To raise prices on digital products without losing sales, raise after an improvement or proof point, decide who keeps the old price, and announce the change with a firm date so the deadline pulls purchases forward. On Etsy, increases are not pushed to favoriters, so you announce through your own list. On Gumroad memberships, a toggle decides whether existing members move to the new price.
How to raise prices on digital products without losing sales: tie the increase to a real improvement, decide who keeps the old price, and announce the new price with a fixed date before you switch it. The announcement turns the increase into a reason to buy now, and a clear grandfather rule keeps existing customers on your side.
Most creators underprice their first product, then sit on that price for a year because changing it feels risky. The risk is smaller than it looks. A one-time download already sold is not affected by a new price at all, and the people who were about to buy anyway get a nudge to do it before the date. This guide covers the timing, the grandfather decision, the email sequence, copyable announcement templates, and the platform mechanics on Etsy and Gumroad. If you have not set a starting price yet, begin with our digital product pricing strategy hub and the step-by-step guide to pricing a digital product.
Who this playbook is for
It is written for solo creators and small teams selling templates, ebooks, presets, courses, printables or memberships through Etsy, Gumroad or their own checkout. It assumes you have at least a small email list or social audience. If you have neither, you can still raise prices, but you lose the announcement window, which is the part that protects revenue during the switch.
It does not cover discount strategy or launches from zero. Those are different problems: a launch creates demand for something new, while a price rise re-prices something buyers already know. The emails look similar, but the promise is different. A launch says "this exists". A price rise says "this is worth more now, and here is your last chance at the old number".
When should you raise digital product prices?
Raise prices when something has changed, not because a month has passed. Buyers accept an increase they can explain to themselves. From running product launches for creator accounts, these are the triggers that make an increase feel earned rather than greedy:
- You added real value. New modules, more templates, a bonus file, video walkthroughs, or a format the original lacked. The increase has an obvious reason.
- The product is proven. Reviews, testimonials or repeat buyers now show it works. Early buyers took a risk on an unproven product; later buyers are paying for proof.
- Your costs went up. Platform fees, payment processing, hosting or the time you spend on support. A price set before fees were counted is often a loss on small orders.
- The product sells without effort. If it converts steadily with little promotion, the price is probably below what the audience will pay.
- Your positioning moved. A product aimed at beginners that now serves professionals, or one that now includes a commercial licence, belongs at a different price point.
The wrong triggers are a slow month, a competitor's price, or a wish to make a coming sale look bigger. A slow month is a traffic or offer problem, and raising the price will not fix it. Inflating a price to discount it later is a legal problem, covered in the Etsy section below.
How to raise prices on digital products: the system end to end
The whole process fits into roughly two weeks of work spread over a month. Each stage below has one job, and skipping the first two is how sellers end up with angry customers or a quiet launch.
- 01Pick the trigger
Name the improvement or proof point that justifies the new price.
- 02Set the new price
Check margin after platform fees and compare with the alternatives buyers see.
- 03Write the grandfather rule
Who keeps the old price, for how long, and what they keep access to.
- 04Announce with a date
Three to four emails plus social posts, all pointing to one deadline.
- 05Switch on schedule
Change the price at the stated time. Do not extend the deadline.
- 06Measure for four weeks
Compare conversion and revenue per visitor, not just order count.
Set the number before you write a word of the announcement. Run the old and new price through the free Digital Product Pricing Calculator to see the margin after fees at each level, and check what a buyer would pay for the closest alternative. A new price that is still well below the next-best option is easy to defend. One that leapfrogs every alternative needs a stronger reason.
Raise in one clear step. Several small increases over a few months train your audience to expect another one, and each needs its own announcement. One larger, explained increase is easier to communicate and easier to measure.
Who keeps the old price? The grandfather decision
Grandfathering means letting a group of customers keep the price they signed up at. For one-time digital products it mostly does not apply: past buyers own what they bought, and a new price changes nothing for them. It matters when a product carries ongoing updates, or when it is a membership that bills every month.
| Product type | Existing customers | New customers | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-time download (template, ebook, preset) | Nothing changes for past buyers | New price for everyone from the switch date | Free updates stay free for past buyers |
| Product with ongoing updates | Past buyers keep updates they paid for | New buyers pay the higher price | Say clearly which future versions are included |
| Membership or subscription | Current members can be kept on the old price | New members pay the new price | Moving members up needs advance notice |
| Bundle that includes the product | Past bundle buyers keep their files | Re-check the bundle discount still makes sense | Bundle should stay cheaper than buying parts |
| Licence tiers (personal vs commercial) | Existing licences keep their terms | New tiers priced from the switch date | Never change the terms of a licence already sold |
For memberships, the default that keeps the most goodwill is to leave current members on their old price and charge the new price only to new sign-ups. That turns early membership into a reward and gives your announcement a strong line: join before the date and keep this price for as long as you stay. Moving existing members up is a legitimate choice, especially if the old price no longer covers what you deliver, but it needs advance notice and will cost some cancellations.
Whatever you choose, write it down in one sentence and repeat that sentence everywhere: the emails, the product page, any FAQ. Confusion about who pays what generates more support messages than the increase itself.
- The membership is young and churn matters most
- You want an early-member reward to sell with
- The old price still covers your costs
- Your community depends on long-term members
- The old price no longer covers delivery
- You added major value every member uses
- You can give clear advance notice
- You accept some cancellations as the trade-off
The announcement sequence that turns a price rise into a buying window
A deadline changes behaviour. People who have been meaning to buy for weeks act when they know the price will go up on a specific day. The sequence below is built around that one date. Send it to your email list; post shorter versions on social channels on the same days.
- Day 1The announcement
What is changing, the new price, the exact switch date and time, and why.
- Day 4The value email
Show what is inside now, especially anything added since launch.
- Day 8The objection email
Answer the questions people ask before buying: fit, format, refunds, licence.
- Day 10, morningLast day
Short reminder that the price changes tonight, with one link.
- Day 10, eveningFinal hours
Two or three lines. Then switch the price at the stated time.
Keep every email to one call to action: the product link. Do not add a discount on top; the current price is the offer. And switch the price at exactly the time you named. Extending the deadline once teaches your list that your deadlines are soft, and the next announcement will move fewer people.
If you want the full structure behind launch-style sequences, our email marketing guide for digital product creators covers list building, segmentation and how often to send without burning out your subscribers.
What should a price increase announcement template say?
A good announcement answers four questions in the first few lines: what is changing, when, why, and what the reader can do about it. Copy and adapt these; replace the bracketed parts.
Subject: [Product] goes up to [new price] on [date]
Hi [first name],
On [date] at [time and timezone], [product] goes from [old price] to [new price].
Why: since launch I have added [specific additions]. The price has not
changed since [month], and it no longer matches what is inside.
If you have been thinking about it, this is the last week at [old price]:

Already bought it? Nothing changes for you. You keep your files and
[free updates / access], at no extra cost.
[Your name]For a membership where current members keep their price:
Subject: Membership price changes on [date] (members keep theirs)
Hi [first name],
From [date], new members will pay [new price] a month.
If you are already a member, your price stays at [old price] for as long
as your membership stays active. You do not need to do anything.
If you have been on the fence, joining before [date] locks in [old price]:

Subject: Last day at [old price]
[Product] goes up to [new price] tonight at [time and timezone].
[link]How do you raise prices on Etsy digital products?
Etsy lets you edit a single listing's price from Shop Manager, and edit prices on many listings at once: in Listings, tick the listings, open Editing options and choose Edit prices. Etsy's help page on domestic, global and US-specific pricing says you can edit prices on up to 500 listings at a time, and that sellers outside the US can set separate prices for domestic buyers, US buyers and everyone else (checked October 2026).
The Etsy-specific catch is the announcement. Etsy's help pages describe the app's Deals feed showing shoppers when an item they favorited has been reduced in price, and the sales and discounts tools can send targeted offers to shoppers who favorited an item. Nothing in those pages describes a notice going out when a price goes up (checked October 2026). People who favorited your listing months ago will simply see the new price next time they look.
You also cannot message them about it. Etsy's Seller Policy says Messages may not be used for unsolicited advertising or promotions (checked October 2026). So on Etsy, the announcement runs through channels you own:
- Your email list. Only people who opted in through your own site or a freebie, not addresses copied from Etsy orders for marketing.
- Your shop announcement and listing descriptions. A line such as "Price increases to [new price] on [date]" is visible to anyone who visits during the window.
- Social channels. Instagram, Pinterest or wherever your buyers follow you.
One more rule matters if you plan to discount later. Etsy's seller handbook article on truthful advertising and discount practices says a reference price must be the genuine, usual price, offered for a substantial period, and that you cannot inflate a price briefly just to create the appearance of a discount (checked October 2026). Raising your price is fine. Raising it for a week so a "50% off" sale looks bigger is not.
For the margin side of an Etsy increase, our breakdown of Etsy digital product profit margins shows which fees scale with price and which stay fixed per order.
Raising prices on Gumroad
On Gumroad, a one-time product's price is the Amount field in the product editor; change it and the new price applies to the next sale. Past buyers keep their purchase. Gumroad's email updates feature lets you send an announcement to your subscribers, your customers or both, which covers the announcement sequence above without another tool (checked October 2026).
Memberships have an explicit grandfather switch. Gumroad's help article on selling memberships describes an Apply price changes to existing customers setting on each tier; with it on, existing customers get a notification email with 7 days' notice before the higher price takes effect. Leave it off and only new members pay the new price (checked October 2026). Decide which way it should go before you save the tier, because that toggle is your grandfather rule.
Gumroad's fees are a percentage plus a fixed amount per sale, so a higher price also improves the share you keep on each order; the current rates are on Gumroad's fees page. If you sell on Gumroad for the first time, our Gumroad selling guide walks through setup end to end.
If you want the full system for building, pricing and selling a product line rather than re-pricing one item, our Digital Products program covers the offer ladder, sales pages and email sequences we use.
After the switch: how to read the results
Expect the days right after the switch to be quiet. Many of the people who were going to buy soon bought before the deadline, so the first week at the new price is not a fair test. Wait about four weeks before deciding whether the price is working.
Then compare revenue per visitor, not order count. If the new price is meaningfully higher, you can sell fewer copies and still earn more. A worked illustration with hypothetical inputs: a product moving from 20 to 30 on the same traffic needs only two thirds of the old order count to match the old revenue. If orders fall by less than that, the increase paid for itself. If they fall by more over a full month, look first at the product page: does it explain the new value as clearly as your emails did?
- 1Week 1: ignore the dip
The deadline pulled demand forward. Note the pre-deadline spike and move on.
- 2Week 2: check the page
Make sure the product page shows the additions that justified the price.
- 3Week 3: read the questions
Support messages and comments show which objections the new price created.
- 4Week 4: compare revenue per visitor
Use the same traffic source and the same number of days before and after.
Mistakes that turn a price rise into lost sales
- Raising silently. You lose the buying window and surprise people who had the old price in mind.
- No reason given. Buyers fill the gap with the least flattering explanation.
- Soft deadlines. Extending the date once weakens every future deadline.
- Changing licence terms after the sale. Existing buyers keep what they paid for, in the terms they paid for.
- Raising and discounting at once. It confuses the offer and, on Etsy, can break the truthful discount rules.
- Judging on week one. The pre-deadline spike and post-deadline lull distort every short comparison.
- Forgetting bundles. If a bundle includes the product, its price may now be lower than the sum of parts by more than you intended, or not at all.
The do-this-week list
- Write one sentence that explains why the price is going up
- Run old and new prices through the pricing calculator to compare margins after fees
- Decide the grandfather rule and write it in one sentence
- Pick the switch date and time, including timezone
- Schedule three to four emails and matching social posts
- Add the date to your shop announcement or product page
- On Gumroad memberships, set the existing-customers toggle on purpose
- Update bundles, upsells and any page that quotes the old price
- Put a reminder in your calendar to review results after four weeks
Raising digital product prices: FAQ
How do I raise prices on digital products without losing sales?
Raise the price after the product has been improved or proven, decide in advance who keeps the old price, and announce the change to your email list with a firm date. The days before a deadline usually pull purchases forward, so the announcement itself does much of the selling. Then watch conversion for a few weeks before judging the new price, rather than reacting to the first quiet day.
Should existing customers pay the new price?
For one-time digital products, existing buyers already own what they paid for, so a price rise does not affect them at all. The question only matters for memberships and subscriptions. There, keeping current members on their old price (grandfathering) protects goodwill and retention, while moving them up raises revenue faster but invites cancellations. Many sellers grandfather members and raise the price for new sign-ups only.
How much should I raise the price of a digital product?
There is no universal percentage. Anchor the new price to what changed: added content, better results for buyers, or a price that was set too low to cover fees and your time. Check the number against competing products and your own margins, then raise in one clear step rather than several small creeps. The free Digital Product Pricing Calculator on this site helps you test the margin at each price.
Does Etsy tell favoriters when I raise a price?
Etsy's help pages describe shoppers being shown deals when a favorited item has been reduced in price, and targeted offers to shoppers who favorited an item. They do not describe any notification for a price increase. Etsy's Seller Policy also bars unsolicited promotions through Messages, so announce a coming increase through your own email list, social channels and shop announcement instead. Checked October 2026.
Can I raise the price and then run a sale?
Only if the higher price is genuine. Etsy's seller guidance on truthful discounting says the original price must be the usual price, offered for a substantial period, and that you cannot inflate a price briefly to make a discount look bigger. Consumer law in many regions says the same. Raise the price, sell at it for a real period, and only later use it as a reference for a sale.
How do I raise the price of a Gumroad membership for existing members?
In the membership tier settings, Gumroad offers an Apply price changes to existing customers toggle. Gumroad's help center says that when you increase a membership price with it switched on, existing customers get a notification email with 7 days' notice before the change takes effect. Leave it off to keep current members on their old price. Checked October 2026.
Price it right, then sell it on a system.
