Quick answer

Etsy allows AI-generated products in 2026 under one category of its Creativity Standards, designed by a seller, on two conditions: the item comes from your own original prompts, and the listing description says AI was used. AI prompt bundles are not allowed, and disclosure does not override the rules on copyright, listing photos or reselling other people's work.

Yes, Etsy allows AI-generated products in 2026, on two conditions: the item was generated from your own original prompts, and the listing description says AI was used to create it. The one AI product Etsy names as off limits is the prompt bundle, and a disclosure does not excuse anything else in the rulebook, from copyright to listing photos.

Rules checked October 2026 against Etsy's Creativity Standards (page last updated June 10, 2025), the Seller Policy version effective July 9, 2026, the seller handbook article What's Etsy's Stance on AI Creations?, the help page What Can I Sell on Etsy? and the Listing Image Requirements. This page is built from those published policies, not from an audit of live listings, and the listing examples further down are illustrative.

Most of the confusion comes from blending three separate questions. Is AI allowed? Yes. Does it have to be labelled? Yes, in the description. Can AI be used for anything? No. The sections below take them in that order. If you are still choosing tools, or you sell on more than one marketplace, start with our guide to AI tools for digital products, which covers the stack, the cost per product and what Amazon KDP, Creative Market and Gumroad each require.

Does Etsy allow AI-generated products? The rule in one picture

Etsy sorts everything sold on the site by what the seller did: made it, designed it, handpicked it or sourced it. AI appears in exactly one of those four categories. Under "designed by a seller", the Creativity Standards list "seller-prompted AI creations", defined as creations generated using AI tools based on a seller's original prompts, and add one sentence that does most of the work: sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI.

How an AI product becomes a compliant Etsy listing
  1. 01
    Your own prompts

The creation starts from prompts or inputs you wrote.

  2. 02
    Generate and curate

You pick, reject and refine the output.

  3. 03
    Finish the work

Edit, fix, lay out. The buyer gets a finished item.

  4. 04
List it as designed by you

Digital download, or printed by a production partner.

  5. 05
    Disclose AI

A plain sentence in the listing description.

The framework has a baseline that applies before any of that: Etsy says all items must incorporate a human touch. Its handbook describes what that looks like for AI work. Artists still make creative decisions to guide the tool and carefully curate the output to produce unique, finished works for sale. A raw, unreviewed generation dumped into a listing is not what the policy describes, even though no rule sets a minimum amount of editing.

Etsy AI policy: where AI sits in the Creativity Standards

The Etsy AI policy is not a standalone document. It is one bullet inside the Creativity Standards, one line in the Seller Policy and one handbook article explaining the reasoning. The table shows the four categories and where AI does and does not fit.

CategoryWhat it coversWhere AI fits
Made by a sellerPhysical items made by hand or with personal or computerized toolsNo AI wording. Items must be based on your original design and shown in your own photos of the finished product.
Designed by a sellerOriginal designs sold as a digital download or produced by a production partnerThe home of AI on Etsy. Seller-prompted AI creations are listed here, with disclosure in the description.
Handpicked by a sellerVintage items of 20 years or more, items from nature, curated gift basketsNo AI route.
Sourced by a sellerCraft and party supplies, buyer-personalized items made by a production partnerNo AI wording. Not a back door for resold AI packs.

Two things follow from this. First, "designed by a seller" covers both ways most AI products are sold: as an instant download, and as a design that a third party prints onto a poster, shirt or mug. Second, the "made by a seller" text never mentions AI. It covers physical items you produce yourself, and where computerized tools are involved, it requires the item to be based on your original design. If you print AI art at home and ship it, disclose the AI use in the same way; the description rule in the Seller Policy applies to any item created through the use of artificial intelligence, not only to downloads.

Buyers see a short version of the category. In July 2024 Etsy began showing an item detail such as "Made by" or "Designed by" on listing pages, according to its handbook article on the Creativity Standards. A seller-prompted AI download sits in the same "designed by" category as a hand-drawn one, so the description is where a buyer actually learns that AI was involved.

What "seller-prompted" actually requires

Three words in the definition carry weight: the prompts must be the seller's, they must be original, and the thing sold must be a creation rather than the prompt itself.

  • Yours. You wrote the prompt or supplied the inputs. Etsy's two permitted examples are a fantasy scene based on a seller's original prompt or inputs, and a custom portrait of a buyer's pet generated using AI tools.
  • Original. The standards exclude "a bundle, collection, scan, or PDF of someone else's work". An AI pack you bought with resale rights is someone else's work, whatever the licence says about reselling it.
  • Finished. Etsy's handbook says prompts are an integral part of the creative process and should not be sold separately from the final artwork. The product is the artwork.

The AI disclosure rule: what to write and where

The disclosure goes in the listing description of every AI item. Etsy does not prescribe wording, a position or a label, so the practical standard is whether a buyer who reads the description would know before paying.

Disclose AI use on a listing
  1. 1
    Put it in the description

That is the place the Creativity Standards name. Tags, photos or a shop announcement do not replace it.

  2. 2
    Put it near the top

The first lines are what buyers read. A sentence buried under the file list technically exists and helps nobody.

  3. 3
    Say what AI did

Name the part that was generated: the illustrations, the pattern, the text.

  4. 4
    Say what you did

Prompting, selection, redrawing, colour work, layout. It is true, and it is the human touch Etsy asks for.

  5. 5
    Repeat it per listing

The duty attaches to each relevant listing, so every AI item gets its own sentence.

  6. 6
Fill in the How it is made tab honestly

Answer who made the item, what it is and when, and add any production partner.

Etsy's listing form has a tab called How it's made, which its create-a-listing help page describes as who made the item, what it is and when it was made, plus any production partners. In July 2024 Etsy said it had expanded the form's options for how an item is made and the tools used, and that those additions did not, for now, change what buyers see or affect search placement. We could not find a later official statement on whether that has changed, so treat the form as a record you fill in truthfully and the description as the disclosure that counts.

One question the policy leaves open is the line between AI-generated and AI-assisted. Amazon KDP defines both; Etsy does not. Its handbook acknowledges that ordinary tools such as photo editing software now include AI features, while the Seller Policy covers any item "created through the use of artificial intelligence". Our working rule: if a generative tool produced any part of what the buyer receives, disclose it. A spell check or a background remover on your own drawing is a different thing, but when you are unsure, a short honest sentence costs nothing.

Which AI products are effectively closed on Etsy?

Only one AI product is banned by name. The rest are closed by rules that were never about AI and apply to it anyway.

  • AI prompt bundles. Named in the Creativity Standards as not qualifying, and described in the handbook as prohibited. On a plain reading, prompt packs, prompt libraries and "prompt guides" whose substance is a list of prompts all sit here.
  • Other people's AI output. Resold packs, bought bundles and scraped images fail the "someone else's work" test before AI is even considered.
  • AI passed off as handmade. "Made by a seller" means a physical item you made. An AI image is not a painting, and describing a generated print as hand-painted misstates how the item was made, which the Seller Policy requires you to represent accurately.
  • AI renders as product photos. The Listing Image Requirements ask for original photos of the actual product, not renderings, with exceptions for personalized items and partner-printed designs.
  • Characters, brands and real people. Etsy's handbook says it prohibits content that infringes the privacy, publicity and personal rights of others, and its Intellectual Property Policy covers the rest. A generator will happily draw a famous mouse. That does not make it yours to sell.
  • Anything already prohibited. The Prohibited Items Policy applies to AI output exactly as it applies to a photograph or a drawing.

The pattern is worth noticing: a disclosure answers one question, whether the buyer was told. It does not answer whether you had the right to sell the image, whether the photo shows the real product, or whether the design is yours.

Etsy AI-generated art rules in practice: compliant and non-compliant listings

Policies are easier to apply against concrete listings. These eight are illustrative, written to sit on either side of each rule; none describes a real shop.

Listing (illustrative)VerdictWhy

The same product, listed two ways
Listing that invites removal
  • Title says "hand painted watercolor"
  • Description never mentions AI
  • Files are raw generations with warped details
  • Bonus page sells the prompts as the main draw
  • Art depicts a trademarked character
Listing that fits the rules
  • Title says "watercolor style botanical print set"
  • Description opens with the AI sentence
  • Files are curated, repaired and print-tested
  • The finished artwork is the product
  • Subject and characters are your own

The right-hand column is also the better product. A buyer of printable wall art is paying for something that prints cleanly at the size promised, and that is the part a generator does not do for you. Our AI coloring pages tutorial walks through that finishing work for line art, where raw output fails most visibly.

Can you sell AI art on Etsy in 2026 as prints and physical products?

Yes. "Designed by a seller" covers designs offered as a digital download and designs produced or printed by a third party, so the same artwork can be sold as a file, as a poster or on a product. Each route adds its own duties.

  • Digital download. Disclose AI in the description. Etsy allows up to five files of 20MB each per listing; our guide to file types you can sell on Etsy covers formats and ZIP packaging.
  • Printed by a production partner. Two disclosures: AI in the description, and the production partner in the listing. Etsy also asks for accurate information about where the item ships from.
  • Listing photos. Where your original design is printed onto a base item such as a shirt or mug, Etsy allows a stock photo mockup. Where a partner manufactures a unique item for you, such as a book, it asks for a real photo of the physical product.

Mockups are a presentation layer, so keep them honest about scale, paper and what is included. The method in our Canva mockups guide for Etsy works the same for AI art as for anything else. For shop setup, fees and delivery, the complete guide to selling digital products on Etsy picks up where this policy page stops.

What happens if you skip the disclosure?

Etsy reserves the right to remove listings that do not follow its policies, and the Creativity Standards add that sellers remain obligated to pay any fees incurred in listing such items. Its help page on removed listings says the Policy violations page shows which listings were removed and why, and that an appeal may be available depending on the policy and the seller.

What Etsy does not publish is how it finds undisclosed AI, how many removals lead to a suspension, or whether disclosure affects ranking. Anyone quoting numbers on those points is guessing. The only plan that does not depend on a guess is to disclose from the first listing. Adding the sentence later to a hundred live listings is a worse afternoon than writing it once into your description template.

There is a second exposure that has nothing to do with Etsy's moderators. Purely prompted images are hard to protect under copyright, which matters when a competitor copies your best seller and you want it taken down. The human editing and arrangement you add is what strengthens that claim. Our guide to DMCA takedowns on Etsy explains what a notice has to contain.

Etsy describes this position as provisional. The handbook says it is closely monitoring developments, listening to community feedback and periodically re-evaluating its policies, and it names open questions about how models are trained. Before you build a shop that depends on the current wording, check the "last updated" date at the bottom of the Creativity Standards. If it is later than June 10, 2025, read the "designed by a seller" section again.

Allowed is not the same as worth listing

The policy bar is low: your prompts, a finished item, one honest sentence. The commercial bar is where AI shops struggle. Everyone has the same generators, so a generic image set competes with thousands of near-identical ones and with buyers who can make their own. What still earns a sale is the part that takes judgement: a specific buyer, a coherent set, files that print properly and a listing that explains what the buyer gets.

Craft patterns show the gap clearly. A generated cross-stitch or crochet chart can look plausible and be impossible to make, and a buyer who discovers that mid-project leaves a review that outlasts the sale. Disclosure does not fix a product that does not work. Testing does.

That is the point where a policy explainer runs out. The Digital Products program covers the rest of the job: validating that a specific buyer wants the product before you build it, pricing it, and the launch and funnel that put it in front of people.

Before you publish: the AI listing checklist

Run this on every AI listing
  • The prompts or inputs were mine, not a purchased prompt pack or a resold bundle
  • I selected and finished the output; the files are not raw generations
  • The description says AI was used, in the first few lines
  • The description says which part was AI and which part was my work
  • Title and tags do not claim hand painted, hand drawn or handmade
  • No protected characters, logos, brand names or celebrity likenesses
  • The product is the finished work, not the prompts
  • Photos show the real product, or a mockup where Etsy allows one
  • Any production partner is added to the listing
  • I opened and test-printed every file as a buyer would

Etsy and AI-generated products: FAQ

Does Etsy allow AI-generated products in 2026?

Yes. Etsy's Creativity Standards list seller-prompted AI creations under the 'designed by a seller' category, which covers digital downloads and designs printed by a production partner. Two conditions apply: the item must come from your own original prompts, and the listing description must say it was created with AI. AI prompt bundles are named as not qualifying. Checked October 2026.

Do I have to disclose AI on Etsy, and where?

Yes. The Creativity Standards say sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI, and the Seller Policy repeats the duty for each relevant listing. Write a plain sentence near the top of the description of every AI listing. A note in your shop announcement or About section does not replace the per-listing disclosure.

Can you sell AI art on Etsy as prints or wall art?

Yes, as a digital download or as a print made by a production partner, because both sit under 'designed by a seller'. Disclose the AI use in the description, and disclose the production partner in the listing if one prints the item. Etsy's image rules allow a stock photo mockup when your design is printed onto a base item by a partner.

Can I sell AI prompts on Etsy?

No. Etsy's Creativity Standards list AI prompt bundles as an example of items that do not qualify, and its seller handbook says the sale of AI prompt bundles is prohibited. Etsy's reasoning is that prompts are part of the creative process and should not be sold separately from the finished artwork. Sell the finished work instead.

What happens if I do not disclose AI on an Etsy listing?

Etsy says it may remove listings that do not follow its policies, and that sellers still owe any fees incurred in listing them. Removed listings appear on your Policy violations page, where an appeal is available in some cases. Etsy does not publish how it finds undisclosed AI, so the safe plan is to disclose from the first day.

Does AI-assisted editing count as AI-generated on Etsy?

Etsy does not publish a threshold. Its handbook notes that everyday tools such as photo editing software now include AI features, while the policy wording covers any item created with the use of AI. A cautious working rule: if a generative tool produced any part of what the buyer receives, such as the image, the pattern or the text, disclose it.

Can I use AI images as Etsy listing photos?

For a physical item you make yourself, no. Etsy's Listing Image Requirements ask for original photos of the actual product buyers will receive, not renderings or stock photos. The stated exceptions are personalized items and designs printed onto a base item by a production partner, where a mockup can be used. An AI render of a product you make by hand is not on that list.
