and reviews. Which sequence suits you depends on what you have today.

Etsy or Gumroad for printables?

Etsy, unless you already have an audience. Printables are bought the way people use Etsy: someone types a specific need, such as a budget tracker or a wedding seating chart, and picks from the results. They are also cheap, which is where Gumroad's fixed fee hurts. On a $5 printable you keep $4.08 on an organic Etsy sale and $3.56 on a direct Gumroad sale, a 13% difference rather than the 6% at $19.

The case for Gumroad is the second purchase. A printable buyer on Etsy is hard to reach again; a buyer on Gumroad is a contact you can email when the next pack is ready. Sellers who publish in a series, such as monthly planner inserts or seasonal bundles, feel that difference most. For the Etsy mechanics, from file setup to a first sale, see how to sell printables on Etsy.

Selling on both without breaking Etsy's rules

Running both is the common end state, and nothing in the policies checked here forbids it. What its Off-Platform Transactions Policy forbids is using Etsy to move a member elsewhere: instructing them to purchase through a personal website, social shop or another marketplace, sharing contact details to complete a sale off Etsy, offering off-platform discounts or other incentives, and using a QR code to direct members off Etsy.

Run Etsy and Gumroad as separate channels
  1. 1
Give each channel its own traffic

Etsy gets marketplace search. Gumroad gets your bio link, emails, pins and videos.

  2. 2
    Keep Etsy clean

No Gumroad links, codes or QR codes in listings, files, messages or packaging inserts.

  3. 3
Build the list on your side

A free or pay-what-you-want product on Gumroad collects contacts from your own audience.

  4. 4
Match the product, not the pitch

Same files on both. Etsy listings are written for search; the Gumroad page is written for people who know you.

  5. 5
    Review the mix each quarter

Check the share of Etsy orders coming through Offsite Ads and what Etsy Ads cost per sale.

This is also where a platform decision turns into a business. Choosing the channel is one afternoon; building the product, the funnel and the launch that make either channel work is the larger job, and it is what our Digital Products program is built around.

Etsy vs Gumroad: FAQ

Is Etsy or Gumroad better for digital products?

Etsy is better when you have no audience and sell something shoppers already search for, because the marketplace brings the buyers. Gumroad is better when you bring your own traffic and want the customer list, email tools and worldwide tax handling in one place. Many sellers start on Etsy for discovery and add Gumroad for the audience they build.

Which has lower fees, Etsy or Gumroad?

Per sale, Etsy. On a $19 download a US seller keeps about $16.75 on an organic Etsy sale and $15.75 on a direct Gumroad sale. Advertising changes it: an Etsy Offsite Ads sale at 15% keeps about $13.90, and a Gumroad Discover sale keeps $13.30. Calculated from the published rates of both platforms, before sales tax. Checked October 2026.

Is Etsy or Gumroad better for printables?

For a seller with no following, Etsy, because printable buyers search there by name and occasion. Low prices suit Etsy better too: its fixed fees are $0.45 per sale against $0.80 on a direct Gumroad sale. Gumroad makes sense for printables once you have an email list or social audience to send, and want to keep those buyers as subscribers.

Can I sell the same product on Etsy and Gumroad?

Yes. We found no exclusivity requirement in the Etsy or Gumroad pages checked for this guide. What Etsy prohibits is steering its members off the platform: instructing them to buy through a personal website or another marketplace, sharing contact details to complete a sale elsewhere, offering off-platform discounts and using QR codes that lead off Etsy. Run the two as separate channels with separate traffic.

Does Gumroad bring buyers the way Etsy does?

Not at the start. Gumroad Discover lists a product only after your account has a $100 balance from genuine sales and passes a risk review that Gumroad says takes about three weeks on average, and the product needs one successful sale, a category and ratings enabled. Discover sales then cost a flat 30%. Etsy says a new listing can take up to 48 hours to appear in search.

Who handles sales tax and VAT on Etsy and Gumroad?

Gumroad has been the merchant of record since January 1, 2025, and says it handles sales tax collection and remittance worldwide. On Etsy, taxes paid by the buyer are collected at checkout and passed through your payment account rather than taken from your listing price. On both, income tax on what you earn remains your own responsibility.

Do I have to pay for ads on Etsy?

Etsy Ads are optional and run on a daily budget you set. Offsite Ads are different: you are charged only when an ad leads to an order within 30 days, at 15% of the order, or 12% once your shop has made $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days, capped at $100 per order. Shops under that threshold can opt out; shops over it cannot.
