PPVPay-Per-View

PPV, short for pay-per-view, is a post or message on a subscription platform that a fan pays once to unlock, on top of or instead of the monthly subscription price.

How it works

A subscription gives a fan access to a creator's page for a month. A pay-per-view item is sold separately. The creator attaches a price to a single post or to a message sent in the platform's inbox, the fan sees that something is locked and what it costs, and paying unlocks that one item for that fan. Platforms also call it pay to unlock or a paid message.

The platform sets the lowest and highest price a creator can charge and takes its usual share of each unlock, the same way it does on subscriptions. Some creators run a free page and sell everything this way. Others keep a paid subscription and use pay-per-view for occasional extras. Because each unlock is a separate decision by the fan, the income is less regular than subscription income.

Pay-per-view is a pricing mechanism, and the platform's content rules apply to a locked item exactly as they do to a public post. On platforms that host adult content the creator and the fan are both adults, and the account owner has passed an identity check. For an AI persona the same three rules hold inside a paid message as anywhere else: the persona is a fictional adult who reads as an adult, it never uses a real person's face, name or likeness without written permission, and it is disclosed as AI where the platform or the law requires it. A message must not claim that the persona is a real person.

A worked example

A creator works out one month on paper, using made-up numbers, to see how pay-per-view adds to a subscription.

  1. Subscriptions: 100 subscribers at $10 a month is $1,000 gross.
  2. Pay-per-view: she sends one locked message priced at $15 and 20 subscribers unlock it, which is 20 x $15 = $300 gross.
  3. Total gross for the month is $1,300. If the platform keeps 20 percent, her share is $1,300 x 0.80 = $1,040.
  4. Tools, tax and her own hours come out of that. The sum shows the method only and says nothing about what any account earns.

An illustration, not a real account. Any numbers in it are made up to show the method, and are not benchmarks.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a locked message as outside the content policy. Moderation covers paid messages too.
  • Describing a locked item as something it is not. Misleading descriptions lead to refunds, disputes and account action.
  • Letting an AI persona claim to be a real person in paid messages.
  • Planning on pay-per-view income as if it were as steady as subscriptions.

Questions people ask

What does PPV mean on a subscription platform?

It means pay-per-view: a single post or message with its own price that a fan pays once to unlock. It is sold separately from the monthly subscription.

How much can a creator charge for a PPV post?

Each platform sets its own lowest and highest price. One platform's published range is in the sources on this page with the date it was read. Check the help centre of the platform you use.

Does the platform take a cut of PPV sales?

Yes. A platform normally applies the same share to pay-per-view sales, tips and subscriptions. The rate is set in its terms, and one published example is in the sources on this page.
