Etsy coupons for digital products live under Shop Manager, Marketing, Sales and Discounts: promo codes, sales, minimum-order discounts, bundles and targeted offers. For a file-only shop, the useful set is targeted offers to recover carts and favorites, minimum-order discounts that move buyers to bundles, and short promo codes for launches. Free-shipping codes do nothing for files. This tutorial walks through each setup and the rules that keep discounts from eating your margin.
Etsy coupons for digital products are set up in Shop Manager under Marketing, then Sales and Discounts, where Etsy offers promo codes, sales, discounted bundles and targeted offers. For a shop that sells files, the ones worth running are targeted offers for abandoned carts and favorites, minimum-order discounts that nudge buyers toward a bundle, and short promo codes for launches; free-shipping codes do nothing, because a download has no shipping to remove.
Settings and limits checked in October 2026 against Etsy's Help Center articles How to Set Up Sales and Discounts for Your Shop, Why Aren't My Targeted Offers Sending to Shoppers? and How Etsy Funded Coupons Work for Sellers. Etsy now calls shop coupon codes "promo codes"; buyers still see a coupon field in the cart.
By the end of this tutorial you will have three things running: a targeted offer flow that follows up with shoppers who left something in their cart or favorited it, one minimum-order discount that rewards buying more than one file, and a reusable launch promo code with a usage cap. Discounts are one channel among several; for how they fit with email, social and search, see our digital product marketing playbook.
Before you start
- Your shop is open and listings are active (codes apply only to active listings)
- You know what each listing keeps after Etsy’s fees at full price
- You have decided the lowest price you will accept on each product
- At least two listings pair naturally, for a bundle or minimum-order offer
- You have a place to share a code: an email list, social profile or file insert
- Your regular prices have been in place for a while (Etsy requires genuine sale prices)
The last point is Etsy policy, not style. Its sales events help says you cannot artificially raise a price and then lower it to look like a sale, and the original price must have been in place for a substantial amount of time. You are also responsible for following consumer protection laws where you sell.
Not sure a discount is worth it at all? Our guide to whether to discount digital products works through the margin math first.
Etsy coupons for digital products: the tools, ranked
| Tool | What it does | Best use for files |
|---|---|---|
| Promo code | A code buyers enter at checkout | Social posts, email list, inserts in your files, launch week |
| Sale | Automatic discount, no code, shown in search | Etsy sales events and short seasonal windows |
| Encourage bigger orders | Discount once an order reaches a spend or item count | Pushing buyers from one file to a set |
| Discounted bundle | Up to three listings bought together for less | Products that pair: planner + stickers, template + guide |
| Targeted offers | Codes Etsy emails to interested shoppers | Recovering carts and favorites without public discounting |
| Make an Offer | Buyers propose a price up to your limit | Rarely useful for low-priced files; USD shops only |
Two rules from Etsy decide how these interact. When several sales or offers apply to one listing, only the highest discount is used. Bundles do not stack with other promotions, and a buyer can redeem only one targeted offer at a time. So running more discounts at once does not give buyers more; it just makes your own numbers harder to read.
Etsy targeted coupons: the abandoned-cart and favorites flow
Targeted offers are the most useful discount for digital sellers because they only go to people who have already shown interest. Nobody browsing search sees a lower price, so your list price stays the price. Etsy emails the code automatically; you only choose the offer and the discount.
| Offer | Who gets it | How often a shopper can receive it | Code expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abandoned cart | Item in a cart for more than 2 hours | At most once every 2 days | 60 days |
| Favorited item | Shopper favorited one of your items | At most once every 2 days | 60 days |
| Interested shopper | Etsy judges interest from repeat and recent views | At most once every 30 days | 7 days, single use |
| Thank you | Order completed | After each completed order | 1 year |
- 01Shopper shows interest
Adds a file to their cart, favorites it, or keeps viewing it.
- 02Etsy sends the email
Automatically, to shoppers who receive Etsy marketing emails.
- 03Shopper returns
Enters the code at checkout; the highest single discount applies.
- 04Thank you offer
After the order completes, a code for their next purchase.
- 1Open Sales and Discounts
Shop Manager on Etsy.com, then the Marketing tab, then Sales and Discounts.
- 2Find Send offers to interested buyers
Expected result: the abandoned cart, favorited item, interested shopper and thank you options.
- 3Start with abandoned cart
It reaches the warmest shoppers. Set a modest discount you can afford on your cheapest listing.
- 4Add favorited item at the same rate
Favorites are interest without urgency; a code gives them a reason to decide.
- 5Turn on the thank you offer
It goes out after each completed order and lasts a year, so it suits shops with related products.
- 6Check Offer details and stats monthly
Set the range to All time to see orders with a discount, items sold, average order value and revenue from discounts.
A campaign runs until you stop it or the offer's expiry passes. If you end a campaign, Etsy stops sending new codes, but codes already sent can still be used until they expire. Some shoppers opt out of Etsy marketing emails, so not every abandoned cart gets an email; that is a delivery limit, not a setup error.
Etsy discount code for digital products: promo codes that do a job
A promo code is the discount you share yourself: in an email, on social media, in your shop announcement, or inside the files a buyer already downloaded. Etsy gives three types. Percentage off can be any whole number from 5% to 75% off the list price. Fixed amount off takes a set sum from the list price. Free standard shipping removes the shipping fee, which for files is nothing.
- 1Marketing, then Sales and Discounts, then Create a promo code
In Shop Manager on Etsy.com.
- 2Choose Percentage off or Fixed amount off
Name the code so you can recognise it later, such as LAUNCHWEEK.
- 3Pick the listings
Only the new product, or Add all active listings. New listings are not added to a listing-specific code automatically.
- 4Set the usage limits
A maximum number of uses across all buyers, and one use per buyer. The total cap cannot be changed after creation.
- 5Confirm and create code
Expected result: the code appears in Offer details and stats with its terms.
- 6Deactivate it when the launch ends
You can deactivate a code at any time, even though its cap is fixed.
If you set a cap, say so where you share the code: Etsy suggests wording such as "Only 50 available" and stating any expiry date. A capped, dated code reads as a launch offer; an endless code shared everywhere becomes the real price.
Minimum-order discounts that push bundles
Encourage bigger orders sets a discount that unlocks only once an order reaches a spend amount or a number of items. For digital shops this is the cleanest way to sell sets, because the buyer chooses what to combine and you never lower the price of a single file. Etsy notes one side effect: a sale with a minimum order is shop-wide, so you cannot exclude listings from it.
Discounted bundles are the fixed version: up to three listings that buyers must purchase together to get the discount. Each listing can sit in only one bundle at a time, and bundles do not stack with other promotions. Use a bundle where the pairing is obvious (a planner and its matching sticker set), and a minimum-order discount where buyers mix freely across a range.
Etsy free shipping coupon for digital downloads: skip it
Etsy lets you build a promo code or sale around free standard shipping. On a digital listing the buyer downloads the files right after purchase, so there is no shipping fee for the code to remove. The offer appears, the buyer gains nothing, and you have used a promotion slot on noise. If your shop mixes printed and digital products, a free shipping promotion can apply alongside a list-price discount when an order qualifies for both, but that only helps the physical items.
What a coupon really costs
Etsy charges its 6.5% transaction fee on the order total and its US payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25 on the total sale price (checked October 2026 on the Fees and Payments Policy and payment processing fees page). The $0.20 listing fee is charged again each time an item sells. With illustrative numbers: a $10 file keeps about $8.60 after those three fees. With a 20% code it sells for $8 and keeps about $6.79. The code took $2 off the price and about $1.81 off what you keep, which is a 21% cut to your take-home for a 20% discount, because the fixed fees do not shrink.
That gap widens the cheaper the file and the bigger the discount, and it grows again if the order came through Offsite Ads. Our Etsy digital product profit margin guide shows the same math at five price points. To see whether discounted orders actually raise your average order value, compare Offer details and stats with the overall numbers in Stats; our Etsy Stats guide explains those metrics.
Etsy-funded coupons are different: Etsy sometimes runs public or private codes that it pays for. When a buyer uses one in your shop, you receive the full order amount and pay the same fees as without it, so you do not need to do anything to take part beyond using Etsy Payments.
Troubleshooting
- A new listing is not getting the discount. Listing-specific promo codes and sales do not add new listings automatically. Edit the code or sale and add them.
- Targeted offer stats look empty. The Sales and discounts stats default to This month. Switch the range to All time.
- A shopper never got the abandoned cart email. They may have opted out of Etsy marketing emails, or already received an offer email in the last two days.
- The buyer got a smaller discount than expected. Two offers applied and Etsy used the highest one, or a bundle discount and a sale clashed. Only one applies.
- You cannot exclude a listing from a sale. The sale has a minimum order, which makes it shop-wide. Remove the minimum to choose listings.
- You want to change a code's usage cap. It cannot be edited after creation. Deactivate it and create a new code.
Coupons recover sales the listing already earned; they do not fix a listing nobody wants. If the product, the preview images or the price are the real issue, our Digital Products program covers product research, listing pages and pricing in depth. Etsy coupons for digital products: FAQ
How do I create a coupon code on Etsy?
In Shop Manager on Etsy.com, open the Marketing tab, choose Sales and Discounts, then Create a promo code. Pick the discount type, choose the listings it applies to or add all active listings, set any usage limits, then review and select Confirm and create code. Etsy now calls shop coupon codes promo codes. Buyers enter the code in their cart before checkout.
Do free shipping coupons work for digital downloads on Etsy?
They do nothing useful for a digital-only order. Buyers download the files right after purchase and there is no shipping charge on a digital listing, so a free standard shipping code has nothing to take off. If your shop sells only files, use a percentage or fixed amount off, a targeted offer, or a discounted bundle instead.
What are Etsy targeted offers?
Targeted offers are promo codes Etsy emails automatically to shoppers who showed interest in your items. There are four: abandoned cart, favorited item, interested shopper and thank you after a purchase. They only reach shoppers who receive Etsy marketing emails. Each has its own expiry, from 7 days for interested shopper offers to one year for thank you offers. Set them up under Sales and Discounts.
How much can I discount with an Etsy promo code?
A percentage-off promo code can be any whole number from 5% to 75% off the list price. You can also offer a fixed amount off, or free standard shipping. Whatever the type, remember that Etsy charges its percentage fees on the discounted price but the fixed per-sale fees stay the same, so the discount costs you slightly less than its face value but more as a share of what you keep.
Can Etsy discounts stack?
Mostly no. If more than one sale or offer applies to a listing, Etsy uses only the highest discount. Buyers can redeem one targeted offer at a time, and discounted bundles do not stack with other sales. The exception is free shipping: a list-price discount and a free shipping promotion can apply to the same order if it qualifies for both, which matters only to shops that ship physical items.
Who pays for Etsy-funded coupons?
Etsy does. Etsy sometimes runs public or private coupon codes that it pays for in full. When a buyer uses one in your shop, you receive the full order amount and pay the same fees you would without the coupon. These are separate from the promo codes you create, which come out of your own revenue.
