Instagram stories can be up to 60 seconds per clip. Videos longer than that are split into multiple clips you can trim. Stories stay up for 24 hours, then disappear from your profile and the tray unless you add them to a highlight; a private copy is kept in your Stories Archive by default.
How long can Instagram stories be? Each story video clip can be up to 60 seconds, and longer videos are automatically split into several clips that play one after another. Every story then stays up for 24 hours before disappearing from your profile and the story tray, unless you save it to a highlight. Those two limits, 60 seconds per clip and 24 hours on display, cover almost every question about story length.

How long can Instagram stories be when the video is longer than 60 seconds?
Instagram's help center says a video up to 60 seconds long appears as one clip. Anything longer is broken up into multiple clips, and you can adjust them with the video trimmer at the bottom of the editing screen. The help center notes the trimmer is currently only available on iOS devices.

Clips play in order
Viewers move through split clips the same way they move through separate stories, so each clip is a chance to tap away. If your video only works as one continuous piece, consider posting it as a Reel and sharing the Reel to your story instead. Our Instagram Reels guide covers that format.
60-second stories: planning content around the limit
- Quick updates and behind the scenes
- Polls, questions and quizzes
- Short tutorials in a few clips
- Links to a new post or product
- Countdowns and announcements
- One continuous video over 60 seconds
- Content you want on your profile long term
- Videos aimed at non-followers
- Polished edits with audio
- Evergreen tutorials
A simple rule of thumb: if a clip only makes sense with the next one, keep each clip complete on its own. Viewers who leave halfway through a split video still get something useful from the clips they watched.
How long stories stay up: 24 hours, highlights and archive
Instagram says stories disappear from your profile, Feed and Direct inbox after 24 hours unless you add them to your profile as story highlights. Highlights stay until you remove them. Separately, stories you share are saved to your Stories Archive, a private copy only you can see, and you can turn that off in settings.

Highlights turn short-lived stories into a permanent part of your profile. Our guides to highlight names and highlight covers show how to organise them.
Split stories or one Reel?
Instagram does not publish data comparing split story clips with a single Reel, so the choice comes down to what each format is for. Stories reach people who already follow you and check the story tray; they feel informal and disappear, which suits updates, polls and quick how-tos. Reels stay on your profile and can be shown to people who do not follow you yet, which suits content you want to keep working for you.
A practical pattern is to post the full video as a Reel, then share the Reel to your story with a short clip or sticker pointing to it. Followers see it in the tray, and the full version lives on your profile. If the content is time-sensitive, such as a live event or a same-day offer, keep it in stories and save the useful parts to a highlight afterwards.
Quick tips for story length
- Trim dead time at the start of each clip
- Make each 60-second clip stand on its own
- Add captions for viewers watching without sound
- Use a sticker or text to say how many clips follow
- Save keepers to a highlight before 24 hours pass

How long can Instagram stories be: FAQ
How long can an Instagram story video be?
Instagram's help center says a video up to 60 seconds long appears as one clip in your story. Longer videos are broken up into multiple clips, which you can edit with the video trimmer at the bottom of the screen. The help center notes the trimmer is currently only available on iOS. Checked October 2026.
How long do Instagram stories last?
Stories disappear from your profile, Feed and Direct inbox after 24 hours, according to Instagram's help center, unless you add them to your profile as story highlights. Stories you share are also saved to your private Stories Archive by default, which you can turn off in settings.
What happens if I upload a 3-minute video to my story?
Instagram splits videos longer than 60 seconds into multiple clips, so a 3-minute video becomes several story clips that play one after another. Viewers tap through them like separate stories. If you would rather post it as one continuous video, a Reel is usually the better format.
Can I make an Instagram story longer than 24 hours?
Not in the main story tray. After 24 hours a story leaves your profile, Feed and inbox. To keep it visible, add it to a highlight on your profile, where it stays until you remove it. Your archive keeps a private copy if Stories Archive is on.
Should I post a long video as a story or a Reel?
Use stories for quick, informal updates your current followers see in the tray, and split clips are fine there. Use a Reel for a single continuous video you want to keep on your profile and possibly reach people who do not follow you yet.
