On the same $25 Etsy listing, a digital planner keeps $22.17 after fees and a print-on-demand shirt keeps $5.30 to $9.78 after production, shipping and fees. Print on demand suits artwork people want as an object and prices of $30 or more; digital suits templates, planners and guides, where the work is done once. Six questions at the end sort you into one or the other.
Print on demand vs digital products is a difference in cost per sale: on the same $25 Etsy listing, a print-on-demand shirt keeps $5.30 to $9.78 after production, shipping and fees, and a digital planner keeps $22.17. Pick print on demand when the buyer wants an object and will pay $30 or more for it. Pick digital when your product is a file that does a job, because nothing has to be made, shipped or replaced.
Checked on 11 October 2026 against Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and Etsy Help on payment processing fees, production partners, return policies on listings and downloading a digital item; Printful's Bella + Canvas 3001 catalogue page, shipping rates and return policy; and Printify pricing. Every dollar figure is arithmetic on those published rates at a stated example price. None of it is sales data.
Most comparisons of these two models are written by a company that sells one of them. This one puts the same price through both and shows the working. If you already lean digital and want to know what to make, our ranked list of the best digital products to sell rates 87 of them on demand, effort and margin.
Print on demand vs digital products: the short verdict
Neither model is better in general. They fit different products and different sellers, and the split is cleaner than most advice suggests.
- Your product is artwork or a phrase people want to wear, hang or gift
- You can price at $30 or more and still sell
- You would rather upload a design than build a full product
- You accept paying for the occasional wrong-size order
- Your product does a job: plans, tracks, teaches or saves setup time
- You want to keep most of a price under $30
- You are willing to do more work before the first sale
- You can answer download and file questions from buyers
| Print on demand | Digital products | |
|---|---|---|
| What the buyer gets | A printed object, shipped to them | A file, downloaded |
| Your cost per sale | Product and shipping: $16.87 on the example shirt | Nothing beyond marketplace fees |
| Kept from a $25 Etsy sale | $5.30 with free shipping; $9.78 if the buyer pays $4.95 shipping | $22.17 |
| Time to the buyer | 5 to 9 business days in the US (2 to 5 to make, 3 to 4 to ship) | Minutes: available once payment is confirmed |
| Returns | The provider covers misprints, damage and lost parcels; wrong size and change of mind are yours | Not returnable on Etsy; you still fix broken or wrong files |
| Work before the first sale | A design and a mockup per product | The whole product: research, build, test, instructions |
| What caps growth | Margin per order, and the price buyers accept for a shirt | Demand for the listing, copying and support messages |
| Etsy rule to know | Disclose the production partner on the listing | No return or exchange policy can be set on a digital listing |
POD vs digital products on the same $25 sale
At $25, the digital product keeps more than twice what the shirt keeps in its best case, and about four times what it keeps with free shipping. The inputs are deliberately plain, so you can swap in your own:
- The price: $25 for both, an illustrative input. One is a printed t-shirt, the other a digital planner.
- The marketplace: a US Etsy shop on Etsy Payments. Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus any shipping you charge, and 3% plus $0.25 for payment processing.
- The shirt: a Bella + Canvas 3001 unisex tee from Printful, which starts at $11.92 on its catalogue page, plus $4.95 standard shipping to a US address.
- The planner: a PDF with no cost per copy. The hours spent building it are real, and they are covered further down.
| POD shirt, buyer pays shipping | POD shirt, free shipping | Digital planner | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays | $29.95 ($25 + $4.95 shipping) | $25.00 | $25.00 |
| Etsy listing fee | $0.20 | $0.20 | $0.20 |
| Etsy transaction fee, 6.5% | $1.95 | $1.63 | $1.63 |
| Etsy payment processing, 3% + $0.25 | $1.15 | $1.00 | $1.00 |
| Printful product, Bella + Canvas 3001 | $11.92 | $11.92 | $0 |
| Printful US shipping, first shirt | $4.95 | $4.95 | $0 |
| You keep | $9.78 | $5.30 | $22.17 |
| Share of the $25 price kept | 39.1% | 21.2% | 88.7% |
| If the sale came through Offsite Ads at 15% | $5.29 | $1.55 | $18.42 |
| Sales needed to keep $500 | 52 | 95 | 23 |
$25 is an illustrative price. US Etsy shop, one item per order, before tax, no Offsite Ads. Source: Arithmetic on Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and Printful's catalogue and shipping pages, checked 11 October 2026
Two rows deserve a second look. Charging shipping separately keeps more per order, but Etsy takes its 6.5% and 3% on the shipping too, so $0.47 of the $4.95 never reaches you. And an Offsite Ads sale almost wipes out the free-shipping shirt: $1.55 kept on a $25 order.
You can recheck the digital column in our free Etsy profit margin calculator by entering $25. It carries half-cents, so it can differ from this table by one cent. For the shirt, subtract the provider's product and shipping charges from the result, since the calculator is built for files with no cost of goods.
Print on demand: what each order costs, and where it is strong
A print-on-demand order has a cost of goods on every sale, and at ordinary shirt prices it is the largest line. On the $29.95 order above, more than half goes to the provider before Etsy takes anything.
- Printful product$11.92
- You keep$9.78
- Printful shipping$4.95
- Etsy fees$3.30

The prices behind that, as published in October 2026:
- Printful product price: from $11.92 for the Bella + Canvas 3001. It is a starting price, and taxes and shipping are extra.
- Printful US shipping, shirts: $4.95 for a single product and $2.20 for each additional one in the same order.
- Printify: the Free plan costs $0. Premium is listed from $39 a month, or from $24.99 a month billed yearly, with up to 33% off new products. Its pricing page shows a fulfilment cost of $8.77 for its example unisex tee, before shipping. Shipping depends on the print provider you choose.
Where print on demand is strong. The buyer gets a real object, which is what a gift buyer wants. A design takes hours, not weeks, so you can test many ideas cheaply. And a printed shirt cannot be reshared the way a PDF can, although the design itself can still be imitated.
Where it is limited. The price has to carry about $17 of cost before fees. To keep the same $22.17 the planner keeps, a free-shipping shirt would have to sell for $43.64. That is a hard price for a slogan tee, which is why the model depends on volume and on designs strong enough to hold $30 and up.
Digital products: where the margin comes from, and what it hides
A digital product keeps most of its price because the same file is sold again and again with nothing to make. On Etsy the fee stack is 9.5% of the price plus $0.45 for a US shop, which is $2.83 on $25. Our Etsy digital product profit margins breakdown runs the same stack at five prices.
The margin hides the work. A planner that someone pays $25 for needs research into what buyers ask for, a structure that holds up in use, tested links or print sizes, and instructions. That is days or weeks before the first sale, against an evening for a shirt design. Three more costs sit outside the fee table:
- Support. Buyers ask where the download is, why the file will not open on a phone and how to print at a different size.
- Copying. Files get reshared and relisted. Plan for it with a clear license and a takedown routine; our guide to DMCA takedowns on Etsy covers the process.
- Competition. A category with no production cost fills up fast, so a generic planner competes on price. A specific one, for one job and one buyer, does not have to.
If printables are where you would start, how to sell printables on Etsy walks from file setup to the first sale.
Returns and delivery time: who carries the risk
With print on demand, the provider carries the risk of its own mistakes and you carry the rest. With digital, almost nothing can go wrong in transit, because there is none.
- Minute 0The order is paid on Etsy
Both models start here.
- Minutes laterDigital: the buyer downloads the file
Etsy makes an instant download available once payment is confirmed. Your work on this order is finished unless the buyer needs help.
- Business days 2 to 5Print on demand: the shirt is made
Printful quotes 2 to 5 business days to create a product and fulfil an order.
- Business days 5 to 9Print on demand: the parcel arrives
Standard US shipping adds 3 to 4 business days after fulfilment. International orders take longer.
- 30 days after deliveryPrint on demand: the claim window closes
Misprints, damage and lost parcels must be reported to Printful within 30 days of delivery.
Source: Etsy Help and Printful shipping and return pages, checked October 2026
Printful's policy is specific about what it covers. Damaged, defective or misprinted orders and parcels lost in transit get a free reshipment or a refund, with a photo and no need to send the item back. A wrong size, a wrong colour or a change of mind gets neither.
That last group is the cost to plan for, because size is the one thing a buyer cannot check before a made-to-order shirt arrives. If you replace such an order yourself, it costs another $16.87. As an illustration, replacing one order in twenty takes $0.84 off every sale, which brings the $9.78 shirt down to $8.94. The other option is a shop policy that refuses size exchanges, which protects the margin and costs you some reviews.
Digital has its own version. Etsy does not let sellers set a return or exchange policy on digital listings, and buyers see that digital items cannot be returned. You still fix real problems, such as a broken file or the wrong version. Our Etsy shop policies for digital downloads has wording for that.
Etsy print on demand vs digital downloads: the rules for each
Etsy allows both, with one disclosure rule for print on demand and one settings difference for digital. Neither is hard to meet.
- Print on demand. Etsy calls the print company a production partner: a business outside your shop that helps physically make items from your own designs. You disclose the partner on each listing it makes. The design must be yours; reselling ready-made products you did not design is not allowed.
- Digital downloads. The listing is created as a digital item with its files attached, and the buyer gets a download once payment is confirmed. No return or exchange policy can be set on it.
- Fees. The fee schedule is the same for both. The only difference is that a physical order adds shipping to the amount Etsy charges its percentages on.
How each model scales
Both models let you do the creative work once. They differ in what every additional sale costs, and that decides how growth feels.
Take an illustrative month of 100 sales at $25. The digital shop keeps $2,217. The print-on-demand shop, charging shipping, collects $2,995, pays Printful $1,687 and Etsy $330, and keeps $978. Ten times the volume gives ten times each figure: the shirt's share of the price does not improve as you grow unless you raise the price or negotiate a cheaper product, for example through a paid provider plan.
Digital growth runs into a different wall. The cost per sale stays flat, but each listing has a demand ceiling, so shops grow by adding products and by bringing their own traffic. Support messages grow with sales as well, so write the instructions page early.
Should I sell print on demand or digital? Six questions
Answer these in order. If the first two point the same way, you can usually stop there.
- 1Does the buyer want an object or a result?
Something to wear, hang or wrap: print on demand. A plan made, a budget tracked, a task shortened: digital.
- 2Can your price carry about $17 of cost per order?
If you can sell at $30 or more, print on demand works. Under that, a file keeps far more of the price.
- 3Is your skill artwork or systems?
Illustration, lettering and slogans suit a printed product. Layouts, spreadsheets and step-by-step knowledge suit a file.
- 4Will you pay for wrong-size orders?
The provider covers its own errors only. If that risk bothers you, choose digital or sell items without sizes, such as posters and mugs.
- 5Will you answer file-help messages?
Digital buyers ask about downloads, apps and printing. If you would rather not do that support, print on demand has less of it.
- 6How fast does the buyer need it?
A gift needed this week cannot wait 5 to 9 business days. A printable or a digital gift arrives in minutes.
If you land on digital, the next decision is which product, and that is a validation problem before it is a design problem. Our Digital Products program starts there, with finding a problem buyers already pay to solve and checking it against live competitors before you build anything.
Alternatives: sell both, or leave the marketplace
You do not have to choose once and for all. Two alternatives are worth knowing.
- One design, two listings. Wall art is the clean case: a printable file for buyers who print at home, and a finished print-on-demand poster for buyers who want it delivered. The artwork is done once, and each listing reaches a different buyer.
- Your own storefront. Etsy's fees are the same in both columns above, so moving off Etsy changes both models equally. It matters more for digital, where fees are the only cost. Our platform fees comparison prices eight options at three price points.
What this comparison leaves out
Catalogue prices and fee schedules change without notice. Treat each linked page as the source of record and this table as a dated reading of them.
Print on demand vs digital products: FAQ
Is print on demand or digital products more profitable?
Per sale, digital products. On a $25 Etsy listing, a digital planner keeps $22.17 after Etsy's fees, while a print-on-demand shirt made by Printful keeps $5.30 with free shipping or $9.78 if the buyer pays $4.95 shipping. Those figures are arithmetic on published fees and catalogue prices, checked October 2026. Profit for a whole shop depends on how many sales each product gets, which no fee table can tell you.
Should I sell print on demand or digital products as a beginner?
Start with digital if your skill is organizing information, writing or building templates, and with print on demand if your skill is artwork or slogans that people want to wear or hang. Digital asks for more work before the first sale and almost none per order. Print on demand asks for less upfront, and production, shipping and fees take roughly 60% to 80% of a $25 price.
Can I sell print on demand and digital downloads in the same Etsy shop?
Yes. Etsy lets one shop hold physical and digital listings side by side. A print-on-demand listing has to disclose the production partner that makes the item, and a digital listing is set up as a digital item with its files attached. Many shops sell the same artwork both ways: a printable file for buyers who print at home and a finished print for buyers who want it delivered.
Who pays for returns on print on demand?
It depends on the reason. Printful says it reships or refunds orders that arrive damaged, defective or misprinted, or that are lost in transit, if you report them within 30 days of delivery. It does not accept returns or exchanges for a wrong size, a wrong colour or a change of mind, so any refund or replacement you offer in those cases comes out of your own margin.
How long does a print-on-demand order take compared with a digital download?
A digital download is available to the buyer once Etsy confirms the payment, usually within minutes. A print-on-demand order has to be made and shipped: Printful quotes 2 to 5 business days to create a product and fulfil the order, then 3 to 4 business days for standard US shipping. That is 5 to 9 business days, and longer for international buyers.
Does Etsy allow print on demand?
Yes, when the design is yours. Etsy treats a print-on-demand company as a production partner: a business outside your shop that helps physically make items from your own designs. You have to disclose the production partner on the listings it makes. Using a partner to resell ready-made products you did not design is not allowed. Checked against Etsy Help in October 2026.
What does a print-on-demand t-shirt cost to make?
On Printful's catalogue, the Bella + Canvas 3001 unisex t-shirt starts at $11.92, and standard shipping to a US address is $4.95 for the first shirt and $2.20 for each additional one, so one order costs you $16.87 before marketplace fees. Printify's pricing page shows a fulfilment cost of $8.77 for its example unisex tee, before shipping. Checked October 2026.
The margin favours a file. The hard part is which file.
