Gumroad File Size Limit: Upload Caps and Delivery Options

Gumroad file size limit: 20 GB per file on paid products, 250 MB total on free ones, plus the 500MB Download all cap, streaming and large-file delivery.

A

Quick answer

The Gumroad file size limit is 20 GB per single file on products priced above $0.99, with no cap on the number of files, and 250 MB in total on free products. The Download all button only appears under 500MB. Large video can be streamed instead of downloaded, and versions plus email updates let you re-deliver new files to past buyers, which Etsy's 20MB, five-file listings cannot match.

The Gumroad file size limit is 20 GB per single file for any product priced above $0.99, and you can attach as many files as you want; free products are capped at 250 MB for all files combined. Those numbers come from Gumroad's help article on file size limits, checked October 2026.

The upload cap is rarely what trips sellers up. The quieter limits are: the Download all button disappears above 500MB, streamed video tops out at 1080p, the in-browser reader and Send to Kindle have their own size ceilings, and a free lead magnet hits 250 MB long before a paid product hits anything. This guide covers every limit, how to deliver very large products cleanly, and why Gumroad's update tools are the real reason sellers with big files move off Etsy. If you are still setting up your store, start with our guide to selling digital products on Gumroad, then come back here before you upload.

Who needs to plan around these limits

Most ebook and template sellers never come near a Gumroad limit; a PDF or a Canva link is a few megabytes. The limits start to matter for four kinds of products:

  • Video courses and tutorials, where a single module exported at high quality can run to several gigabytes and buyers expect to stream as well as download.
  • Design asset packs, such as layered mockups, texture libraries and font families, which add up quickly and are usually sold as ZIPs.
  • Audio products, including sample packs, stems and lossless albums, where WAV files are large and buyers want everything at once.
  • Free lead magnets, because the 250 MB cap on free products is far tighter than the paid limit and is the one sellers hit most by surprise.

If your product falls into one of these, read the packaging and delivery sections before uploading. Restructuring folders after the first buyers have downloaded is possible, but it confuses people who already know where things are.

Gumroad file size limit: every cap in one table

All limits below were checked against Gumroad's Help Center in October 2026: file size limits, preparing videos for streaming, the Gumroad Library and sending purchases to Kindle. Gumroad changes features often, so re-check the source before a large launch.

Gumroad adds one line of perspective in the same article: it rarely sees anyone upload files larger than 5GB. If your product is bigger than that, the limit still fits, but the buyer's connection may not. Gumroad's own troubleshooting page for buyers notes that some internet providers time out on very large downloads, and suggests sending the purchase to Dropbox as a faster route (checked October 2026).

What is the Gumroad upload limit for free products?

A product priced at $0 can hold 250 MB in total, not per file. The same cap applies when you use pay-what-you-want pricing with a $0 minimum, because Gumroad treats the product as free. This is the limit that catches creators building lead magnets: a free sample pack of mockups, a preview video or a free audio pack goes over 250 MB quickly.

Three ways to stay inside it:

  • Make the free product a sample, not the full pack. Two mockups instead of twenty, one track instead of the album. That is better marketing anyway.
  • Compress before uploading. Gumroad recommends the free Handbrake app for video, with the Normal preset for computer and TV viewing (checked October 2026). Export images as optimized JPG or WebP previews rather than full-resolution PSDs.
  • Set a minimum price above $0.99. The product then falls under the 20 GB per-file limit. A low price also filters for buyers who intend to use the file.

How Gumroad delivers a file, end to end

Knowing the path a file takes explains most of the limits. Every step is a place where size, format or a setting changes what the buyer gets.

From upload to the buyer's device
  1. 01
    Upload to Content tab

Files, folders, pages, videos, stamped PDFs and text, per product or per version.

  2. 02
    Buyer pays

Gumroad emails a receipt with a unique link to the download page.

  3. 03
    Download page

Shows content as you built it. Download all appears under 500MB.

  4. 04
    Buyer's choice

Download, stream video, read PDF or EPUB in the browser, send to Kindle or Dropbox.

  5. 05
    Library and app

Buyers with an account find every purchase in their Library on web and mobile.

Buyers do not need an account to buy. Gumroad identifies them by the email entered at checkout, and they can always reach the content through the link in their receipt, per its article on how purchases work for customers (checked October 2026). Gumroad may ask a buyer to re-enter their email for security, and its content protection page says it does this when a link is opened from a different location.

How do you deliver large files on Gumroad?

A paid product can be very large in total, because the 20 GB cap applies per file and the number of files is unlimited. The work is in making a large product easy to receive.

Packaging a large product for clean delivery
  1. 1
Split by what buyers use together

Separate the core files from the extras: a 4K pack and a 1080p pack, or each course module on its own.

  2. 2
Keep each file well under 20 GB

Smaller parts survive slow connections better. A failed 2GB download is cheaper to retry than a failed 18GB one.

  3. 3
Use folders and pages on the Content tab

Group parts into folders and add an instructions page so buyers know what to download first.

  4. 4
Add one ZIP if the total passes 500MB

Download all disappears above 500MB, so a single ZIP gives buyers the one-click option back.

  5. 5
Stream video instead of shipping it

Turn on Disable file downloads for videos that do not need to be offline. No file sits on the buyer's device.

  6. 6
    Run a test purchase

Gumroad offers a test purchase feature. Check every file opens on desktop and mobile before you announce.

On naming: Gumroad shows file names on the download page, so use names a buyer understands, such as "01-Start-Here.pdf" and "02-Mockups-Part-1.zip". Gumroad's own instructions for zipping on Mac and PC are in the same file size article.

Should you link to Google Drive or Dropbox instead?

Only when a file truly cannot fit, for example a single raw asset above 20 GB. A link inside your content page works, but you give up what Gumroad does for files it hosts: unique download links, the email check for new locations, stamping and streaming. Gumroad also blocks products whose only delivery is telling buyers to message the seller somewhere else, per its page on things not allowed on Gumroad (checked October 2026). Products with real files or content attached are not affected. If you do host externally, set the share link to view-only and keep a Gumroad-hosted file in the product as well. If you do, our tutorial on delivering digital products with Google Drive covers the sharing settings that keep the link from leaking.

What delivery options does Gumroad offer?

Gumroad's content page is closer to a small course platform than a file locker. These are the options that matter for large products, all checked in October 2026.

  • Downloads. Any file type, delivered through the receipt link, the download page and the buyer's Library. Buyers with an account can also save files to Dropbox from the Download all menu (Gumroad Help).
  • Streaming video. Gumroad recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, transcodes videos after the product's first sale, and supports subtitles in VTT, SRT, SUB and SBV formats (Gumroad Help).
  • In-browser reading. PDFs and EPUBs up to 32 MB open in a reader that remembers the buyer's place. You can turn the Read and Send to Kindle buttons off per file.
  • PDF stamping. Adds the buyer's email and Gumroad's logo to the first page of a PDF. Gumroad describes it as a deterrent, not DRM, and it cannot be used on password-protected PDFs (Gumroad Help).
  • License keys. For software, a key per purchase that your app can verify through Gumroad's API. Gumroad notes keys do not limit access to audio, video or ebook files (Gumroad Help).
  • Community access. Integrations with Circle and Discord invite buyers automatically (Gumroad Help).
  • Mobile app. Buyers can play audio, video, PDF and EPUB files in the Gumroad app; ZIP-only products are desktop downloads (Gumroad Help).

Versions and updates: the quiet reason sellers switch

Large products are rarely finished. Courses gain lessons, font families gain weights, preset packs gain looks. On Gumroad the update loop has three parts:

  1. Edit the content. Add or replace files on the product's Content tab. Gumroad says customers see the product just as you see it in the editor (checked October 2026).
  2. Use versions for tiers. Versions let you sell, for example, a standard and a complete edition from one product, each with its own content, and reassign a buyer to another version without charging or refunding them (Gumroad Help).
  3. Email past buyers. Send an email update to customers of a product, filtered by version, tier, purchase date or amount paid. You can embed key emails into the content page so later buyers see them too. Gumroad only lets you send emails once you have earned $100 after fees and received a payout (checked October 2026).

Etsy's digital-listing help page covers adding and removing files on a listing, but it does not describe a way to notify past buyers of new files (checked October 2026). For a seller who updates often, that is the difference between a product that stays current for every buyer and one where each update means a round of individual messages.

Gumroad vs Etsy for large digital products

Etsy is a search engine with a checkout; Gumroad is a delivery system with a checkout. For small printables, Etsy's buyer traffic usually matters more than any file feature. For anything heavy, the limits decide for you. Etsy instant-download listings accept up to five files with a maximum of 20MB each (Etsy Help, checked October 2026).

Gumroad's fees above are from its fees page: 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale, plus card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30, and a flat 30% on sales through its Discover marketplace (checked October 2026). Many sellers run both: Etsy listings for small products that bring new buyers, and Gumroad for the large bundle, the course and the updates. Which platform for which file
Etsy fits
  • Printables and planners under 20MB
  • Canva template links in a PDF
  • Buyers who find you through search
  • Products you rarely update
Gumroad fits
  • Video, audio and course files
  • Mockup packs, font families, presets
  • Products you update and re-deliver
  • Buyers who arrive from your own audience

Common mistakes with large Gumroad products

  • Pricing a big lead magnet at $0. It hits the 250 MB total cap. Trim it, or charge a token price.
  • Shipping 4K video for streaming. Streaming tops out at 1080p, so a 4K master wastes upload time unless buyers download it.
  • One giant file. It works under 20 GB, but every failed download restarts from zero. Split it.
  • No start-here page. Buyers facing twenty files email support. One instruction page saves those messages.
  • Announcing before testing. Videos transcode after the first sale, and stamping takes a moment. Test-purchase, then launch.

Delivery is one piece of a product business; the bigger levers are what you sell and how you launch it. Our Digital Products program covers product design, pricing tiers, Gumroad setup and launch emails as one system.

Before you publish a large product

Do this before you hit Publish
  • Confirm the price is above $0.99 if any single file is large, or the total passes 250 MB
  • Split files so none comes close to 20 GB, and name them in download order
  • Add a single ZIP if the product totals more than 500MB
  • Decide download or stream-only for every video, and add subtitles
  • Add a PDF or EPUB version of written content for phone readers
  • Turn PDF stamping on or off, knowing it hides Download all
  • Write a start-here page with what to open first and how to get help
  • Run a test purchase and open every file on desktop and mobile

Gumroad file size limit: FAQ

What is the Gumroad file size limit?

For a product priced above $0.99, the largest single file you can upload is 20 GB, and you can add as many files as you want to the product. For a free product, or a pay-what-you-want product with a $0 minimum, all files together can total 250 MB. Both limits come from Gumroad's help article on file size limits, checked October 2026.

Why is there no Download all button on my Gumroad product?

Gumroad only shows Download all when the total content of a product is under 500MB. It also hides the option when a PDF in the product is stamped with buyer information. The workaround Gumroad suggests is to upload a single ZIP file of the content, so buyers can get everything in one download. Keep the individual files too if buyers need to pick and choose.

How do I deliver files larger than 20 GB on Gumroad?

Split the content into several files under 20 GB each, since a paid product can hold as many files as you want. Group them into folders on the content page and name them in order, such as Part 1 and Part 2. For video, compress before uploading or use streaming, which serves at most 1080p. Linking to a cloud folder is a fallback, not the default, because you lose Gumroad's per-buyer link protection.

Can I stop buyers from downloading my videos on Gumroad?

Yes. After uploading a video, turn on the Disable file downloads toggle for that file on the Content tab. Buyers can then only stream it on Gumroad. Gumroad signs and expires streaming links to discourage sharing, streams HD at 1080p and reduces 4K uploads to 1080p for streaming. Videos are transcoded after the product's first sale, which can take from minutes to hours.

How do I send updated files to people who already bought?

Add or replace the files on the product's Content tab; Gumroad says customers see the product as you see it in the editor. Then send an email update to customers of that product, filtered by product or version if needed. Note that Gumroad only lets you send emails after you have earned $100 after fees and received a payout. Test the result with a test purchase first.

Is Gumroad or Etsy better for large digital files?

Gumroad. Etsy instant downloads accept up to five files with a maximum of 20MB each, which rules out most video, audio, mockup and font-family products without a workaround. Gumroad paid products take files up to 20 GB each, with no cap on the number of files, and add streaming, PDF stamping and versions. Etsy brings more search traffic for small printables and templates.

Which file types work in the Gumroad mobile app?

Gumroad lists audio (AIFF, AAC, MP3, VBR, ALAC, WAV, Audible), video (H.264, M4V, MP4, MOV) and books (PDF, EPUB) as files buyers can use in the app. A product made only of ZIP files will not show usefully in the app, because the app cannot open them. Add a PDF or EPUB version of written products for phone readers.
