How it works
Like other assistants, Gemini is both a product and a set of models. The product is the Gemini app, which Google previously called Bard. The models are offered to developers through the Gemini API, in tiers that trade capability for speed and cost. Google updates the lineup often, so a model name from an older article may have been replaced.
Two things set Gemini apart in everyday use. It is multimodal, meaning that a single request can mix text with images, audio or video. And it is built into Google's own products, so it appears inside tools many people already use, such as Gmail and Docs. Google's page for the app also lists features such as image generation, video generation and a research mode. What you get depends on your plan and your country.
Creators meet Gemini when they want an assistant that can look at a screenshot or a clip and comment on it, when they work mainly in Google's apps, or when they build with the API. The usual cautions apply. It can be wrong, it can describe an image inaccurately, and its features and limits change. Check anything factual before you publish it.
A worked example
A creator wants to understand why last month's posts did worse, using a screenshot of the analytics screen.
- Upload the screenshot and ask the assistant to read the numbers into a table.
- Check the table against the screenshot. One figure was misread, and it is corrected by hand.
- Ask which three posts were shared most and what they have in common.
- Treat the answer as a hypothesis to test next month, not as a finding.
An illustration, not a real account. Any numbers in it are made up to show the method, and are not benchmarks.
Common mistakes
- Still calling it Bard. Google renamed Bard to Gemini.
- Trusting numbers read from an image without checking them. Misread digits are common.
- Assuming every feature is in every plan or country. Check what your own account shows.
Questions people ask
Is Gemini the same as Bard?
Yes. Google announced that Bard would be known as Gemini. The announcement is linked in the sources on this page.
What does multimodal mean?
It means the model can take in more than text. You can give it an image, audio or video along with your question, and it can respond about all of them.
Should I use Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude?
All three are capable. Gemini is the natural pick if you work mostly in Google's apps. Otherwise test each on your own tasks, because the lead changes with new releases.
