An affiliate program for digital products is a setting you switch on in Gumroad, Whop or Lemon Squeezy, not software you build. The real work is choosing a commission your margins can carry (30%, 50% or recurring) and giving partners a one-page brief that makes promoting you easy. This guide covers the setup on each platform, the commission math with illustrative inputs, and the brief template.
To start an affiliate program for digital products, turn on the affiliate feature of the platform you already sell on (Gumroad, Whop and Lemon Squeezy all have one), set a commission your margins can carry, and give partners a short brief with angles and assets. The platform tracks the links and pays the commissions; your job is the rate and the recruiting.
Platform rules checked in October 2026 against Gumroad's help article on affiliates on Gumroad, Whop's docs on the affiliate program, and Lemon Squeezy's docs on affiliates for merchants, getting referrals and payouts. Rates and holds change; confirm in your dashboard before you announce terms.
Most sellers who try affiliates and give up made one of two mistakes: they picked a rate by copying someone else, or they turned the program on and waited for partners to appear. This guide fixes both. It is one channel in our digital product marketing playbook, and it works best once you already have a product that sells to your own audience, because affiliates amplify a working offer; they rarely rescue a weak one.
Before you start an affiliate program for digital products
An affiliate program costs you a share of every referred sale, so set it up when you know three numbers: your price, what you keep after platform fees, and how many visitors buy. If you have not tested your price yet, our guide to pricing digital products comes first.
- The product sells to your own audience without affiliates
- You know your net per sale after platform and payment fees
- The sales page answers the main objections on its own
- Your refund policy is written and visible
- You have screenshots, a demo and sample pages partners can use
- You have decided one-time or recurring commission for subscriptions
How do you set up Gumroad affiliates?
Gumroad has two separate programs. Your Affiliates are people you approve with a rate you choose. Gumroad Affiliates (formerly Global Affiliates) lets anyone promote your products for a fixed 10%, and you can opt out from the Affiliates dashboard. For your own affiliates, Gumroad's help center (checked October 2026) says:
- You set a commission between 1% and 75% of the total sale amount, per affiliate, and can change it or the products at any time.
- Their link sets a 30-day cookie; links made through Gumroad Affiliates use a 7-day cookie. If two affiliates referred the same buyer, the most recent click wins.
- Affiliates need a Gumroad account with a confirmed email before you can add them, or they can sign up through your affiliate sign-up form.
- Fees on an affiliate purchase are split between you and the affiliate in proportion to the commission.
- On memberships, the affiliate earns on every recurring charge while the referred customer stays subscribed, and you cannot end that commission while the affiliate remains on your account.
- 1Open the Affiliates dashboard
In the sidebar under Analytics.
- 2Add affiliate
Enter the email on their Gumroad account. Expected result: they appear in your list.
- 3Pick products and rate
Select one product or all products and set the commission percentage.
- 4Optional destination URL
Send their traffic to your own landing page instead of the product page.
- 5Decide on Gumroad Affiliates
Keep the 10% open program or toggle the opt-out and save.
- 6Send the brief
Gumroad emails them their link; you send the angles and assets.

How does the Whop affiliate program work?
Whop builds affiliates into every product. From your dashboard, open the Marketing dropdown and select Affiliates. According to Whop's docs (checked October 2026):
- The global affiliate rate applies to anyone who refers buyers. The default is 30%, and you can set any percentage.
- The member affiliate rate lets existing members earn a different rate for referrals. Set it to 0% and members earn the global rate instead.
- Custom rates for specific partners can be a percent or a fixed amount, on recurring payments or the first payment only, for the products you choose. You invite them by their Whop account email.
- There is a 30-day waiting period between a referred purchase and the affiliate being paid.
The member rate is the interesting lever for communities and memberships: your happiest members are often your best promoters, and a separate rate lets you reward them without opening the same terms to strangers. How do Lemon Squeezy affiliates work?
Lemon Squeezy's affiliate program is active on every store by default, but you do not have to use it. In the affiliate settings you set a default commission, the tracking length (how long the cookie lasts), which products earn referrals with optional per-product rates, and whether the first or last affiliate gets credit when a buyer clicked several links. Partners apply through your affiliate sign-up URL. If you sell from your own site rather than the Lemon Squeezy storefront, add their tracking script so referrals are recorded. Commissions are held for 30 days before becoming available, and payouts are created on the 1st and 15th of each month (checked October 2026).
What digital product affiliate commission should you pay?
Pick the rate from your margin and from how many referred buyers are actually new to you. A digital product has almost no cost per extra copy, so the question is not whether you can afford 50%, but whether the buyer would have found you anyway. Affiliates who promote to your existing followers, or coupon sites that catch buyers at checkout, collect commission on sales you would have made.
The tables below use illustrative inputs, not data from any seller or platform: a $49 product, $5 of platform and payment fees per sale, so $44 net. The split assumes the commission comes out of net, which matches how Gumroad shares fees in proportion to commission; other platforms calculate it differently, so run your own figures with our digital product fee calculator.
| One-time product (illustrative) | Affiliate earns | You keep | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct sale, no affiliate | $0.00 | $44.00 | Your baseline |
| 30% commission | $13.20 | $30.80 | Easy to justify on a new buyer |
| 40% commission | $17.60 | $26.40 | Common middle ground |
| 50% commission | $22.00 | $22.00 | Only if the buyer is truly new to you |
On a one-time product, the gap between 30% and 50% is $8.80 per sale in this example. If a 50% rate makes a partner promote you with a dedicated email instead of a passing mention, the extra sales usually outweigh it. If the partner would promote either way, 30% leaves you more.
Subscriptions change the math because the commission repeats. These rows use illustrative inputs again: a $20 monthly membership kept for six months, fees left out for clarity.
| Membership (illustrative) | Affiliate earns | You keep | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30% recurring | $36 | $84 | Partner earns while the member stays |
| 50% recurring | $60 | $60 | Generous; works for low-churn products |
| 50% first payment only | $10 | $110 | Cheap for you, weak pull for partners |
- Partners care whether buyers stay
- Stronger pull for serious promoters
- Cost grows with retention
- Hard to reverse on platforms that lock it in
- Cheaper over the member lifetime
- Simple to explain
- Partners may push low-fit buyers
- Less attractive for big partners
Lifetime commissions only sound expensive. A partner earning 30% of a member who stays two years still left you 70% of revenue you did not have. The risk is the opposite case: a high recurring rate on a product with high churn and heavy support, where every referred member costs you time. Recurring at a lower rate is usually the safer default for memberships.
The affiliate brief that gets partners promoting
Partners promote what is easy to promote. A one-page brief turns "I will share it sometime" into a post this week. Copy this template and fill in each bracket:
AFFILIATE BRIEF: [Product name] Who it is for: [one sentence on the buyer and their problem] What it does: [one sentence on the result, no hype] Price and commission: [price], you earn [rate] [one-time / every renewal] Cookie and payout: [cookie length], paid [schedule] after the platform hold Three angles that work: 1. [The before and after the buyer gets] 2. [The mistake it fixes] 3. [Who should NOT buy it, so the right people do] Assets: [link to screenshots, demo video, sample pages, swipe captions] Your link: [affiliate link], works with discount code [code] if you have one Rules: no paid ads on the brand name, no income claims, disclose the link Contact: [email or chat] for questions or a custom code
The third angle, who should not buy, does more work than it looks. It lets partners recommend you honestly, which is what their audience trusts, and it cuts refunds from buyers who were never a fit. Keep the rules short and enforceable: no bidding on your brand name in ads, clear disclosure of affiliate links, and no earnings promises on your behalf.
Finding the first partners
- 01Rate set
From your net and the new-buyer test
- 02Shortlist
Ten people whose audience fits, not the biggest
- 03Personal invite
Free access plus the brief
- 04Launch window
Give them a date to post around
- 05Review
Keep the partners who send real buyers
Start with customers who already got results, then creators adjacent to your topic who do not sell a competing product. Give each one free access so they can speak from use, and a date to aim for, such as a launch or a price change. Email works better than a public sign-up page for the first ten; our guide to email lists for digital products covers the launch emails partners can mirror.
Affiliates are one lever. If you want the full system around them, from the product and the sales page to launch emails and partner outreach, our Digital Products program covers each stage.
Troubleshooting affiliate tracking
- A partner says the sale was not credited. Check whether the buyer clicked another partner's link later (most recent click wins on Gumroad), or bought after the cookie expired.
- Sales from your own site are not tracked. On Lemon Squeezy, add the affiliate tracking script to pages that link to checkout.
- Discount codes and links clash. Gumroad documents how to combine an affiliate ID with a discount code in one URL; use that format instead of two separate links.
- Commission seems late. Remember the holds: Whop and Lemon Squeezy both hold commissions for 30 days before paying.
Affiliate programs for digital products: FAQ
How do I start an affiliate program for digital products?
Use the affiliate feature built into the platform you already sell on. Gumroad, Whop and Lemon Squeezy all track referral links and pay commissions for you. Decide the commission from your margins first, turn the program on, write a one-page affiliate brief with angles and assets, then invite a small group of people whose audience already trusts them on your topic.
What commission should I pay affiliates on a digital product?
Work it out from what you keep, not from what others pay. On a one-time product with no delivery cost, 30% to 50% is common because each extra sale costs you little. Pay more only if affiliates bring buyers you would not reach yourself. On subscriptions, a recurring commission at a lower rate usually costs you less per buyer than a large first-payment-only cut.
How do Gumroad affiliates work?
Under Your Affiliates you add people with a Gumroad account, pick products and set a commission between 1% and 75% of the sale. Their link sets a 30-day cookie, and fees are split in proportion to the commission. Gumroad also runs Gumroad Affiliates, where anyone can promote your products for a fixed 10% with a 7-day cookie; you can opt out. Checked October 2026.
How does the Whop affiliate program work?
In your Whop dashboard, open Marketing, then Affiliates. You set a global affiliate rate (the default is 30%) for anyone who refers buyers, an optional member affiliate rate for existing members, and custom rates per user as a percent or fixed amount, paid on the first payment or every recurring payment. Whop holds commissions for 30 days before paying. Checked October 2026.
Do affiliates keep earning on subscription renewals?
It depends on the platform and your settings. On Gumroad, affiliates who refer a membership customer earn on every recurring charge while the customer stays subscribed. On Whop, custom affiliate deals can be set to recurring payments or first payment only. Decide this before you launch, because changing it later affects partners who already promoted you.
What happens to the commission when a buyer refunds?
Check your platform rules before you set a rate. Gumroad refunds the full amount to the customer and deducts the affiliate commission share from their Gumroad balance. Lemon Squeezy holds referral commissions for 30 days before they become available, and Whop has a 30-day waiting period, which gives refunds time to land before partners are paid.
