Canva Creator Program Earnings vs Selling Templates Yourself

Canva Creator program earnings come from a royalty pool Canva does not publish. How that compares with selling templates on Etsy or Gumroad at known fees.

Quick answer

Canva Creator program earnings are royalties from a monthly pool that Canva sizes from its subscription revenue and shares by template usage. Canva publishes the method but not the pool, a rate per use or what creators earn. Selling templates yourself has known math: a $12 Etsy sale leaves a US shop $10.41. Pick Creators for reach without a shop, and your own shop for price control.

Canva Creator program earnings are royalties paid from a monthly pool that Canva sizes from its subscription revenue and shares out by template usage, and Canva does not publish the pool, a rate per use, or what creators earn. Pick Canva Creators if you want reach inside Canva without running a shop and can live with pay you cannot forecast; sell templates yourself if you want to set the price and know the margin before the sale.

Checked October 2026 against Canva's Creators and Template Creator pages, its help articles on the Creators program and creator payments, the Contributor Agreement effective 14 January 2026, Canva's newsroom post on Canva Shield and its guide to selling designs made in Canva; Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy, payment processing fees and AI policy; and Gumroad's pricing and fees pages. This page reports what those documents say. It contains no earnings estimate for Canva Creators, because nothing published supports one. Agreement summaries are ours and are not legal advice.

Both routes start from the same skill: designing a template someone else can finish. If you are still choosing what to make, our hub on creating a digital product compares the formats. If you already design in Canva, this page is about where the design should live.

The table has one row that decides most cases. In your own shop, the pay per sale is arithmetic you can do today. In the Creators program, it is a share of a number Canva keeps private.

Canva Creator program earnings: what Canva documents

Canva documents how the money is divided and when it is paid. It does not document how much there is. Its help page reads: "For templates, how much you'll receive from the royalty pool will depend on how many template usages you have (i.e. each time a design is downloaded, printed, or presented). Creators are paid for both Free and Pro template usage."

How a template turns into a royalty
  1. 01
    Apply with a portfolio

A public link with 5 to 10 design examples.

  2. 02
    Template passes review

Guidelines are supplied after you are accepted.

  3. 03
    Canva users use it

A usage is a download, a print or a presentation.

  4. 04
    Usages counted for the month

On Free and Pro accounts alike.

  5. 05
    Share of the royalty pool

The pool grows with Canva's subscription revenue.

  6. 06
    Paid around the 15th

Once your balance reaches $10, or $25 by wire.

On the pool itself, the same page says: "The size of our Royalty Pool grows with Canva's subscription revenues and is calculated every month. The exact numbers month-per-month is confidential business information." The Contributor Agreement adds two things a planner should know. Canva pays "a royalty for each unique, de-duplicated license issued", which reads as: the same person exporting your template ten times is not ten payments. And Canva "may suspend payment or modify the royalty model and/or payment schedule at any time".

The mechanics are plainer. Canva aims to pay on the 15th of each month once the amount due reaches $10, or $25 for wire transfers, after any tax it withholds. Payout runs through PayPal or a bank account, including Payoneer and Wise, and Canva needs a W-8 or W-9 tax form before it pays anything. The agreement says royalties held for five years are forfeited, which is a reason to finish the payout setup on day one.

That figure shows the program is funded. It does not tell you what your first twenty templates will earn, and no honest source can. Any figure in a creator's own post is one account's result, under a model Canva can change. Once you are accepted, your own dashboard is the only real data.

Revenue per 1,000: the comparison you can and cannot make

You can calculate what 1,000 sales leave you in your own shop. You cannot calculate what 1,000 uses pay inside Canva, and the two are not the same event. A sale is a stranger deciding your template is worth $12. A usage is a subscriber exporting a design they started from your layout, at no extra cost to them.

Illustrative arithmetic on published US rates, before refunds and tax. It is not a forecast: the fee is known, the 1,000 sales are not. Canva Creators has no bar because Canva publishes no rate. The honest reading is that the two models hide different numbers. Your own shop hides the volume: you know what a sale pays and have no idea how many you will make. Canva hides the rate: usage can be large, because your template sits in front of people who are already designing, and you have no idea what each use is worth. Sell templates on Canva's marketplace: who gets in

You cannot simply list a template on Canva. Its Template Creator page says creators "must apply and be accepted into the program", and that the program "is currently in BETA, so we are taking early applications". There are three kinds of creator, and one of the doors is shut.

  • Template Creators. Open. Canva asks for a public portfolio link, with no login required, showing 5 to 10 design examples, and says an answer may take up to a couple of months.
  • Element Creators. Paused. These are the photographers and illustrators who supply the element library, and Canva's page says: "As of 2025, we're not accepting new applications for Element Creators."
  • Education Specialty Creators. Open to verified teachers with a Canva for Education account who make classroom resources.
Before you apply as a Template Creator
  • You are over 18, or the legal age to sign an agreement where you live
  • A portfolio at a public link that opens without a login
  • Five to ten finished designs in a mix of formats, all your own work
  • Nothing AI-generated: the agreement does not permit it
  • No design you already sell elsewhere and want to keep selling
  • A PayPal or bank account, and a W-8 or W-9 ready to submit
  • Patience for a reply that can take a couple of months
  • A plan for the meantime, such as your own shop

Canva contributors pay and terms: the clauses that matter

The agreement calls every creator a Contributor, which is why "Canva contributor" and "Canva creator" turn up for the same search. Four of its clauses shape what the program is worth to you.

  • Canva can change the model. It may modify the royalty model or payment schedule at any time. Royalties already earned are credited under the model that applied when you earned them, and you can leave if you disagree.
  • Canva can refuse or remove. It may decline any submission or take content down at its discretion, and may end your participation without cause on 30 days' notice. You can also remove your own content at any time.
  • AI training is opt-out. The agreement gives Canva the right to use submitted content to develop AI models. You can opt out in your privacy settings, and doing so ends your eligibility for the separate payment Canva makes for that use.
  • No AI-generated submissions. "AI-generated content is not permitted." The work needs human authorship as its creative source.

Selling templates yourself: what you take on

Selling yourself means delivering a Canva template link to a paying customer through a store you control. Canva's licence allows it for original designs, with one condition: a template that includes Pro content can only be sold as a template link, never as a PDF or other file. Our tutorial on how to make Canva templates to sell covers the build and the delivery PDF.

What you gain is every decision. You set the price, bundle three designs into a suite, run a sale, and answer the customer who wants a different size. What you take on is everything Canva would have handled: finding buyers, listing images, messages and refunds. On Etsy the marketplace supplies search traffic and charges about 13% of a $12 sale; the steps and the category choices are in our guide to selling Canva templates on Etsy. On a direct store such as Gumroad there is no built-in traffic, and the full list of options is in where to sell digital products.

The part neither route does for you is choosing what to make and what to charge. Our Digital Products program covers that ground, with competitor analysis, a template creation lesson for Canva and Notion, and pricing.

Canva Creator vs Etsy: the reach-versus-margin decision

Two questions sort it: do you already have people to sell to, and are you willing to run a shop?

Where a template designer should start
Willing to run a shop
Etsy first. Its search brings the buyers; you handle listings, messages and fees of about 13% on a $12 sale.
Your own store. You set the price, serve your own audience and pay a fee you can calculate in advance.
Only want to design
Canva Creators, if accepted. Reach inside Canva and no customers to serve, for pay you cannot forecast.
Creators for library designs, plus one direct product for your audience. Different designs in each.
No audience yet
Audience already

Our decision map, built from the documented terms above. The highlighted corner is where price control is worth the most.

Pick by what you want to own
Pick Canva Creators if
  • You want to design and never answer a customer
  • You make broad, reusable layouts in volume
  • A variable monthly royalty is acceptable to you
  • Three years of exclusivity per template is acceptable
  • You can wait a couple of months for an answer
Sell templates yourself if
  • You want to set the price and change it
  • You design for a specific buyer, such as one trade
  • You want to know your margin before the sale
  • You want the same design in more than one store
  • You need to be selling this week

Can you do both? Yes, with separate work. Because of the exclusivity clause, treat the two as different catalogs: general-purpose layouts for Canva's library, and niche, buyer-specific suites for your shop. The niche work is also where a price is easiest to defend, since nobody pays $12 for a layout they can find free inside Canva.

Alternatives worth knowing

  • Creative Market. A curated marketplace for design assets with a Canva Templates category. Its help center says shops earn 50% of list price by default and that each shop application is reviewed by a person. You set the price; it brings designers and businesses.
  • Your own site. The most control and the most work, since you supply every visitor.
  • Client work. Canva's licence lets you design for a client if you transfer the design to that one client. It is a service, not a product, and it pays from the first project.

Canva Creators vs selling templates yourself: FAQ

How much do Canva Creators earn?

Canva does not say. Its help page explains the method: royalties come from a monthly pool that grows with Canva's subscription revenue and is shared according to template usage. It also states that the monthly pool figures are confidential business information. We found no first-party figure for what a creator earns per template or per month, so any number you see quoted is one person's account, not a rate. Checked October 2026.

How does the Canva Creator program pay?

In royalties, monthly. For templates, your share of the royalty pool depends on how many usages you have, which Canva defines as each time a design is downloaded, printed or presented, on both Free and Pro accounts. Canva aims to pay on the 15th of each month once your balance reaches $10, or $25 for wire transfers, through PayPal or a bank account. Checked October 2026.

Can you sell templates on Canva?

Only through the Canva Creators program, and it is not selling in the usual sense. You apply, and if you are accepted you publish templates to Canva's library and receive royalties when people use them. You do not set a price and there is no checkout. To sell a Canva template at your own price, deliver a template link through a marketplace such as Etsy or your own store.

Is the Canva Creators application open?

For Template Creators, yes, with limits: Canva describes the program as in beta and taking early applications, asks for a public portfolio with 5 to 10 design examples, and says an answer can take up to a couple of months. For Element Creators, no. Canva's Creators page says that as of 2025 it is not accepting new applications. Checked October 2026.

Can I publish a template on Canva and also sell it on Etsy?

Plan on separate designs. Canva's Contributor Agreement, effective 14 January 2026, licenses an accepted template to Canva on an exclusive basis for three years from submission and bars the design from competing online graphic design platforms in that time. If you want both channels, make different templates for each and ask Canva's Creators support how the clause applies to you.

Does Canva accept AI-generated templates from creators?

No. The Contributor Agreement states that AI-generated content is not permitted and that submissions need human authorship as the creative source, and Canva's Creators page says obvious AI content will be rejected. Etsy takes a different line for your own shop: it allows items made with AI tools from your prompts if you disclose that in the listing description. Checked October 2026.

Is Canva Creators better than selling on Etsy?

They solve different problems. Creators gives you reach inside Canva with no shop to run, in exchange for pay you cannot forecast and three years of exclusivity per template. Etsy gives you a price you set and fees you can calculate, about 13% on a $12 sale for a US shop, in exchange for doing the selling. Designers who dislike customer service lean one way; sellers who want control lean the other.
