Canva's AI video generator is three tools. Create a video clip, which Canva says runs on Google's Veo 3, makes 8-second clips with sound from a prompt, on Pro and higher plans only. Image to Video animates a still into a 5-second silent clip and works on the Free plan while its 20 monthly AI uses last. Every limit here was read on Canva's own pages on 16 October 2026; we did not test output quality.
Canva's AI video generator is the Create a video clip tool in Canva AI, which Canva says is powered by Google's Veo 3 and makes 8-second clips with sound, or 6-second clips without, from a text prompt. It is included on Pro and higher plans and unavailable on Canva Free, where the AI video option is Image to Video: a 5-second silent animation of a still. Both count against a monthly AI allowance, and neither makes a long video in one go.
Based on Canva's own pages, checked October 2026 (16 October): the AI video generator page, the help pages for Create a video clip, Image to Video, Magic Media and AI usage, and the pricing page. We have not generated clips with it, so this covers what it does and costs, not how good the output looks.

What is Canva's AI video generator today?
It is three tools with different jobs, and the name on Canva's marketing page covers only the first. Knowing which one you are in tells you the clip length, whether there is sound and what it costs.
| Tool | Where it is | Model | Clip length | Plans and tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Create a video clip | Canva AI on the homepage | Google's Veo 3 (per Canva's feature page) | 8 s with audio, or 6 s without | Pro, Teams, Business, Enterprise, Nonprofit. Ultra AI tier |
| Image to Video | Editor: select an image, Edit, Tools | Not named | Fixed 5 s (some 3 s), no audio | Free while allowance lasts, and paid plans. Premium AI tier |
| Magic Media text to video | Magic Media app in the editor | Not named | 4 s | Counts toward AI usage. Plans not stated on the page |

How to make a video with Canva's AI video generator
The clip tool lives on the homepage, not inside a video design. Canva's help page says "Canva AI isn't available yet for video designs in the editor", so you generate first and edit second.
- 1Open Canva AI from the homepage
Choose Video clip from the options. On a Free account it shows as a paid feature.
- 2Describe one shot in English
Prompts are English only. Name the subject, the action, the setting, the camera and the light.
- 3Add a reference image if you have one
Optional. It guides the style or composition of the clip.
- 4Accept or skip the suggested enhancements
Canva AI may suggest additions such as pastel tones or cinematic effects. Each changes the shot, so read them first.
- 5Wait up to two minutes
Canva says a clip can take that long to appear. It saves generated videos automatically.
- 6Download or open it in the editor
Use the download icon, or Use Canva Editor to trim, add text and add music around it.
Expect each prompt to give one clip. Canva's feature page says one video is generated per prompt, so a miss costs a whole generation. Settle the shot before you press generate. Our image-to-video guide covers writing one-action prompts that read well in a few seconds.
Animating a still with Image to Video
Select an image in a design, choose Edit, then Image to Video under Tools. Smart applies motion for you; Custom takes a description of the movement. The help page lists the limits: clips are fixed at 5 seconds (some come out at 3), there is no audio, the image must be at least 256 by 224 pixels with an aspect ratio no wider than 5:1, transparent backgrounds and premium stock are not supported, and face animation is only partly supported. The tool is not available in China.
Is Canva's AI video generator free, and what are the limits?
The Veo clip tool is not free, and every AI tool draws on one monthly allowance. The pricing page marks "Create a video with Canva AI" as an Ultra AI tool, unavailable on Free, and "Turn images into videos" as a Premium AI tool included on Free. The AI usage page gives the ranges below.
| Plan | Price | Premium AI uses a month | Ultra AI (video clip) | Allowance resets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | Up to 20 Standard or Premium uses | Unavailable | 12:00 a.m. UTC on the first of each month |
| Pro | US$120 a year, one person | Up to 200 Premium uses (Standard uses no allowance) | Up to 20 uses, shared with Premium | Your billing date |
| Business | US$210 a year per person | Up to 400 Premium uses | Up to 40 uses, shared with Premium | Your billing date |
Sources: Canva pricing and Understanding your AI usage, checked October 2026. Prices are the US yearly prices shown on the pricing page. Teams and Nonprofits share the Pro ranges; Enterprise shares the Business ranges. Each member of a team has their own allowance.
Read the numbers as ceilings. Canva says the ranges assume simple prompts and the lowest-cost tool in each tier, and that advanced use "typically lands at the lower end", so a Pro account should not plan on 20 video clips a month. It publishes no per-clip rate. You can see what you have used under Settings, Billing, AI usage.
When you run out, the quality-tier page says Free accounts lose every tier until the reset, while paid accounts keep Standard tools and may see Premium paused. The AI usage page adds that Ultra tools are unavailable until the reset. The way to more is AI Pass, an add-on with its own price for Pro, Teams, Business and Nonprofit accounts.
What Canva's AI video is good and bad for
It is built for the person who is already making the design. The clip lands next to Canva's templates, text, music and resizing, and that is the whole case for using it over a dedicated generator.
- A moving background or B-roll shot under text in a social post or ad
- A short establishing shot to open a presentation or Reel
- Bringing an existing product photo or illustration to life (Image to Video)
- Teams already on Canva Pro who want one tool and one bill
- Resizing one clip into several formats inside the same design
- Anything longer than 8 seconds in one shot
- Volume: the monthly allowance is shared with every other AI tool
- Choosing the model, resolution or seed for a repeatable look
- Prompts in languages other than English
- Replacing the generated audio on a clip made with sound
For a recurring AI character, a short clip tool is the last step, not the first. The character's look comes from consistent stills, and the motion comes after. That pipeline, from character design to image-to-video in Kling and Runway, is what the AI Influencers program teaches.
Canva vs dedicated AI video generators
Canva wins on convenience and loses on control and volume. If clips are the product, not one layer in a design, a dedicated generator gives more seconds for the money and a choice of models.
| Tool | Models | Clip length | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canva (Pro) | Veo 3 for clips with sound | 8 s with audio, 6 s without | Share of up to 20 Ultra uses a month on Pro | Clips land in a Canva design with templates, text and music |
| Canva (Free) | Image to Video only | 5 s, no audio | Up to 20 Standard or Premium uses a month | Animating a still you already have |
| Google Flow (no subscription) | Veo 3.1 Lite, Fast and Quality; Gemini Omni Flash | Veo 3.1: 4, 6 or 8 s. Omni Flash: up to 10 s | 50 credits a day. Veo 3.1 Lite costs 10, Quality 100 | Free daily Veo clips. No 1080p upscale for non-subscribers |
| Runway Standard | Gen-4.5, Kling 3.0 and others | Per credit: Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits a second | 625 credits a month, about 52 s of Gen-4.5 | Choosing among models; extra credits can be bought |
Sources: Canva's pricing, AI usage and video clip pages; Google's Flow credits page; Runway's pricing and Free plan details. All checked October 2026. Runway Standard is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly; its Free plan is 125 credits once, with a watermark.
Google Flow is the closest like-for-like, since it runs Google's newer Veo 3.1 models. Its credits page gives accounts without a subscription 50 credits a day; a Veo 3.1 Lite clip of 4, 6 or 8 seconds costs 10 and Veo 3.1 Quality costs 100. During peak hours, roughly 2 PM to 5 PM UTC, Google says non-subscribers may not be able to generate video. Rights, moderation and labels
Canva's FAQ says "you can use the designs generated with Canva AI for any purpose", provided you follow its AI Product Terms and Acceptable Use Policy. The same answer says "you may not have exclusive rights to your AI-generated designs", that Canva does not promise output is cleared for use, and that checking a design is suitable for commercial use is your job. Canva blocks inappropriate prompts and moderates content.
Labelling rules for realistic AI video on Instagram are in our Instagram AI label guide.
Common problems and what they mean
Most failures trace back to the allowance or to an input the tool does not take. Canva's help pages explain each of these.
- The AI options are greyed out. You have hit the monthly limit. On Free, every tier waits for the reset on the first of the month; on a paid plan, Standard tools keep working.
- Video clip asks you to upgrade. The Veo tool is an Ultra AI tool, and Ultra is unavailable on Free and on a Pro trial.
- No clip appears. Canva says to wait up to two minutes before assuming it failed. Finished clips are saved automatically.
- The prompt is refused. Canva blocks prompts it judges inappropriate, and prompts must be in English.
- Image to Video will not take your picture. Check the size (at least 256 by 224 pixels), the aspect ratio (no wider than 5:1) and the background (no transparency). Premium stock images are not supported.
- A face moves oddly. Canva says face animation is only partly supported in Image to Video. Pick a still where the face is small in frame, or move the camera instead of the subject.
Canva AI video generator: FAQ
What model powers Canva's AI video generator?
Canva's AI video generator page says its Create a video clip tool is powered by Google's Veo 3. The help page for the tool does not name a model, and Canva's Image to Video and Magic Media video tools do not name theirs either. Read on Canva's pages on 16 October 2026.
Is Canva AI video free?
Partly. Create a video clip, the Veo tool with sound, is marked unavailable on Canva Free and included on Pro and higher plans. Image to Video works on the Free plan while monthly AI allowance remains: Free accounts get up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month, resetting at midnight UTC on the first. Checked October 2026.
How long are Canva AI videos?
Create a video clip makes 8-second clips with audio or 6-second clips without. Image to Video makes fixed 5-second clips, with some generations coming out at 3 seconds, and no audio. Magic Media text to video makes 4-second clips. For anything longer, put several clips on a timeline in the Canva editor.
How many AI videos can I make on Canva Pro?
Canva does not publish a per-video number. Create a video clip is an Ultra AI tool, and Pro, Teams and Nonprofit accounts get up to 200 Premium uses or up to 20 Ultra uses a month from one shared allowance. Canva says those ranges assume simple tasks and the cheapest tool in a tier, so video can use more. Checked October 2026.
Can I use Canva AI videos commercially?
Canva says you can use designs generated with Canva AI for any purpose if you follow its AI Product Terms and Acceptable Use Policy. It also says you may not have exclusive rights to AI output, that it does not promise output is cleared for use, and that checking suitability for commercial use is your responsibility.
Is Canva better than a dedicated AI video generator?
For a short clip that goes straight into a Canva design, often yes, because you skip downloading and re-uploading. For volume, longer shots, 1080p control or choosing your model, a dedicated tool fits better. Google Flow gives 50 free credits a day for Veo 3.1 clips, and Runway sells monthly credit plans.
