A sales funnel for digital products has four stages: a free lead magnet, a low-priced tripwire, a core offer sold by email and an upsell. The stages multiply, so the opt-in rate at the top moves revenue more than anything below it. In the illustrative example here, 2,000 visitors become 400 subscribers and $1,005 in sales, and doubling the opt-in rate doubles the total.
A sales funnel for digital products has four stages: a free lead magnet that collects an email address, a low-priced tripwire offered straight after signup, a core product sold through a short email sequence, and an upsell offered at or after checkout. Each stage has one conversion rate and the rates multiply, which is why the arithmetic matters more than the diagram: in the worked example below, 2,000 visitors become 400 subscribers, 12 core buyers and $1,005.
Checked on 11 October 2026. The funnel numbers in this article are illustrative inputs, chosen to show the mechanics; they are not results from a real store. The two benchmarks come from Unbounce's landing page conversion data (Q4 2024) and Mailchimp's email marketing benchmarks (data last updated December 2023). Platform rules are from Etsy's Off-Platform Transactions Policy and Gumroad's help page on upsells.
What a sales funnel for digital products is, and who needs one
A funnel is a fixed path with a number on every step. A visitor arrives, trades an email address for something free, sees a small paid offer, gets a handful of emails about the main product, and is offered one more thing when they buy. You can draw that in thirty seconds. The work is in knowing what share of people move from each step to the next, and which share is the one holding the rest back.
- 01Traffic
2,000 visitors a month reach the opt-in page
- 021. Lead magnet
A free, specific download. 20% opt in: 400 subscribers
- 032. Tripwire
A $9 offer on the thank-you page. 5% buy: $180
- 043. Core offer
A $49 product sold by email. 3% buy: $588
- 054. Upsell
A $79 bundle at checkout. 25% of buyers add it: $237
Rates and prices are illustrative inputs, before platform fees and refunds.
You need one if you sell from a checkout you control (your own site, Gumroad, Payhip, a course platform) and you have, or can get, a steady trickle of visitors. A funnel does not create traffic. It decides how much each visitor is worth, and our digital product marketing playbook covers where the visitors come from.
If Etsy is your only channel, the marketplace is your funnel and Etsy search is the top of it. You can still build an email list, but feed it with your own traffic. Etsy's Off-Platform Transactions Policy does not allow offering discounts, free items or other incentives that encourage members to purchase off Etsy, or sharing contact details to complete a sale elsewhere.
The funnel math: what 2,000 visitors turn into
Revenue from a funnel is visitors multiplied by a chain of rates and prices. Write the chain down once and every decision gets easier, because you can see what a change is worth before you make it.
| Stage | Illustrative input | Working | People | Revenue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visitors to the opt-in page | 2,000 a month | 2,000 visitors | ||
| 1. Lead magnet | 20% opt-in rate | 2,000 × 20% | 400 subscribers | $0 |
| 2. Tripwire at $9 | 5% of new subscribers | 400 × 5% × $9 | 20 buyers | $180 |
| 3. Core offer at $49 | 3% of subscribers | 400 × 3% × $49 | 12 buyers | $588 |
| 4. Upsell at $79 | 25% of core buyers | 12 × 25% × $79 | 3 buyers | $237 |
| Funnel total | $180 + $588 + $237 | $1,005 |
Three figures fall out of that table. Revenue per subscriber is $1,005 ÷ 400 = $2.51. Revenue per visitor is $1,005 ÷ 2,000 = about $0.50. And the traffic a target needs is the target divided by revenue per visitor: a $3,000 month takes about 6,000 visitors at these rates. All of it is before platform fees, refunds and anything you pay for traffic.
Now change one rate at a time and watch what moves.
| Double this rate | What it changes | Funnel total | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opt-in rate, 20% to 40% | Every stage after it doubles | $2,010 | +$1,005 |
| Core conversion, 3% to 6% | Core sales and upsell sales double | $1,830 | +$825 |
| Upsell take rate, 25% to 50% | Upsell sales double | $1,242 | +$237 |
| Tripwire conversion, 5% to 10% | Tripwire sales double | $1,185 | +$180 |
The order of that table is the argument of this article. The top of the funnel is worth the most because everything below is multiplied by it. The core offer comes second because it carries the upsell with it. The tripwire and upsell are worth having, and they are the last things to tune.
What published benchmarks say about your inputs
Two of the clicks in a funnel have public benchmarks, and they are lower than most funnel diagrams assume. Unbounce puts the median landing page conversion rate at 6.6% across industries. Mailchimp reports an average open rate of 35.63% and an average click rate of 2.62% across all users.
Source: Unbounce (41,000 landing pages, Q4 2024) and Mailchimp email benchmarks (data last updated December 2023), checked October 2026
Run the example again with a 6.6% opt-in rate and nothing else changed: 132 subscribers and about $332, a third of the first answer. A focused freebie page aimed at the right audience can beat a cross-industry median, but you only know that once you have measured it. Until then, plan on the low figure.
Stage 1: the lead magnet
The lead magnet is a free, specific, finished thing that solves the first step of the problem your paid product solves. A planner seller gives away one planner page. A template creator gives away one small template. A course creator gives away the first lesson as an email mini course. If the freebie attracts people who would never want the paid product, every rate below it falls.
- Make it usable in ten minutes. A checklist, a single template or a one-page guide gets used. A 60-page ebook gets saved and forgotten.
- Give it one page with one job. A headline naming the problem, one form, one button, and a line saying the reader is joining your email list.
- Deliver it by email. That confirms the address works. The setup is in our guide on how to deliver a freebie.
The rate to watch is the opt-in rate: subscribers divided by visitors to the opt-in page. If you need a starting point for the freebie itself, we have 47 lead magnet ideas sorted by niche.
Stage 2: the tripwire
A tripwire is a small paid product shown on the thank-you page, in the seconds after someone signs up. It is commonly priced between $7 and $27, low enough that the decision takes no deliberation. It does two jobs: it turns some subscribers into buyers on day one, and it earns back part of what the visitor cost you.
The best tripwire is one useful slice of the core product, not a discount on it. If the core product is a full planner bundle, the tripwire is the daily planner on its own. That way the buyer gets a real result for a few dollars and the core offer becomes the rest of the same thing. The rate to watch is tripwire buyers divided by new subscribers.
When to skip it: if your core product costs under about $30, a tripwire sits too close to it in price and the two compete. Put the core product on the thank-you page instead and move straight to the email sequence. Three stages that work beat four that leave the buyer choosing between two similar offers.
Stage 3: the core offer
The core offer is the product the funnel exists to sell, and most of its sales come from email in the first weeks after signup. A new subscriber is as interested as they will ever be, so the welcome sequence should teach, show the product and ask, in that order.
- Day 0Deliver the freebie
Send the download link and say what to do with it first. The tripwire sits on the thank-you page.
- Day 1One quick win
A short tip that gets a result with the freebie. No pitch.
- Day 3The problem behind the problem
Explain what the freebie does not solve, and introduce the core product as the answer.
- Day 5The offer
What is in it, who it is for, who it is not for, the price and one link to the sales page.
- Day 7Questions and objections
Answer the three questions buyers ask most. Link the sales page again.
- Day 10Last ask, then normal emails
A final reminder. Mention a deadline only if it is real. After this, subscribers join your regular list.
An illustrative schedule. Adjust the gaps to how often your audience expects to hear from you.
Two pages carry this stage. The sales page has to let a stranger decide without emailing you, which our piece on sales page psychology breaks down. The price has to fit the result, which is the subject of how to price a digital product. The rate to watch is core buyers divided by subscribers over their first 30 days.
Stage 4: the upsell
The upsell is one more offer made to someone who has just decided to buy. It costs nothing in traffic, which is why a modest take rate is worth having. There are three places to put it.
- At checkout. An add-on or a bundle upgrade shown before payment completes. Gumroad, for example, has three upsell types: add a product that pairs with the purchase (with an optional discount), replace the cart with a bundle, or offer an upgraded version. It shows the offer after the buyer presses Pay.
- On the delivery page or in the delivery email. A link to the next product, placed where every buyer looks. This works on any platform.
- By email, a week or two later. Once the buyer has used the product, offer the thing that extends it: the full bundle, an advanced version, feedback on their work.
Show the price of any add-on before the buyer confirms, and never pre-tick it. The rate to watch is upsell buyers divided by core buyers.
Digital product funnel examples for three kinds of seller
Here is the same four-stage shape applied to three product types. These are illustrative builds with example prices, put together to show how the stages relate. They are not case studies of real stores.
| Seller | Lead magnet | Tripwire | Core offer | Upsell |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printable planner shop | Free weekly planner page (PDF) | $7 undated daily planner | $29 full planner bundle | $49 printable library |
| Template creator | Free habit tracker template | $9 budget tracker | $39 full workspace template | $79 bundle of every template |
| Course creator | Free five-day email mini course | $19 recorded workshop | $149 self-paced course | $299 course plus feedback calls |
Read across any row and each stage is a larger piece of the same job. That is the test for your own funnel: could a buyer of stage two explain why stage three exists? If the answer needs a paragraph, the stages are unrelated products sharing a mailing list.
The best sales funnel for digital products depends on price and traffic
The best funnel is the shortest one that fits what you charge and how well the visitor knows you. Cold visitors need more steps before a purchase. Cheap products need fewer steps or the funnel costs more attention than the product is worth.
Between $30 and $100, the standard four stages fit as drawn. Once the funnel converts on your own traffic, other people's audiences become worth paying for, and our guide to an affiliate program for digital products shows the commission math.
Sales funnel tutorial for digital downloads: build it in this order
Build from the bottom up. A lead magnet with nothing to sell behind it collects subscribers who cool off while you finish the product.
- 1Finish the core product and its sales page
Expected result: one URL where a stranger can read, decide and pay without asking you anything.
- 2Cut the lead magnet out of the core product
Take the first step of the same job and make it free. Expected result: a file someone can use in ten minutes.
- 3Build the opt-in page and delivery
One form, one button, delivery by email. Expected result: you sign up with a fresh address and the file arrives.
- 4Write the welcome sequence
Six emails over ten days, with the offer in the fourth. Expected result: every new subscriber sees the core product without you sending anything by hand.
- 5Add the tripwire to the thank-you page
Only if the core price leaves room for it. Expected result: a paid offer on screen seconds after signup.
- 6Add the upsell
At checkout if your platform supports it, otherwise in the delivery email. Expected result: every buyer sees one more relevant offer.
- 7Measure the four rates for 30 days
Change nothing while you count. Expected result: an opt-in rate, a tripwire rate, a core rate and a take rate of your own.
This is where a guide runs out and practice starts. Our Digital Products program builds each piece with you: one module covers the landing page, the lead magnet and the welcome sequence, and another covers building the funnel, email sequences and upsells.
Find the weakest stage before you fix anything
After 30 days you will have four rates. Fix the one furthest up the funnel that is clearly weak, because improvements there multiply through everything below.
| Stage | Rate | How to calculate it | If it is weak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead magnet | Opt-in rate | Subscribers ÷ opt-in page visitors | Name one problem for one person in the headline. One form, one button. Match the freebie to the traffic source. |
| Tripwire | Tripwire conversion | Tripwire buyers ÷ new subscribers | Show it on the thank-you page, not days later. Make it the obvious next step after the freebie. |
| Core offer | Core conversion | Core buyers ÷ subscribers, first 30 days | Rewrite the sales page until nobody emails a question. Make one clear offer in the sequence and repeat it. |
| Upsell | Take rate | Upsell buyers ÷ core buyers | Offer something that extends the purchase. Show the price before the buyer confirms and never pre-tick it. |
Five mistakes that leak buyers
- A freebie unrelated to the paid product. It fills the list with people who wanted the free thing and nothing else. The fix is a freebie that is step one of the paid product's job.
- A tripwire that arrives by email three days later. By then the moment has passed. Put it on the thank-you page, where every new subscriber lands while the problem is still on their mind.
- A sales page linked once. One mention in the fifth email reaches only the people who opened that email. Make one clear offer and make it more than once.
- An upsell that repeats the purchase. Offering a near copy of what someone just bought reads as a mistake at checkout. Offer what extends it: the bundle, the templates, feedback on their work.
- Changing three stages in the same week. You will not know which change did what. Change one thing, then count for 30 days.
Do this week
- Write your chain on one line: visitors × opt-in × core rate × price
- Fill it with the low benchmark figures, then with your own once you have them
- Pick the first step of your product’s job and turn it into a ten-minute freebie
- Publish one opt-in page with one form and one button
- Sign up yourself with a fresh address and check the file arrives
- Draft the six emails, with the offer in the fourth
- Put one paid offer on the thank-you page
- Set a reminder for day 30 to calculate your four rates
The emails are the part most sellers leave unfinished. If you want more depth on list building and sequences, our email marketing guide for digital product creators picks up from the welcome sequence.
Sales funnels for digital products: FAQ
What is a sales funnel for digital products?
It is a fixed path from stranger to repeat buyer in four stages: a free lead magnet that collects an email address, a low-priced tripwire offered straight after signup, a core product sold through a short email sequence, and an upsell offered at or after checkout. Each stage has one conversion rate, and the rates multiply, so the weakest stage limits everything after it.
What is the best sales funnel for digital products?
The shortest one that fits your price and your traffic. A product under about $30 sold to people who already follow you needs a lead magnet and a direct offer. A product around $50 sold to cold traffic benefits from all four stages. A product above $100 usually needs an extra teaching step, such as a workshop or sample lesson, before the pitch.
How many visitors do I need for a digital product funnel to work?
Divide your revenue target by revenue per visitor. In this article's illustrative example, 2,000 visitors produce $1,005, or about $0.50 a visitor, so a $3,000 month needs about 6,000 visitors. Your own figure comes from your four rates and three prices. Run the funnel on a few hundred visitors first, then calculate; do not plan around borrowed rates.
What is a tripwire offer?
A tripwire is a small paid product, often priced between $7 and $27, offered on the thank-you page immediately after someone signs up for a freebie. Its job is to turn a new subscriber into a buyer while their attention is on the problem, and to earn back some of what the traffic cost. It works best as one useful piece of your core product.
Do I need a sales funnel if I only sell on Etsy?
Not to make Etsy sales: Etsy search is the top of that funnel. To build an email list you need your own traffic, because Etsy's Off-Platform Transactions Policy does not allow offering discounts, free items or other incentives that encourage members to purchase off Etsy, or sharing contact details to complete a sale elsewhere. Send Pinterest, video or search visitors to your opt-in page instead. Checked October 2026.
What conversion rates should I expect at each funnel stage?
Published benchmarks exist for two of the clicks. Unbounce reports a median landing page conversion rate of 6.6% across industries on Q4 2024 data, and Mailchimp reports an average email click rate of 2.62% across all users. Nobody publishes reliable figures for tripwire or upsell take rates, so treat any number you read as an input to test, and measure your own.
