How it works
The name covers two things. Claude is the assistant you chat with on the web, on desktop and on mobile, and it is also the set of models that developers reach through Anthropic's API. Anthropic releases the models in tiers that trade capability against speed and cost, and it replaces them regularly, so a model name in an older article may no longer be current.
In use it works like other assistants. You write a request, attach files or images if needed, and the model replies. People use it for long documents, writing, analysis and coding. Anthropic also makes Claude Code, a tool that lets the model work inside a software project by reading files, running commands and making changes with your approval.
Creators meet Claude as an alternative or companion to ChatGPT and Gemini for drafting and editing, for working through long transcripts or contracts, and as the model inside automations and custom tools. It has the same core limit as every language model: it can be wrong in a confident voice. Check facts, quotes and figures against a source, and read your plan's data terms before you paste in anything private.
A worked example
A creator receives a 14-page brand contract and wants to understand it before a call.
- Upload the contract and ask for a plain-language summary of what each side must do, with clause numbers.
- Ask a second question: which clauses limit how I can reuse the content, and for how long?
- Open the contract at each clause the answer cites and read the original wording.
- Take the list of questions to a lawyer or to the brand. The summary speeds up the reading. It is not legal advice.

Common mistakes
- Quoting limits or prices from an old post. Model names, context windows and pricing change. Anthropic's documentation has the current figures.
- Confusing Claude with Claude Code. Claude is the assistant and model family. Claude Code is a coding tool built on it.
- Treating a summary of a contract or policy as the document. Always read the clauses that matter.
