To make a coloring book for Amazon KDP, lay out at least 24 pages of line art as a single-page PDF at 8.5 by 11 inches, build a wraparound PDF cover, and publish it as a regular paperback with an ISBN, not as a low-content book. Declare any AI-generated art, including the cover, and price at $9.99 or more on Amazon.com to get the 60% royalty rate.
To make a coloring book for Amazon KDP, lay out at least 24 pages of line art as a single-page PDF at your trim size, usually 8.5 by 11 inches, build a one-piece PDF cover with back, spine and front, and upload both as a paperback with black ink on white paper. KDP prints each copy on demand and pays you 60% of the list price at $9.99 and above on Amazon.com, or 50% below that, minus the print cost.
Specs and rules checked October 2026 against KDP's help pages: trim size, bleed and margins, paperback submission guidelines, creating a paperback cover, print options, printing cost, paperback royalty, low-content books, creating a book and the content guidelines. Prices are for Amazon.com in US dollars. Royalty examples are our arithmetic on KDP's published formula.
By the end of this tutorial you will have a print-ready interior PDF, a cover PDF sized to your page count, a correct answer to KDP's AI question, and a list price in the right royalty band. This is one product type among many; our guide to creating a digital product covers the wider build process if you are still choosing what to make.
What you need before you start
Nothing here costs money except, optionally, the tool you draw or generate with. KDP charges no upfront fee; it takes the print cost out of each sale.
- A KDP account
- A niche and a page count decided before you draw
- At least 24 pages of line art you have the rights to publish
- Every page at 300 DPI or higher, in pure black on white
- A layout tool that exports a PDF at a custom page size
- A decision on bleed: art to the page edge, or a white border
- A front cover image at 300 DPI
- A written record of which pages or images an AI tool created
If the niche is still open, settle it first. Page count, line weight and even the trim size follow from who the book is for, and our breakdown of coloring page niches gives the spec for each buyer group.
How to make a coloring book for Amazon KDP: the eight steps
- 1Fix the niche and the count
At least 24 pages. Fifty single-sided designs come to about 104.
- 2Set up the page
8.5 x 11 in trim. Build the file at 8.625 x 11.25 in if any art touches the edge.
- 3Make the line art
300 DPI or more, lines of 0.75 pt or thicker, closed shapes, no stray grey.
- 4Lay out the interior
One design per page on the right-hand side, backs blank or lightly patterned.
- 5Export the interior PDF
Single pages, fonts embedded, layers flattened, no crop marks, under 650MB.
- 6Build the cover
One PDF with back, spine and front, plus 0.125 in of bleed on every side.
- 7Complete title setup
Paperback, not low-content, ISBN assigned, AI question answered, files previewed.
- 8Price, proof and publish
List at $9.99 or more for the 60% rate, order a proof, then submit.
The rest of this page takes those steps in order, with the expected result after each one.
Coloring book interior for KDP: the spec sheet
Steps 2 to 5 are all about one file. Build it to the numbers below and it passes KDP's checks the first time.
| Spec | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Trim size | 8.5 x 11 in, the usual coloring book size | 24 to 590 pages with black ink on white paper |
| Minimum page count | 24 pages | Odd counts are rounded up to an even number |
| File size with bleed | 8.625 x 11.25 in | Add 0.125 in to the top, bottom and outside edge |
| Outside margins | 0.25 in without bleed, 0.375 in with bleed | Keep anything that must survive trimming inside this |
| Inside (gutter) margin | 0.375 in for 24 to 150 pages | 0.5 in for 151 to 300 pages |
| Image resolution | 300 DPI minimum | 2550 x 3300 px for a full 8.5 x 11 in page; KDP suggests 600 DPI at most |
| Line thickness | 0.75 pt (0.01 in) minimum | Thinner lines may not print |
| Grey fills | 10% minimum recommended | Lighter greys can vanish on black-ink interiors |
| Page format | Single pages, not spreads | One design per PDF page |
| Blank pages | No more than 4 in a row at the start or middle, 10 at the end | Alternating blank backs are within the rule |
| File | PDF, 650MB or less | Fonts embedded, layers flattened, no crop marks |
Step 2: set up the page
Choose bleed or no bleed before you place a single image, because KDP applies it to the whole file: if one page needs bleed, every page is sized for it. Bleed means the art extends 0.125 inches past the trim line on the top, bottom and outside edge, so an 8.5 by 11 inch book becomes an 8.625 by 11.25 inch file. A bleed interior must be uploaded as a PDF.
Expected result: a blank document at the right size with margin guides at 0.375 inches all round. That one number covers the outside margin for bleed files and the gutter for books up to 150 pages.
Step 3: make the line art
Each page needs 2550 by 3300 pixels to fill 8.5 by 11 inches at 300 DPI. Keep outlines at 0.75 point or thicker, close every shape so it can be colored in, and remove grey shading, which prints as a dirty tint on a black-ink interior. Draw by hand, on a tablet, or start from an AI generator. If you generate, our AI coloring pages tutorial covers the conversion from generated image to clean line art, and the AI tools for digital products guide covers tool costs. Note the disclosure rule further down this page.
Expected result: a folder of numbered PNG or vector files, one per design, that look clean when printed on a home printer at full size.
Step 4: lay out the interior
Put each design on a right-hand page and leave its back blank, or fill the back with a light pattern. KDP's black-ink paper is 50 to 61 pound stock, which markers can soak through, so single-sided layout protects the next design. Premium color paper is heavier at 60 to 71 pounds, but a 104-page large-trim book would cost $9.32 to print instead of $2.84, so black ink on white paper is the workable choice. Add a title page, a copyright line and a color-test page at the front.
Expected result: an even page count of 24 or more, with no run of more than four blank pages.
Step 5: export the interior PDF
Export single pages, not spreads. Embed fonts, flatten transparent layers, and switch off crop marks, bookmarks and comments. KDP names all of these among its common points of failure, along with file names that contain emoji.
- 01Line art files
One per design, 300 DPI.
- 02Page layout
Trim, bleed and margins set once.
- 03Interior PDF
Single pages, flattened.
- 04Cover PDF
Sized from the page count.
- 05KDP Previewer
Required before you can submit.
- 06Proof copy
Optional, and worth it.
Step 6: build the cover from the page count
The cover is one PDF that wraps the book: back cover on the left, spine in the middle, front cover on the right. Its width depends on the spine, and the spine depends on your final page count, so finish the interior first.
- Spine width. For white paper, multiply the page count by 0.002252 inches. A 104-page book has a 0.234 inch spine.
- Cover size. Width is bleed plus back plus spine plus front plus bleed: 0.125 + 8.5 + 0.234 + 8.5 + 0.125 = 17.484 inches. Height is 11 plus 0.25 inches of bleed, or 11.25 inches.
- Spine text. KDP only prints spine text on books with at least 79 pages, or 80 if you use Cover Creator. A cover with spine text on a shorter book is rejected.
- Safe zones. Keep text at least 0.125 inches inside the trim lines and leave the barcode area on the back cover clear. KDP adds the barcode if you do not.
- Matching details. The title and author name on the cover must match what you type into title setup exactly.
Expected result: a flattened PDF at 300 DPI, under KDP's recommended 40MB, with a glossy or matte finish in mind. KDP's cover calculator, linked from its cover page, generates a template for your exact trim size and page count.
The 2026 AI disclosure decision
KDP asks one question that decides whether your book is declared as AI-generated, and the answer depends on what made the art, not on how much you edited it. The content guidelines require you to inform KDP of AI-generated text, images or translations when you publish a new book or edit and republish an existing one, and they state that AI-generated images "include cover and interior images and artwork".
| How the content was made | KDP category | Disclose? |
|---|---|---|
| You drew every page yourself, on paper or a tablet | Neither | No |
| You drew the pages, then used an AI tool to refine or error-check them | AI-assisted | No |
| You used AI to brainstorm themes, then drew the pages yourself | AI-assisted | No |
| An AI image tool created the page art and you cleaned it up lightly | AI-generated | Yes |
| An AI image tool created the page art and you edited or vectorised it heavily | AI-generated, even after substantial edits | Yes |
| Hand-drawn interior with an AI-generated cover image | AI-generated (covers count) | Yes |
| AI wrote the introduction or tips page printed in the book | AI-generated text | Yes |
- Text, images or translations created by an AI-based tool
- Still AI-generated after substantial edits
- Covers and interior artwork both count
- Declared at publish and at each republish
- You created the content yourself
- AI used to edit, refine or error-check it
- AI used to brainstorm ideas you then drew
- KDP says it is not necessary to inform it
The guidelines describe the declaration as information you give KDP. They do not describe a label on the product page. When a page sits between the two definitions, declare it; an accurate record of how each page was made settles the question in a minute.
Publish the coloring book on Amazon: title setup
Step 7 is three screens: details, content, and rights and pricing. Two choices on them are specific to coloring books.
- Details. Enter the title, author name, description, keywords and categories. Leave the low-content box unticked: KDP's own table lists coloring books under "not generally low-content".
- ISBN. Because the book is not low-content, it needs one. Take the free KDP ISBN or enter your own. The free one can only be used on KDP.
- Print options. Black ink with white paper, your trim size, bleed or no bleed to match the file, and a cover finish. The ink type cannot be changed after publication.
- Upload and preview. Upload the interior and cover, then open the Previewer. It is a required step. Page through every design and check nothing crosses the margin guides.
- AI question. Answer it from your record, for the interior and the cover.
Expected result: a draft that passes the Previewer with no flagged errors. One planning note: KDP now limits each account to creating 2 new titles and submitting 2 new titles per format each week, resetting on Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. Volume publishing is off the table, so each book has to earn its slot.
Step 8: price it in the right royalty band
One cent decides a dollar of royalty. On Amazon.com, KDP pays 60% of the list price at $9.99 and above and 50% at $9.98 and below, then subtracts the print cost. For any 8.5 by 11 inch black-ink book of 24 to 110 pages, that cost is a flat $2.84.
Amazon.com sales, black ink on white paper, $2.84 print cost. Rounded to the nearest cent. Expanded Distribution pays 40% instead. Source: our arithmetic on KDP's paperback royalty and printing cost pages, checked October 2026
The minimum list price KDP will accept is the print cost divided by the royalty rate, which is $5.68 for this book. Go past 110 pages and the print cost becomes $1.00 plus $0.017 a page, so a 150-page book costs $3.55 and every royalty above drops by $0.71. KDP's own calculator, linked from the printing cost page, shows the figures for other marketplaces.
Then order a proof. KDP says it is not mandatory, but it is the only way to see line weight, margins and cover color on the real paper before a buyer does. A royalty per copy says nothing about how many copies sell, and that part depends on the niche and on the traffic you send. Our Digital Products program covers that side: validating an idea before you build it, then the launch and funnel that put buyers in front of it.
Troubleshooting: why KDP rejects coloring book files
- Page count is even and at least 24
- File size matches the bleed setting chosen in print options
- Nothing important sits within 0.375 in of an edge or the gutter
- No more than four blank pages in a row; no more than ten at the end
- All images are 300 DPI or higher at printed size
- Layers flattened, fonts embedded, no crop marks or comments
- File names contain no emoji or special characters
- Front cover shows the title, exactly as typed in title setup
- No spine text on a book under 79 pages
- Low-content box unticked, ISBN assigned, AI answer matches your record
- White border where art should reach the edge. The file was built at trim size but the art was meant to bleed. Rebuild at 8.625 by 11.25 inches and extend the art past the trim line.
- Lines look faint or broken in the proof. They are under 0.75 point, or the image was enlarged after import. Re-export the art at full size.
- Cover rejected for size. The page count changed after the cover was built. Recalculate the spine and resize.
- Manuscript rejected for blank pages. Blank backs are fine one at a time. A block of spare pages at the end is not, beyond ten.
The same pages can also sell as a printable pack. Our guide to selling printables on Etsy covers that route, and digital products to sell on Amazon shows where coloring books sit among the other formats Amazon supports.
Making a coloring book for Amazon KDP: FAQ
How many pages does a KDP coloring book need?
At least 24. KDP sets a 24-page minimum for every paperback and rounds odd page counts up to an even number. An 8.5 by 11 inch book with black ink on white paper can run to 590 pages. Most coloring books print designs on one side only, so 50 designs use about 104 pages once you add a title page, a copyright page and a color-test page.
What size should a coloring book be on KDP?
8.5 by 11 inches is the usual choice because it matches US Letter paper, and KDP supports it with black ink on white paper. If any artwork runs to the edge of the page, build the file at 8.625 by 11.25 inches to include bleed. KDP also offers 8.5 by 8.5 inches for square books and 8.27 by 11.69 inches, which is A4. Checked October 2026.
Do I need an ISBN for a coloring book on KDP?
Yes. KDP lists coloring books as not generally low-content, so they are published as regular paperbacks, which need an ISBN. You can take a free KDP ISBN, which shows the imprint as Independently published and can only be used on KDP, or enter one you bought. Do not tick the low-content box for a coloring book. Checked October 2026.
Do I have to disclose AI-generated coloring pages on KDP?
Yes. KDP requires you to tell it about AI-generated images, including cover and interior artwork, when you publish a new book or edit and republish one. Images created by an AI tool count as AI-generated even if you applied substantial edits afterwards. If you drew the pages yourself and only used AI to refine or error-check them, that is AI-assisted and needs no disclosure.
How much does it cost to publish a coloring book on KDP?
Nothing upfront. KDP prints each copy when it is ordered and subtracts the print cost from your royalty. On Amazon.com, an 8.5 by 11 inch black-ink paperback of 24 to 110 pages costs $2.84 to print. Your own costs are the tools you use to make the art and a proof copy if you order one. Checked October 2026.
How much royalty does a KDP coloring book earn per sale?
Royalty is the royalty rate times the list price, minus the print cost. On Amazon.com the rate is 60% at $9.99 and above and 50% at $9.98 and below. For a 104-page 8.5 by 11 inch black-ink book with a $2.84 print cost, a $9.99 list price pays about $3.15 a copy and $9.98 pays $2.15. Checked October 2026.
How many books can I publish on KDP each week?
KDP limits new titles per format each week: you can create up to 2 titles and submit up to 2 new titles for publication, counted separately for ebook, paperback and hardcover. The limits reset every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC, and updates to books you already submitted do not count. Plan a catalog as two careful paperbacks a week at most. Checked October 2026.
One book is a product. A catalog is a business.
The Digital Products program, included in All Access, covers validation, product creation, pricing and launches, so each new title starts from demand instead of a guess, with the other three programs, live coaching and the private community in one subscription.
