Etsy Fees vs eBay Fees for Digital Sellers

Etsy fees vs eBay for digital products: the full fee stack on each, what eBay's digital goods policy really allows, and why Etsy usually wins for printables.

Quick answer

Comparing Etsy fees vs eBay for digital products, the percentages are close on paper, but eBay mostly loses: its policy pushes digital goods into a USD 9.95 Classified Ad unless you are an approved seller, it has no instant download, and its buyers expect physical items. Use Etsy for printables and downloads; use eBay for physical versions of your designs.

On Etsy fees vs eBay for digital products, Etsy usually wins: it charges a USD 0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and US payment processing of 3% plus USD 0.25, and it delivers downloads for you. eBay's standard final value fee of 13.6% looks comparable, but most digital sellers cannot use standard listings at all and must pay USD 9.95 for a 30-day Classified Ad instead.

Fees checked October 2026 against Etsy's fees and payments policy, its help page on payment processing fees, eBay's selling fees page, its electronically delivered items policy and its guide to listing and delivering digital items. US rates; other countries differ.

Most Etsy-versus-eBay comparisons are written for people selling vintage clothes or handmade mugs. This one is for digital sellers: printables, templates, planners, patterns and ebooks. The short version is that the fee tables are the smaller part of the decision; eBay's rules and its buyers matter more. For every other platform option, see our hub on where to sell digital products.

Etsy fees vs eBay: the verdict first

Pick Etsy if
  • You sell instant downloads: printables, templates, planners
  • You want the platform to deliver the files
  • Your buyers search by style and occasion
  • You list many low-priced items
Pick eBay if
  • You sell physical prints or products of your designs
  • You are an eBay-approved digital seller already
  • You sell a high-priced information product suited to a Classified Ad
  • You already have an eBay audience for physical goods

For nearly every digital seller, Etsy is the default and eBay is an add-on for physical versions. The rest of this page shows why, fee by fee and rule by rule.

Two things stand out. First, eBay's final value fee already includes payment processing, so the honest comparison is eBay's 13.6% plus its per-order fee against Etsy's 6.5% plus 3% plus USD 0.25 plus the listing fee. Second, the eBay figures only apply to standard listings, which most digital sellers are not allowed to use; that is the next section.

What are eBay's fees for digital downloads?

eBay's electronically delivered items policy splits digital sellers into two groups (checked October 2026):

  • Sellers not approved for digital goods must list in Everything Else > Information Products using the Classified Ad format. eBay's guide gives the Classified Ad insertion fee as USD 9.95 for a 30-day listing, with no final value fee. eBay acts as a lead generator: the sale and the delivery happen between you and the buyer, and eBay's buyer protection program does not cover these listings.
  • Approved sellers can list in other categories with standard fees, but must meet extra conditions. The policy lists them, including a clear notice that the buyer receives a revocable license, responsibility for customer support on items not received or not as described, and proof that you own or are authorized to sell the goods.

eBay's separate compilations of information policy also covers collections of ebooks, templates and images, which describes many printable bundles. Read both pages for your exact product before listing.

A worked example on a low-priced printable

Fee percentages hide the real effect of flat fees on cheap items. Take an illustrative USD 10 printable sold once in the US (an example input, not a typical price claim), using the published rates above and ignoring ads and taxes:

Fees on one illustrative USD 10 sale
Etsy: listing + 6.5% + 3% + 0.25
USD 1.40
eBay standard: 13.6% + 0.30 order fee
USD 1.66
eBay Classified Ad: flat 30-day fee
USD 9.95

On Etsy the listing fee recurs only on renewal or when a multi-quantity item sells, so the per-sale cost falls as one listing sells many times. On eBay's standard listings the cost is close to Etsy's, which is why the fee tables look like a draw. But the Classified Ad route, the one most digital sellers must use, only works when a 30-day ad brings in enough sales to cover a flat fee, which few low-priced printables do. Etsy's fees for digital sellers, in detail

Etsy's stack has four parts for a typical US seller, per its fees and payments policy and help pages (checked October 2026):

  • Listing fee: USD 0.20 per item. Listings expire after four months; auto-renewal charges the fee again.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the price you display, plus shipping and gift wrap if charged (rarely relevant for downloads).
  • Payment processing: 3% plus USD 0.25 per order in the US, per Etsy's payment processing page. Rates differ by country.
  • Offsite Ads: on orders Etsy attributes to its ads, 15% if your shop made under USD 10,000 in the past 365 days and 12% above that, capped at USD 100 per order, per Etsy's page on how Offsite Ads work. Shops under the threshold can opt out.

In exchange, Etsy handles the download. You attach up to five files of up to 20MB each to an instant-download listing, according to its page on managing digital listings, and buyers get them immediately after payment. That alone removes most of the support work eBay sellers take on.

eBay vs Etsy for digital products: beyond the fees

Fees are the easy part to compare. Three other differences decide the outcome for digital sellers.

Where each platform fits
Higher price
Etsy instant download
Etsy or eBay physical print
Low price
Etsy, or an eBay Classified Ad only if volume covers the flat fee
eBay or Etsy, depending on your existing audience
Digital file
Physical item
  • Buyer expectations. Etsy shoppers search for "printable", "template" and "instant download". eBay shoppers mostly expect a physical item and eBay's checkout and protection, which a Classified Ad does not offer.
  • Download experience. Etsy delivers files automatically. On eBay you deliver by email or link yourself, and you handle every "where is my file" message.
  • Policy risk. Etsy is built for digital listings. eBay's digital policies are restrictive, and a listing in the wrong format or category risks removal.

Can you sell printables on eBay?

You can list printable designs, but in most cases not as instant downloads through standard eBay listings. The practical options are:

Three ways to use eBay with printable designs
  1. 1
    Sell the physical print

Print the planner, wall art or pattern and ship it. Standard eBay fees apply and buyers get what they expect.

  2. 2
    Use a Classified Ad

List in Everything Else > Information Products for USD 9.95 per 30 days and deliver the file yourself. Only worth it for higher-priced products.

  3. 3
Apply to be an approved seller

If you meet eBay's conditions, list in other categories with a revocable-license notice and handle support yourself.

For most sellers, the first option is the useful one: eBay as a channel for physical versions of designs you already sell digitally on Etsy or your own store. If you want neither marketplace, our guide to selling digital products on Gumroad covers a platform built for downloads.

Alternatives to both

If marketplace fees are the problem, a creator storefront such as Gumroad, Payhip or Shopify with a download app trades marketplace traffic for lower or different fees and your own customer list. The trade-off is that you bring the traffic. Many sellers run Etsy for discovery and a storefront for repeat buyers. Our platforms hub compares every option, and our guide to selling digital products on Etsy covers getting the most from the marketplace you pick.

A quick decision checklist

If you are still unsure, run your product through these questions. Most digital sellers answer the first three with a yes, which points to Etsy for the download and eBay, if at all, for a printed version.

Before you list on either platform
  • Is the product a file the buyer downloads, rather than something you ship?
  • Is the price low enough that a flat USD 9.95 ad would eat most of a month of sales?
  • Do you want the platform to deliver files and handle access automatically?
  • Have you read eBay's electronically delivered items and compilations policies for this exact product?
  • Have you checked the current fees on both official pages, since they change?
  • Have you run your expected price and monthly volume through a break-even calculator?

Two habits help whichever platform you choose. First, re-check fees at least once a year: both marketplaces adjust them, and a fee change can turn a thin margin negative on low-priced items. Second, keep your files, mockups and listing copy in one organized folder, so moving or duplicating a product to another platform takes minutes, not days. Sellers who can move quickly are the ones who benefit when a platform changes its rules.

If you are building a catalog rather than testing one listing, our Digital Products program covers choosing a platform, setting up listings and delivery, and growing sales from the first product to a full line.

Etsy fees vs eBay: FAQ

Are Etsy fees higher than eBay fees?

For a typical low-priced digital download, the percentage fees are close, but eBay is harder to use for digital goods at all. Etsy charges USD 0.20 per listing, 6.5% per sale and US payment processing of 3% plus USD 0.25. eBay's standard rate in most categories is 13.6% plus a per-order fee, but most digital sellers must use eBay's Classified Ad format instead. Checked October 2026.

Can you sell digital downloads on eBay?

Only within limits. eBay's electronically delivered items policy says sellers who are not approved for digital goods must list them in Everything Else > Information Products using the Classified Ad format. Approved sellers can use other categories but must meet extra conditions, such as granting buyers a revocable license notice and handling support. eBay does not deliver the file for you.

How much does an eBay Classified Ad cost for digital items?

eBay's guide to listing digital items gives the Classified Ad insertion fee as USD 9.95 for a 30-day listing, with no final value fee. The sale and delivery happen between you and the buyer, and eBay's buyer protection program does not cover Classified Ad listings. For a low-priced printable, that flat fee can exceed the price of a single sale. Checked October 2026.

Can I sell printables on eBay?

You can list printables, but eBay's policy on compilations of information and its electronically delivered items policy push most of them into the Classified Ad format, where eBay is only a lead generator. Buyers on eBay mostly expect physical items and eBay checkout. Printing the design and selling a physical product is the way most sellers use eBay for this kind of work.

Is Etsy or eBay better for digital products?

Etsy is better for most digital products. It supports instant downloads natively, attaches up to five files per listing, and its buyers search for printables and templates. eBay requires approval or a Classified Ad for most digital goods, has no built-in instant download, and its buyers expect physical items. eBay makes sense mainly for physical versions of your designs.

What other fees does Etsy charge digital sellers?

Beyond listing, transaction and payment processing fees, Etsy charges an Offsite Ads fee on orders it attributes to its ads: 15% if your shop made under USD 10,000 in the past 365 days, 12% above that, capped at USD 100 per order. Shops under the threshold can opt out. Etsy Ads, if you run them, are a separate cost you set. Checked October 2026.
