The best digital products to sell on Amazon are the ones Amazon has a program for: Kindle ebooks, low-content and activity paperbacks, audiobooks through ACX or KDP's virtual voice beta, and designs for Merch on Demand. Third-party sellers cannot sell downloads such as printables, templates or software, so sell those elsewhere and use Amazon for the book or printed version.
The best digital products to sell on Amazon are Kindle ebooks, low-content books such as planners and journals, audiobooks, and designs for Merch on Demand, because those are the formats Amazon has a program to sell. Downloads such as printable PDFs, templates and software are not on the menu for independent sellers, so the smart move is to sell the book or printed version on Amazon and the download somewhere else.
Program rules and royalty rates checked in October 2026 against the KDP eBook list price page, KDP paperback royalty page, KDP low-content books page, ACX's royalty model announcement and Merch on Demand. Amazon changes these programs often; reread the linked pages before you price anything.
Most lists of "digital products to sell on Amazon" are really KDP lists, or they mix in products Amazon will not let you list. This one decodes the whole Amazon menu: what each program sells, what it pays, what is closed, and which of them deserve your time compared with a simple KDP-only focus. If you have not picked a product yet, start with our guide to creating a digital product, then come back to choose the Amazon format.
The best digital products to sell on Amazon, with examples
Each example below fits an Amazon program that exists today. The "why it works" column is the part to copy: every one of them matches how shoppers already search Amazon.
| Product | Amazon route | Why it works | How to adapt it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Narrow how-to ebook | Kindle ebook (KDP) | Readers search Amazon for a specific problem; a short book that solves one problem matches the search exactly | Turn your best guide or course module into a 15,000 to 30,000 word book with one outcome in the title |
| Niche planner | Low-content paperback | Fill-in interiors are fast to produce and Amazon prints and ships each copy | Pick a buyer you already serve (teachers, gardeners, freelancers) and design pages for their routine |
| Log book or tracker | Low-content paperback | Repetitive pages for a hobby or job are a practical purchase, not an impulse buy | Build one clean interior, then make variants for adjacent activities |
| Workbook companion | Paperback (not low-content) | Exercises plus teaching pages give buyers more than blank space | Pair it with your ebook so the listing offers both formats |
| Audiobook of your ebook | ACX or KDP virtual voice | Same manuscript, new format, new set of listeners on Audible and Amazon | Start with the ebook that already sells; audio rarely rescues one that does not |
| Puzzle or coloring book | Paperback (not low-content) | Gift and activity buyers browse these categories on Amazon | Only worth it if you can create original puzzles or art, not reskins |
| Apparel design | Merch on Demand | Amazon prints, ships and handles service; you supply the design | Design for a community you understand, using words and art you own |
| Kids picture book | Kindle ebook and paperback | Parents shop for books on Amazon, and KDP supports both formats | Expect longer production; illustrations and layout are the real work |
Notice what is missing: Notion templates, Canva templates, Lightroom presets, spreadsheets, stock files and online courses. They are strong digital products, just not on Amazon. Our comparison of where to sell digital products covers the platforms built for those.
Can you sell digital products on Amazon?
Yes, but only through Amazon's own publishing and print programs, not through a normal seller account. Seller Central is built for physical goods. Its software selling policy says sellers may not sell digitally downloadable software by any means, including activation codes, download links or license keys sent by email or message (checked October 2026). We found no Amazon program that lets an independent seller list a PDF, template or other file for instant download.
That leaves four doors, each with its own account and rules:
- 01Kindle Direct Publishing
Ebooks, paperbacks, hardcovers and low-content books.
- 02ACX
Narrated audiobooks distributed to Audible, Amazon and Apple Books.
- 03Virtual voice (KDP beta)
AI-narrated audiobooks from eligible KDP ebooks, invite only.
- 04Merch on Demand
Your designs printed on products Amazon makes and ships.
Seller Central does not offer digital delivery for third-party sellers.
| Format | Program | What you earn (checked October 2026) | Who buys it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle ebook | KDP | 35% or 70% royalty; 70% band is $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com since July 7, 2026, minus delivery costs | Readers who search Kindle and Kindle Unlimited |
| Paperback and hardcover | KDP print on demand | Paperback: 50% or 60% of list price (60% at $9.99 and above on Amazon.com) minus printing cost | Book buyers, gift buyers, planner and journal buyers |
| Low-content book | KDP (low-content box ticked) | Same print royalty; no ISBN required; no Expanded Distribution | Planner, journal and log book shoppers |
| Audiobook (narrated) | ACX | 50% exclusive or 30% non-exclusive under Audible's new royalty model | Audible and Amazon listeners |
| Audiobook (virtual voice) | KDP beta, invite only | 40% during the beta, US distribution only | Listeners of eligible KDP ebooks |
| Apparel and print designs | Merch on Demand | Royalty per item sold; Amazon handles production, shipping and service | Amazon shoppers browsing gifts and fandom products |
Kindle ebooks: still the main event
A Kindle ebook is the only purely digital product a creator can sell directly to Amazon shoppers, which is why it stays at the top of any honest list. KDP offers two royalty options. On Amazon.com the 70% option now covers list prices from $2.99 to $12.99; KDP raised the ceiling from $9.99 effective July 7, 2026, according to its list price requirements page (checked October 2026). Delivery costs based on file size come off the 70% royalty, so image-heavy books earn less per sale. Outside that band, or in territories outside the 70% list, you earn 35%.
The new ceiling matters for nonfiction. A practical guide that used to be squeezed under $9.99 to keep the higher rate now has room to price as a premium reference. KDP Select is the other lever: enroll an ebook and it becomes eligible for Kindle Unlimited, but for each 90-day term the ebook can only be distributed through KDP, per KDP's KDP Select enrollment page. Print and audio editions can still be sold elsewhere.
- A broad overview of a big topic
- A repackaged blog with no new structure
- AI-written text published without disclosure
- A title that does not say what problem it solves
- One problem, one outcome, for one reader
- Built from a guide or course you already teach
- Original work, with AI use disclosed where required
- A title that matches what readers type into Amazon
On AI: KDP's content guidelines require you to disclose AI-generated text, images or translations, including covers and interior art, even after heavy editing. Work you wrote yourself and only refined with AI tools counts as AI-assisted and does not need disclosure (checked October 2026).
Can you sell printables on Amazon?
Not as files. You can sell them as printed books. KDP's low-content books page lists notebooks, planners, diaries and journals, prompt journals, log books, coupon books, score card templates, crafting templates and blank sheet music as typical low-content books. Puzzle books, coloring books and children's books are not low-content; they go through the normal print setup.
Low-content books come with trade-offs worth knowing before you design a single page:
- Tick the Low-content box under Categories, or the book is rejected
- No ISBN required, but low-content books cannot use a free KDP ISBN
- Not eligible for Expanded Distribution, whatever the ISBN choice
- Not eligible for series pages
- Without your own ISBN there is no Look Inside sample; A+ Content images can show the interior instead
- The ISBN choice cannot be changed after publishing without unpublishing
Paperbacks pay a royalty rate minus the printing cost. KDP's paperback royalty page now uses two rates on Amazon marketplaces: 50% for list prices at or below $9.98 on Amazon.com, and 60% at $9.99 and above. KDP's own worked example is a $15 list price on a 333-page black ink paperback: 0.60 x $15 minus a $5.00 printing cost leaves $4.00. A short planner costs less to print; KDP's printing cost page lists a fixed $2.30 for regular-trim black ink paperbacks of 24 to 110 pages on Amazon.com, while color interiors cost more. Run every planner idea through those numbers before you design it.
Our printables business guide covers the download side, and the Etsy selling guide walks through listing the PDF version.
What are the Amazon alternatives to KDP?
Inside Amazon, the alternatives to KDP are audio and merchandise. Outside the audio and design programs, everything digital on Amazon routes back through KDP.
Audiobooks through ACX
ACX is Amazon's audiobook exchange. Under Audible's new royalty model, opened to all ACX creators on May 26, 2026, you choose exclusive distribution to Audible, Amazon and Apple Books for a 50% royalty, or non-exclusive distribution for 30%, according to ACX's announcement (checked October 2026). The legacy model is being discontinued by the end of 2026. You narrate it yourself, hire a narrator, or share royalties with one. It suits ebooks that already sell; the audio edition widens reach for a proven book more than it rescues a quiet one.
Audiobooks with virtual voice
KDP also runs an invite-only beta that turns eligible ebooks into AI-narrated audiobooks. KDP's eligibility page requires a live, reflowable ebook with a table of contents, in English, Spanish, Italian or French, and excludes public domain content. KDP's audiobook royalties page says the beta pays 40% on sales and is limited to US distribution for now (checked October 2026). If the option appears on your Bookshelf, it is a low-effort way to test whether a title has audio demand.
Merch on Demand
Merch on Demand takes your design and sells it on products Amazon produces. Per the Merch on Demand site, Amazon creates the product page, handles production, shipping and customer service with no upfront cost, and pays you a royalty on every product sold (checked October 2026). Your input is purely digital: artwork. The risk is rights. Slogans, characters and brand references you do not own are the fastest way to lose a listing, so design for a community you understand with words and art that are yours.
Doors that are closed in 2026
Several Amazon routes that older articles still recommend no longer exist or no longer reach most buyers:
- Feb 26, 2025Kindle Vella wound down
Kindle Vella episodes and stories are no longer for sale on Amazon.com.
- Aug 20, 2025Amazon Appstore on Android discontinued
Amazon discontinued the Appstore on Android devices; it remains available on Fire TV and Fire tablets.
- OngoingNo downloads in Seller Central
Third-party sellers may not sell downloadable software, keys or download links.

Which Amazon products deserve your time
From building digital product catalogs across platforms, our verdict is simple: Amazon rewards books and punishes everything that is not a book. Here is how the options sort by effort and by how much of the sale you control.
- Start with KDP only if you have expertise that fits a book. A nonfiction ebook with a paperback edition is the highest-value Amazon product for most creators.
- Add low-content books if you already sell printables or planners elsewhere; the design work is mostly done.
- Add audio once an ebook sells steadily; ACX or virtual voice extends a proven title.
- Treat Merch on Demand as a side line unless you are a designer with a defined audience.
- Skip Amazon for templates, presets, courses and software. Sell them where downloads are allowed.
Whatever you publish, price it with the full cost picture. Our guide to pricing a digital product applies to ebooks too, and it pairs well with the KDP royalty rules above.
Build your own Amazon product in six steps
- 1Pick the buyer and the search
Write the exact phrase your reader would type into Amazon. That phrase shapes the title.
- 2Choose the program
Ebook or print through KDP, audio through ACX, designs through Merch on Demand.
- 3Run the royalty math
Check the price band, delivery or printing cost and the royalty rate before you build.
- 4Make the product and the cover
Disclose AI-generated text or images in KDP setup if you used them.
- 5Publish and order a proof
For print books, check the physical copy before you promote it.
- 6Pair it with a direct sale
Sell the downloadable version, workbook or course on your own store and point readers to it.
Amazon is one channel in a catalog, not the whole business. Our Digital Products program covers how to research, build, price and sell a product line across the platforms that fit each format, including where Amazon belongs in it.
Mistakes that sink Amazon digital products
- Listing a download in Seller Central. It breaks Amazon's policy and puts the selling account at risk.
- Pricing a paperback without checking printing cost. A color interior can eat most of the royalty.
- Copying trending low-content interiors. Identical planners compete only on price.
- Skipping AI disclosure. KDP asks the question during setup; answer it accurately.
- Using trademarks on merch. Phrases and characters you do not own get listings removed.
- Relying on Amazon alone. Build an email list through your own store or a free download so you can reach readers directly when the next book ships.
Digital products on Amazon: FAQ
What are the best digital products to sell on Amazon?
The digital products Amazon actually supports are Kindle ebooks through KDP, audiobooks through ACX or KDP's virtual voice beta, and design files that Amazon turns into physical goods: low-content paperbacks such as planners and journals, and apparel designs through Merch on Demand. Nonfiction ebooks that solve one narrow problem and niche planners are usually the best starting points because they are cheap to make and easy to search for.
Can you sell digital downloads on Amazon?
Not as a third-party seller. Amazon's Seller Central software policy says sellers may not sell digitally downloadable software by any means, including license keys or download links, and we found no Amazon program that lets an independent seller list a PDF or template for instant download (checked October 2026). The approved routes for digital work are KDP for ebooks and print books, ACX for audiobooks, and Merch on Demand for designs.
Can I sell printables on Amazon?
You cannot sell a printable as a download, but you can sell it printed. KDP's low-content category covers notebooks, planners, journals, log books and similar fill-in interiors, and Amazon prints each copy on demand. Low-content books do not need an ISBN, but they are not eligible for Expanded Distribution or series pages. Keep selling the downloadable PDF version on Etsy or your own store.
How much does Amazon pay for Kindle ebooks?
KDP offers a 35% or a 70% royalty option. Since July 7, 2026, the 70% option covers list prices from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com, up from the old $9.99 ceiling, and delivery costs based on file size are subtracted. Books priced outside that band, or sold in territories outside the 70% list, earn 35%. These figures come from KDP's help pages, checked October 2026.
Is Amazon KDP worth it compared with Etsy or Gumroad?
KDP is worth it for books, because Amazon is where readers search for books and Amazon handles printing, delivery and payments. It is the wrong channel for templates, presets, courses and other downloads, which Amazon does not sell for third parties. Most creators do best running KDP for the book version of an idea and a digital storefront for the downloadable version.
Do I have to disclose AI content on Amazon KDP?
Yes, if the content is AI-generated. KDP's content guidelines require you to tell Amazon when text, images or translations were created by an AI tool, including cover and interior art, even if you edited them heavily afterwards. Content you wrote yourself and only refined with AI tools counts as AI-assisted, which you do not have to disclose. You remain responsible for rights in either case.
