Lemon Squeezy tutorial: setup to first sale
- 01Sign up
Store starts in test mode
- 02Activate
Questionnaire and ID check
- 03Add product
Files, price, variants
- 04Test checkout
In test mode
- 05Go live and share
Link, button or overlay
The whole process is short, but activation is the step people underestimate. Start it on day one, and build your products while you wait for approval.
Step 1: Activate your store
Every new Lemon Squeezy store starts in test mode. To sell, click Activate your store in the sidebar. Its docs describe two steps: a short questionnaire about your business and customers, and an identity check where you upload a photo of a government-issued ID. Approvals typically happen in 2 to 3 business days.
Lemon Squeezy reviews every store because, as merchant of record, it is the seller on every receipt. It runs know-your-customer and know-your-business checks and confirms your products fit its terms. Its docs recommend answering honestly and in detail.
Lemonsqueezy digital products setup: adding a product
In the Products section, create a new product. The required basics are a name, a price and, for a downloadable product, a file. From there you can add:
- Variants: different versions of one product, such as software with 5, 10 or 20 seats, or an ebook as PDF only versus PDF plus extras. Each variant can have its own price, files and license key settings.
- Pricing types: one-time, pay what you want, or subscription pricing.
- License keys: enable Generate license keys and every buyer gets a unique key.
- Storefront display: choose whether the product appears in your hosted store at your-store-name.lemonsqueezy.com.
- 1Name and describe it
Use the words buyers search for, and say exactly what is included.
- 2Set the price type
One-time, pay what you want, or subscription.
- 3Upload the files
Or connect license keys for software.
- 4Add variants if needed
For tiers, seats or bundles.
- 5Decide on storefront display
Show it in your hosted store or sell only by direct link.
License keys and software delivery
Software is where Lemon Squeezy stands apart from many creator storefronts. With license keys enabled, it creates a unique key for each customer, and its License API lets your app validate and activate keys. That lets you limit activations and sell seat-based tiers as variants. If you sell templates or plugins without activation, you can skip keys and deliver files directly.
Discount codes
Lemon Squeezy's discount settings let you create percentage or fixed-amount codes, set start and expiry dates, limit the number of redemptions, and, for subscriptions, choose whether a discount applies to the first payment only, to a set number of months, or forever. Limit codes to specific products when you run a launch discount, so an old code does not quietly apply to your newest product.
How to sell on Lemon Squeezy: sharing your checkout
You have three ways to send buyers to checkout. The simplest is the product's share link, which you can put in a link-in-bio, email or post. On your own website, Lemon.js adds buy buttons and a checkout overlay so buyers pay without leaving your page. And the hosted storefront lists every product you choose to display.
- No code needed
- Works in bios, emails and posts
- Opens a hosted checkout page
- Best for social sellers
- Uses Lemon.js on your site
- Buyer stays on your page
- Works with JS frameworks
- Best for software and SaaS sites
Test the full flow in test mode before you go live: buy your own product, check the receipt email, download the file or check the license key, and try a discount code.
Common setup mistakes
- Waiting to activate: building every product before applying adds days of delay. Apply first, build in test mode while you wait.
- Vague activation answers: the review exists to confirm what you sell and to whom. Short or unclear answers slow approval.
- Skipping the test purchase: a broken download link or missing license key on launch day costs sales and trust.
- Unlimited launch codes: set an expiry date and a redemption limit, and restrict codes to the products they were meant for.
- Ignoring add-on fees: international buyers, PayPal and subscriptions each add to the base fee. Price with your real buyer mix in mind.
Most of these take minutes to avoid, and they are the difference between a smooth launch and an afternoon of refunds and support emails.
Lemon Squeezy for beginners: fees on low-priced products
The fixed 50 cents matters most on cheap products. Here is what Lemon Squeezy and Gumroad direct sales take at three prices for a US card buyer, using published rates. Gumroad's figure includes its 10% plus 50 cents and card processing of 2.9% plus 30 cents; Lemon Squeezy's 5% plus 50 cents covers processing for a domestic card.
| Price | Lemon Squeezy | Gumroad direct |
|---|---|---|
| $5 | About $0.75 (15%) | About $1.45 (29%) |
| $9 | About $0.95 (11%) | About $1.96 (22%) |
| $29 | About $1.95 (7%) | About $4.54 (16%) |
International buyers add 1.5% on Lemon Squeezy, PayPal adds another 1.5%, and subscriptions add 0.5%. Even so, for sub-$10 products sold directly, its published rates take a smaller share than Gumroad's. For your own numbers, use our digital product fee calculator.
Getting paid
Payouts are created on the 1st and 15th of each month. Net sales are held for 13 days, become available on the 14th and 28th, and take 1 to 5 days to reach your bank. The minimum payout is $50; smaller balances roll over. Bank payouts outside the US carry a 1% fee, and PayPal payouts have their own fees.
The Stripe Managed Payments question
Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024. Lemon Squeezy's January 2026 update says Stripe is building its merchant of record future as Stripe Managed Payments, that Managed Payments supports merchants in more than 35 countries, and that the team's goal is an easy migration path for Lemon Squeezy users. Stripe's page lists Managed Payments at 3.5% per successful transaction on top of standard Stripe processing.
- Read the latest Lemon Squeezy company update
- Compare Stripe Managed Payments pricing and countries
- Keep product files and descriptions backed up
- Export customer lists regularly
- Use your own domain for product pages where possible
- Note every place you embed checkout links
