How it works
ChatGPT is a product, not a single model. OpenAI runs a family of models behind it and replaces them regularly, which is why advice tied to one model name goes stale quickly. In a conversation, everything you have written so far is sent to the model, which generates a reply one piece at a time. It can write, summarize, translate, explain, plan and work with code.
Around the chat itself OpenAI has added tools, and which ones you get depends on your plan and your region. Features that have shipped in the product include web search, file and image upload, image generation, voice conversation and saved instructions. The product changes often, so treat any feature list, including this one, as something to confirm in the app.
Creators use ChatGPT for first drafts of captions and scripts, for turning a transcript into posts, for brainstorming angles and for explaining tools they are learning. The same models are available to developers through the OpenAI API, which is how they end up inside automation workflows. Like any language model, ChatGPT can state false things confidently, so facts, quotes, prices and anything legal need checking against a real source before you publish.
A worked example
A creator has a 2,000-word blog post and wants five short video scripts from it.
- Paste the post and ask for five scripts of about 45 seconds, each built on one idea from the post.
- Add constraints: spoken language, a hook in the first sentence, and no claims that are not in the post.
- Read each script against the post. One includes a statistic the post never mentioned, so that script is dropped.
- Ask for the two weakest to be rewritten with a different opening, then record the ones you like.
An illustration, not a real account. Any numbers in it are made up to show the method, and are not benchmarks.
Common mistakes
- Publishing its facts unchecked. It can invent quotes, numbers and sources.
- Relying on advice tied to a model name. The lineup changes, so check what the app offers now.
- Pasting private or client data without checking your data settings and the terms of your plan.
Questions people ask
Who makes ChatGPT?
OpenAI. The same company offers its models to developers through the OpenAI API.
Is ChatGPT free?
Plan names, limits, models and prices change often. OpenAI's pricing page shows what is offered today, including whether free access is available where you live.
Is ChatGPT the same as GPT?
No. GPT is the name OpenAI gives its model family. ChatGPT is the assistant product built on those models, and the model names behind it change over time.
