Quick answer

To make an ebook to sell, decide first whether it is a PDF for your own storefront or a Kindle ebook for Amazon KDP, because the file, the price and the royalty all follow from that. KDP pays 70% only from $2.99 to $12.99; a direct Gumroad sale keeps about 82% of a $17 PDF. Write to one outcome, export the right format, test it on a phone and plan updates.

To make an ebook to sell, choose one reader and one outcome, decide whether it will be a PDF sold from your own storefront or a Kindle ebook on Amazon KDP, write it with real heading styles, and export the file that channel needs. Make the channel decision before you write, because it sets the layout, the price you can charge and how much of each sale you keep.

Checked October 2026 against KDP's help pages on eBook list price requirements, eBook royalties, the digital pricing page, enrolling in KDP Select, supported eBook formats and Kindle Create, Gumroad's pricing page and help articles on fees, the Library and PDF stamping, Google's help on downloading a file, and Canva's help on PDF downloads. Per-sale figures are our arithmetic on those published rates. We quote no sales or earnings figures.

Most guides on this start with writing. The order here is different on purpose: a 40-page designed PDF and a reflowable Kindle book are two different products that happen to share a manuscript, and finding that out after the layout is done costs a week. An ebook is also one of several formats you could build; our guide to creating a digital product covers validation and licensing for all of them.

Who this guide is for

It is for someone who knows a subject well enough to solve one problem in 20 to 80 pages and wants to sell that as a file. It suits a first product, because an ebook needs no camera, no hosting and no inventory. It does not suit an idea that needs video to teach, or a topic you would be researching from scratch.

PDF ebook or KDP ebook: decide before you write

Two questions settle it: can you bring your own buyers, and what is the guide worth? The matrix gives the short answer. The table under it gives the reasons.

Where to sell, by audience and price
$13 and up
The hard corner. KDP pays 35% up here and a storefront has no traffic. Build a small audience first, or publish a shorter Kindle edition.
PDF on your own storefront. A direct Gumroad sale keeps about 82% to 84% from $17 to $27, and you learn who bought.
$12.99 or less
Kindle ebook on KDP. Amazon's search brings the readers, and the 70% rate applies from $2.99 to $12.99.
Either, or both. A direct sale keeps more above about $4; KDP adds reach. Selling in both places is allowed outside KDP Select.

Three rules in that table do most of the work.

  • The royalty band. KDP's list price page gives the 70% option a range of $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com, raised from $9.99 on July 7, 2026. Outside it you earn 35%. The 70% option also subtracts $0.15 per megabyte for delivery and requires the ebook to sit at least 20% below any print edition's list price on Amazon.
  • Exclusivity. KDP Select is optional. Enrolling means the Kindle ebook can only be distributed through KDP and public libraries for the 90-day term, which renews automatically unless you opt out. Print, audio and a sample of up to 10% are exempt. You cannot be in Select and sell the PDF from your own store.
  • Price matching. Outside Select you may sell elsewhere, but KDP's pricing page says it might sell your book at a lower price to match a third party's price. Keep the two prices aligned, or expect the Kindle price to drop to meet your storefront's.

For the Amazon route in full, including account setup, categories and the weekly limit on new titles, see how to sell on Amazon KDP.

Why Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 changes the math for $9 to $27 PDFs

Gumroad's direct fee has a fixed part and KDP's 70% rate has a ceiling. Those two facts pull in opposite directions as the price rises. Below about $4, the fixed $0.80 of Gumroad and card fees outweighs the difference in percentage, and KDP keeps more. Above it, the direct sale keeps more. Above $12.99, KDP falls to 35% and the gap becomes the whole argument.

$17.00$5.95$14.01$11.90
$27.00$9.45$22.72$18.90

Read the table as two markets, not one price list. On Amazon, the royalty band is the reason ebooks cluster at $12.99 and under: an ebook at $14.99 earns less than the same book at $12.99. On your own storefront there is no band, so a guide that saves a reader a weekend can carry $17 or $27 if the page makes the case. That is what pricing power means here. The catch is the column the table cannot show, which is traffic. Amazon supplies searchers. A Gumroad page supplies none until you send them, and our Gumroad fees breakdown covers the Discover marketplace, which only opens after your account has genuine sales.

Price it for the channel you chose

On KDP the band does most of the pricing. A first ebook belongs between $2.99 and $12.99, and the useful question is which end: a short guide to one problem sits low, a full method with templates sits high. Delivery is charged by file size, so images cost money. At $0.15 per megabyte, a 10 MB file takes $1.50 off the amount the 70% is applied to, which is about $1.05 less royalty on every sale. Compress images before you upload.

On a storefront, price against the outcome and against the paid alternatives you found when you checked demand, not against Kindle prices. A direct Gumroad sale keeps 78% at $9 and 84% at $27, so the fee is no reason to price low. Start at a figure you can defend in one sentence on the sales page, and raise it when an update adds something concrete. Our pricing strategy framework covers the floor, the market band and the ceiling.

A print edition is a third option that only KDP offers. A paperback pays 60% of the list price at $9.99 and above, less the printing cost, and nothing is printed until a copy is ordered. It also caps the Kindle price, because the 70% option needs the ebook at least 20% below the paperback.

Write it: one outcome, a structure, real headings

An ebook that sells is a set of instructions with a promise on the first page, not a long blog post. Keep the theory short and give most of each chapter to steps the reader can follow.

A two-week plan for the manuscript
  1. 1
    Day 1: write the promise

One sentence: by the end, the reader will have what? If you cannot finish it, the topic is too wide.

  2. 2
Days 2 to 3: check that people pay for this

Find paid guides and courses on the same problem and read their reviews for what is missing.

  3. 3
    Day 4: outline

The promise, a one-page map of the method, one chapter per step, a checklist, and what to do next.

  4. 4
    Days 5 to 10: draft

One chapter a day in Google Docs or Word. Chapter titles in Heading 1, sections in Heading 2.

  5. 5
Days 11 to 12: cut and test

Remove anything the reader cannot act on. Give the draft to one person in your audience and watch where they stall.

  6. 6
Days 13 to 14: format and export

Lay out the PDF or prepare the Kindle file, then open it on a phone before anyone else does.

The heading styles are not decoration. KDP's formatting guide tells authors to apply Heading 1 to chapter titles, and Kindle Create uses detected chapter titles to build the book's table of contents. The same styles give an EPUB its navigation. Bold text that merely looks like a heading gives you neither.

If AI writes any of the text, check the rules where you sell. KDP requires you to declare AI-generated text, images and translations when you publish, and counts content as AI-generated even after heavy editing. Structuring a guide people actually finish is its own skill; our Digital Products program has a full lesson on it, the Ebook/Guide Blueprint, with a seven-part structure and a module on validating and pre-selling before you write.

Format it: PDF, EPUB or KPF

Pick the tool by the file you need, not by habit. These are the export options each tool documents.

ToolExportsSuitsWatch for
Google DocsPDF and EPUB, from File > DownloadText-led guides; one source for both formatsPlain layout. Use heading styles so the EPUB has navigation
CanvaPDF Standard for screens, PDF Print for printingDesigned guides, workbooks and coversNo EPUB among its download types. Flatten PDF turns pages into images and strips accessibility tags
Microsoft WordDOCX, and PDFManuscripts headed for KDPKDP says most DOCX files convert well; complex formatting converts less reliably
Kindle CreateKPF for KDP; EPUB for reflowable booksTurning a DOC or DOCX into a Kindle ebookWindows and Mac. A PDF import becomes a fixed Print Replica book, not reflowable text

For Amazon, KDP lists DOC or DOCX, KPF and EPUB as its recommended formats. It accepts PDF for ebooks in a limited set of languages but does not recommend it, because a fixed page does not reflow on a Kindle. For your own storefront the reverse holds: PDF is the format every buyer can open, and an EPUB beside it is a courtesy to people who read on phones.

Before you export
  • A page size chosen for the screen: a smaller page with larger type reads better on a phone than a full letter page
  • A table of contents whose entries are links
  • Every link in the text clicked once
  • Fonts and images you hold the rights to, including the cover
  • Text left as text: an unflattened PDF can be searched, copied and read aloud
  • File size checked: Etsy caps a file at 20MB, and Gumroad's in-browser reader takes PDFs and EPUBs up to 32 MB
  • The date or version number on the copyright page
  • The file opened on a phone, a laptop and, for EPUB, an e-reader app

Deliver it: where to sell PDF ebooks

You do not need a website. A hosted storefront gives you a product page, a checkout and automatic delivery, and you link to it from wherever your readers already are.

  • Gumroad. No monthly fee, and it handles sales tax as merchant of record. Buyers get a Read button for PDFs and EPUBs up to 32 MB and a Send to Kindle option. PDF stamping adds the buyer's email address to the first page, which Gumroad describes as a deterrent, not DRM. Setup is in our guide to selling on Gumroad.
  • Etsy. PDF and EPUB are both on its supported list, with five files of 20MB per listing, and buyers arrive through Etsy search. See file types you can sell on Etsy.
  • Other storefronts. Payhip and similar tools trade a lower fee for fewer built-in buyers. Our comparison of selling without a website works through the costs.

Whichever you choose, the product page has to answer four questions before the buyer asks: what the file is, how many pages, which version or date, and what happens if they are unhappy. Say plainly that it is a digital download and state your refund terms; our refund policy template has wording for digital files. Then buy it yourself, or have a friend buy it, and open the file from the delivery email on a phone.

An ebook business in 2026: what one ebook leads to

One ebook is a product, not a business. What it does well is prove that a specific group of people will pay you for a specific result, cheaply and quickly. The next products come from what buyers ask for after reading: the worksheets become a workbook, the method becomes a template pack, the questions become a course.

Three habits make that possible. Collect buyers' email addresses where the platform allows it. A storefront such as Gumroad shows you who bought; KDP reports sales, and we found no KDP page that offers authors their readers' addresses. Date every version and send updates, so the book stays current and buyers hear from you again. And give away one useful chapter as a free download, so people can judge your work before paying; our list of lead magnet ideas has formats that suit an excerpt. Expect the first ebook to earn slowly and teach quickly.

Mistakes to avoid when you create and sell ebooks

  • Designing before deciding the channel. A two-column PDF layout cannot be poured into a Kindle book.
  • Pricing a Kindle ebook just above $12.99. The royalty halves at the edge of the band.
  • Different prices on Amazon and your storefront. KDP may match the lower one.
  • Flattening the PDF to protect it. It stops honest readers searching the text and does little against copying.
  • Publishing without a date. Readers and you both need to know which version they hold.
  • Writing for everyone. A guide for one kind of reader with one problem is easier to write, to price and to find.

Making and selling an ebook: FAQ

How do I make an ebook to sell?

Pick one reader and one outcome, then decide where it will sell before you write, because a PDF guide and a Kindle ebook are built differently. Draft it in Google Docs or Word using real heading styles, export a PDF for your own storefront or a DOCX, EPUB or KPF file for Amazon KDP, and test the file on a phone. Then list it, price it and plan the first update.

Should I sell my ebook as a PDF or on Amazon KDP?

Sell a Kindle ebook on KDP if you have no audience and the book suits a price from $2.99 to $12.99, where KDP pays 70%. Sell a PDF from a storefront such as Gumroad if you can bring your own buyers or the guide is worth $13 or more, because KDP pays 35% above $12.99 while a direct Gumroad sale keeps about 82% at $17. Checked October 2026.

What is the best format for an ebook, PDF or EPUB?

PDF keeps your layout fixed, so it suits designed guides, workbooks and anything with tables or worksheets. EPUB reflows the text to the screen and lets the reader change the font size, so it suits long reading on phones and e-readers. Many sellers ship both. For Amazon, KDP recommends DOCX, KPF or EPUB and accepts PDF without recommending it.

Can I sell the same ebook on Amazon and on my own store?

Yes, unless you enroll it in KDP Select. Select is an optional 90-day program that renews automatically, and KDP says an enrolled ebook must be exclusive to the Kindle Store for that period, apart from a sample of up to 10%. Outside Select you can sell elsewhere, but KDP says it may lower its price to match a third party's price, and your royalty follows.

How much does Gumroad take from an ebook sale?

On a sale through your own link, Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50, and card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 comes on top. A $17 PDF leaves $14.01 and a $27 PDF leaves $22.72. A sale to a new customer through its Discover marketplace costs a flat 30% instead. There is no monthly fee, and Gumroad handles sales tax as merchant of record. Checked October 2026.

What royalty does Amazon KDP pay on ebooks?

On Amazon.com, 70% of the list price less a delivery cost of $0.15 per megabyte when the ebook is priced from $2.99 to $12.99, and 35% at any other price. The upper limit rose from $9.99 on July 7, 2026. The 70% option also requires the ebook to be priced at least 20% below any print edition on Amazon. Checked October 2026.

Can I make an ebook in Canva or Google Docs?

Yes. Google Docs downloads a document as a PDF or as an EPUB from the File menu, which covers both a storefront PDF and a reflowable file. Canva exports PDF Standard for screens and PDF Print for printing and lists no EPUB download, so it suits designed PDF guides. For Kindle, Amazon's Kindle Create imports a DOC or DOCX file and produces the KPF file KDP recommends.
