Quick answer

Instagram reel templates copy the music and clip timing of an existing reel so you only add your own photos or videos. Find them under Create, Reel, Templates, on any reel with a Template by label, or in Edits, then add media, replace weak clips and share. Templates made in Edits depend on the original staying up, so use borrowed templates for quick posts and rebuild the structure by hand for reels you need to keep.

Instagram reel templates let you reuse the music and clip timing of an existing reel and drop in your own photos or videos. To use one, tap Create, choose Reel, tap Templates, pick a template, add your media and share; or tap Template by on a reel you like, then Use template.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on using a template to create a reel, creating a template from a video made on Edits and which reels are recommended, Instagram's August 2026 Edits update, Meta's Edits announcement, CapCut's help articles on searching templates and template watermarks, and Canva's Reels templates page. Instagram publishes no performance data for templates, so nothing here claims a template earns more reach.

This is the templates page of our Instagram Reels guide, which covers making a reel from scratch. Templates are the shortcut: someone else has already solved the timing.

What you'll have at the end

One reel built on a template, a short list of saved templates that suit your niche, and three structures you can rebuild by hand when no template fits. Before you start:

  • The Instagram app on a phone, updated. The Help Center's template steps are written for the mobile app.
  • At least 3 photos or clips of your own. Vertical footage saves cropping.
  • Edits installed, if you want templates that creators shared from that app.

What are Instagram reel templates, and what do they copy?

A template is a reel with the footage taken out. Instagram's Help Center puts it this way: templates "allow you to use the same music and timing as the original reel, and replace the photos or video clips with your own." Templates made in Edits can carry more, described as "the music, clip length, and other elements."

Part of the reelComes with the template? What you supply
MusicYesNothing. The original track comes with the template.
Clip timingYesNothing. Each slot keeps the original length.
The original footageNo, unless the creator allowed specific clips to be reused in EditsYour own photos and videos, one per slot
Text and overlaysIn Edits templates, when the creator included themRewrite them as your own hook
Caption, cover and hashtagsNoAll yours
CreditThe template creator's username, shown on your reelNothing. It is added for you.

Two limits explain most confusion. Templates "are only available for reels that include music and at least 3 clips", so a one-take talking reel never shows the option. And "not all reels can be used as a template", because creators can switch reuse off.

How to use Instagram reel templates, step by step

The whole flow is eight taps. Each step below has the result to expect.

Build a reel from a template
  1. 1
    Tap Create, then Reel

Create is at the top of the home screen. Swiping right from Feed opens it too.

  2. 2
    Tap Templates

Expected: the Template Browser opens with templates to swipe through.

  3. 3
    Tap the template you want

Play it once with sound first. Count the cuts so you know how many clips you need.

  4. 4
    Tap Add media

Tap your photos or videos in the order they should appear. Expected: each slot fills in turn.

  5. 5
Tap Next and watch it through

Expected: your clips cut on the original's timing, with its music.

  6. 6
    Replace the weak clips

Tap a clip, then Replace media, and pick a better one. Put your strongest clip first.

  7. 7
    Rewrite any text

If the template carried text or overlays, they are somebody else's words. Put your hook in.

  8. 8
    Tap Next, preview and share

Write the caption, choose a cover and share. Expected: the reel posts with a credit to the template's creator.

The shorter route starts from a reel you are already watching. Tap Template by on the reel, then Use template, and you land on the Add media step with that format loaded.

Instagram reel template: how to find one for your niche

Start inside Instagram, because those templates use Instagram's own music and leave no logo behind. Go wider only when nothing there fits.

The Template Browser shows what is popular across Instagram, not what suits a bakery or a physio clinic. For a niche, work backwards from reels:

  1. Search your niche on Instagram and open the reels in the results.
  2. Look for the Template by label. Any reel that shows it can be reused in two taps.
  3. Save the ones that fit. The Help Center says you can save favourite templates in the Template Browser, so you are not searching again next week.
  4. Check Edits. It shows reels that are trending on Instagram, and templates shared from Edits are reused there.

When you leave Instagram's apps, two things change. CapCut's help center says a watermark on a template video usually "comes from a default ending clip or built-in template element", so scrub to the end of the timeline and delete it. And add the music inside Instagram where you can: Instagram lists music from its own library, or original audio, among the things it looks for in recommended reels. Our guide to finding trending audio covers that half.

The three template types worth saving

Most reel templates are one of three structures. These are our working structures and the timings are illustrative; Instagram publishes no data on which type performs best, and neither do we.

TypeGood forClipsWhat makes or breaks it
Talking headTeaching, opinions, answering a question1 take, or 3 to 5 with cutawaysThe first line. Nothing else saves a slow opening.
TransitionBefore and after, outfits, rooms, food, travel3 to 8 short clipsMatching the framing between clips, and cutting on the beat.
Text on screenOne idea, a list headline, a relatable line1 clip or a loopThe sentence. If it is not worth reading twice, no clip rescues it.
Pick the type by what you have to work with
Many cuts
Transition. Cuts on the beat carry it. This is the format Instagram templates were built for.
Talking head with cutaways. Your voice runs under the clips. Most work, most reusable.
Few cuts
Text on screen. One clip, one or two lines. The fastest reel to make.
Straight talking head. One take, jump cuts only. Lives on the first line.
No voiceover
You talk

Only the transition type reliably exists as an Instagram template, because of the 3-clip rule. The other two you rebuild by hand, which takes minutes once the beats are written down. Copy these:

Talking head (about 20 to 40 seconds)
0-2s Hook, said to camera and shown as text
2-8s Who this is for and why it matters now
8-25s Three points. One cut and one on-screen label per point
25-30s The payoff, then one next step
Check Does the first line work with the sound off?
Transition (about 7 to 15 seconds)
Clip 1 The "before". Hold it for 1 to 2 seconds
Clips 2-5 Half a second to a second each, cut on the beat
Keep the framing identical between clips
Last clip The "after". Hold it long enough to register
Text One line, top of the safe area, up the whole time
Text on screen (about 6 to 12 seconds)
Video One steady clip or a clean loop
0-3s Line 1: the hook as a complete sentence
3-8s Line 2: the answer, or the headline of a list
Caption Carries the detail the screen cannot
Check Can it be read twice before the reel loops?

The hook line is the part no template supplies. Our Instagram hooks guide has the patterns, and Reels text overlay has the safe zones and the read-twice rule the beat sheets lean on.

Reels templates 2026: what changed with Edits

Templates started as a feature of the Instagram app. Since 2025 the newer work has gone into Edits, Instagram's standalone editor, and the two now behave differently.

Reel templates, 2022 to 2026
  1. Jul 2022
    Templates arrive in Reels

Copy the format and audio of any reel with three or more segments.

  2. Apr 2025
    Edits launches

Instagram's standalone editor, exporting with no added watermark.

  3. Dec 2025
    Templates in Edits

Meta updates its Edits announcement: templates for making videos quickly with popular music.

  4. Aug 2026
    Overlays and locked clips

Edits templates can carry overlays, and a locked clip stays in place for everyone who reuses the template.

  5. Oct 2026
    Where things stand

Templates made in Edits can only be reused in Edits. The Template Browser in Instagram still works as above.

The practical difference: an Instagram template gives you music and timing, and an Edits template can give you most of an edit. That extra power comes with a string attached.

Use a template as a structure, not a copy

A template hands you timing that already worked once. It does not hand you a reason for anyone to watch your version. Instagram's creator FAQ says original content gets "the best reach and distribution", and a reel that matches a hundred others clip for clip is original in name only.

Same template, two results
Used as a copy
  • Same cuts, same text, same joke as the original
  • Filler clips chosen to fill the slots
  • Template text left in, in someone else's voice
  • Another app's logo clip still on the end
  • Posted without checking the safe zones
Used as a structure
  • Your footage and your point on borrowed timing
  • Strongest clip moved to the first slot
  • Text rewritten as your own hook
  • Built in Instagram or Edits, or exported clean
  • Watched on a phone, muted, before sharing

Templates solve timing. The first line and the script are still yours to write, and that is where Instagram Ignited goes deeper: 20 fill-in-the-blank hook templates, a 3-act script template and the CapCut editing workflow.

Make your own template in Edits

Once a format works for you twice, turn it into a template so the third reel takes minutes.

  1. Build the video in Edits and export it to Instagram.
  2. Switch on Share as template on the share screen. You choose this each time you export.
  3. Decide what others can reuse. In Template settings you can allow up to 10 specific clips to be reused. Since August 2026 you can also lock a clip so it stays in place.
  4. Share. Expected result: your username appears on the template and on reels made from it.

To withdraw it later, open the published reel and tap Turn off reuse and template. That makes the template unavailable to other creators and takes your username off reels already made with it. Deleting the template outright deletes those reels, so use the first option unless you mean it.

Before you share a template reel
  • Every clip is yours, and the strongest one opens the reel
  • Any template text has been rewritten as your own hook
  • Text sits inside the safe centre, clear of the caption and buttons
  • No logo, watermark or ending clip from another app
  • Music comes from Instagram's library or is your own audio
  • Caption and cover are written for this reel, not left blank
  • If it is built on someone else's Edits template, you can live without it
  • Watched once muted on a phone before sharing

If the reel is new territory for your account, post it as a trial first. The trial reels strategy guide explains how to test a format with non-followers before your followers see it.

Instagram reel templates: FAQ

What are Instagram reel templates?

A reel template is the structure of an existing reel that you can reuse. Instagram's Help Center says templates let you use the same music and timing as the original reel and replace the photos or video clips with your own. Only reels that include music and at least 3 clips are available as templates. Checked October 2026.

How do I use Instagram reel templates?

Tap Create, choose Reel, then tap Templates. Swipe through the Template Browser and tap a template, tap Add media, and pick your photos or videos in the order they should appear. Tap Next, replace any clip that does not work with Replace media, then tap Next again to preview and share. You can also tap Template by on a reel, then Use template.

Where do I find Instagram reel templates?

In three places inside Instagram's own apps: the Template Browser under Create, Reel, Templates; any reel showing a Template by label; and Edits, where creators share templates built in that app. Outside Instagram, CapCut has a Template tab with keyword search and Canva lists Reels templates on its site. For your niche, search the niche on Instagram and look for reels with the Template by label.

Why can't I see the Use template option on a reel?

Not every reel can be used as a template. Instagram only offers templates for reels that include music and at least 3 clips, and creators who share templates from Edits can turn reuse off. If the option is missing on reels that should qualify, update the app and check on a phone: the Help Center says saving templates is not available on computers.

Are Instagram reel templates free?

The templates inside Instagram and Edits are built-in features with no price attached. CapCut has both free and paid templates, and its help center explains how to view and buy the paid ones. Canva describes its Reels templates as free video templates. Whatever you use, check the export for a logo or ending clip before posting it to Instagram.

Do reel templates hurt reach?

Instagram has published nothing saying template reels are ranked differently, up or down. What it does say is that original content gets the best reach, and that reels with watermarks or logos are shown less often. A template filled with your own footage and your own hook is your content in a borrowed structure. A template exported with another app's logo on it is a watermark problem.

Can I make my own Instagram reel template?

Yes, through Edits. Build the video in Edits, export it to Instagram, and switch on Share as template before you share the reel. You can allow up to 10 specific clips to be reused, and since August 2026 you can add overlays and lock clips in place. Your username appears on the template and on reels made from it.
