Quick answer

Instagram Notes are 60-character status updates that sit at the top of the inbox and above your profile picture for up to 24 hours. Only followers you follow back, or your Close Friends who follow you back, can see one, and you see likes and replies but no viewer list. Below: the steps, the audience settings, music notes and 50 original note ideas.

Instagram Notes are short status updates of up to 60 characters that appear at the top of your inbox and above your profile picture for up to 24 hours. Only followers you follow back, or Close Friends who follow you back, can see a note, and they can like it or reply by direct message.

Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on sharing a note, interacting with notes, Spotify music notes and Close Friends, Instagram's Notes guide, and Meta's August 2025 feature update.

That audience rule is the part most guides skip, and it changes how you should use Notes. A note is not a broadcast to your followers. It is a message to the people you already have a two-way connection with, which makes it a conversation starter rather than a reach tool.

How Instagram Notes work now

One note, 60 characters, 24 hours. Everything else follows from those three limits, which come straight from Instagram's Help Center.

Instagram's Help Center has no article on video notes as of October 2026, so this page does not cover them. If your app offers a video or camera option in the note composer, it is a feature in limited rollout; check the screen you see rather than a third-party guide.

How to post a note on Instagram

Start from your inbox. The steps below follow Instagram's Help Center; the profile route opens the same composer.

Post an Instagram note
  1. 1
    Open your messages

Tap Messages. Your profile picture sits at the top of the inbox with a Note bubble above it.

  2. 2
    Tap Note

Or tap the bubble above your profile picture on your own profile.

  3. 3
    Type up to 60 characters

Text and emojis. Music is a separate option in the same composer.

  4. 4
    Pick the audience

Followers you follow back, or Close Friends.

  5. 5
    Tap Share

Top right. The note appears in the inbox and on your profile for up to 24 hours.

To change a note, tap it and choose Leave a new note. The new one replaces the old one. To delete a note, tap it and choose the delete option; Instagram says you can do this at any time.

To add music, tap Music in the composer, link Spotify if asked and share from Spotify. Instagram says the music note updates with what you are playing, and if you stop, it updates the next time you play within 30 minutes. You can still add up to 60 characters of text. Instagram notes that this feature is not available to everyone.

Who can see my Instagram notes?

Only the audience you pick, and both choices require a follow in each direction. Instagram's Help Center lists followers you follow back or your Close Friends; its blog calls the first group mutual followers.

Audience settingWho sees the noteUse it for
Followers you follow backAccounts that follow you and that you follow back (mutual followers)Day-to-day notes, questions, updates for regulars and collaborators
Close FriendsPeople on your Close Friends list who also follow you backPersonal notes, early news, a smaller test group
Not reachable with a noteFollowers you do not follow back, and anyone who does not follow youUse a story, post or reel for these people

Two consequences. First, a business or creator account with thousands of followers it does not follow back reaches very few of them with a note. Second, to keep a note away from a particular mutual, share it to Close Friends and leave them off the list. Instagram's Close Friends article says people are not notified when you add or remove them. Instagram also has a Help Center article on muting someone's notes if it is their notes you would rather not see.

Notes for conversation with people you know; stories for reach and anything visual.

If you want the viewer side of that comparison, our guide to Instagram story viewer lists covers who appears and for how long.

How long do Instagram notes last?

Up to 24 hours. Instagram's Help Center says that after 24 hours your note is no longer visible on Instagram. It comes down sooner if you delete it or post a new one, because you can only have one note at a time.

Notes from mutuals that carry a location can also appear on the Instagram Map for 24 hours, according to Meta's August 2025 announcement, which launched the map in the US first. Location sharing on the map is off unless you opt in.

Can you see who viewed your note?

No. You see who liked it and who replied, and nothing else. Instagram's Help Center says you can see a list of who liked your note by tapping it, and that only you can see who liked or replied.

Replies arrive as ordinary direct messages, so treat them like any DM. For a business, that means a reply to "Last 3 in medium" is a sales conversation; answer it quickly. Our Instagram call to action ideas have more endings that ask for one clear action.

Instagram note ideas: 50 lines to start with

Every line below fits in 60 characters and ends in something a person can answer. They are written for this page; change the details to match your week. Instagram's own Notes guide recommends the same approach: questions, quick updates and timely reminders.

Pick a note by goal and audience
Share an update
Ask a two-option question, request a recommendation, run a reply-with-one-word prompt
Ask for honest feedback on a draft or test an idea before posting it publicly
Start a conversation
Restocks, opening hours, a new post going up, where you will be this weekend
Early news, personal milestones, the thing you are not announcing to everyone yet
Followers you follow back
Close Friends

Note ideas for creators

Your mutuals are often other creators, collaborators and your most engaged followers. Use the note to start conversations you can turn into content.

  • Filming tomorrow. What should I answer on camera?
  • Reply with one word and I will make a reel about it
  • Drafting a carousel on hooks. What confuses you?
  • New reel up. Be honest: too long?
  • Which do you want first: tutorial or behind the scenes?
  • Testing a new posting time this week
  • Looking for a collab in the same niche. DM me
  • What should my next free guide cover?
  • Two takes recorded. Reply A or B
  • Editing day. Send me your favourite transition
  • Ask me anything about my setup for the next hour
  • Going live tonight at 8. Bring questions
  • Reading every reply today. Go
  • Hot take: most hooks are too slow
  • Building something new. Want early access?
  • What do you want less of on my page?
  • Studio is a mess. Content is not

Note ideas for small businesses

A business note reaches the accounts you follow back: regulars, local partners, suppliers and friends of the shop. Write for them, not for strangers.

  • Fresh batch out at 7am. First 12 go fast
  • Closed Monday. Back Tuesday with new stock
  • Restock landed. Reply for a hold until 5pm
  • Name our new flavour. Best reply wins it
  • Quiet morning. Walk-ins welcome until noon
  • Last 3 in medium. DM to reserve
  • Pop-up Saturday at the market, stall 14
  • Which colour should we bring back?
  • New menu board up. Ask for the off-menu one
  • Booking for next week opens tonight
  • Packing orders all day. Shipping Friday
  • Behind the counter: we are hiring weekends
  • Rainy day deal for anyone who mentions this note
  • Workshop seats left: 4. Reply for details
  • Thank you for a busy weekend. Restocking now
  • What should we stock that we do not?

Note ideas for friends

The original use. Short, current and easy to reply to, so a friend can start a chat without needing a reason.

  • Need a show to start tonight. Go
  • Who is up for coffee this week?
  • Rate my weekend plans: nothing, again
  • Best song you found this month?
  • Booked the trip. Tips welcome
  • Currently: pretending to read
  • Unpopular opinion: breakfast for dinner wins
  • Send me your most used emoji
  • First day at the new job. Wish me luck
  • Gym streak: day 3. Hold me to it
  • Lost my headphones. Again
  • Recommend one book. Just one
  • Cooking tonight. What should I make?
  • Back in town for the weekend
  • Who still owes me a playlist?
  • Mood: tea, rain, early night
  • Making plans. Reply if you are free Sunday

For more question formats, our Instagram poll ideas work as notes too when you trim them to 60 characters, and shops can pair a note with the longer sequences in Instagram story ideas for business.

Using notes as a creator or small business

Treat a note as a daily check-in with your inner circle, not a growth lever. The people who see it already know you, so the job is to give them a reason to message.

Before you share a note
  • Audience set on purpose: mutuals for regulars, Close Friends for early news
  • One idea only, inside 60 characters
  • An ending someone can answer in a word or two
  • Something true today: a note lasts 24 hours at most
  • Time to answer replies in the next few hours
  • No link: notes carry text or a Spotify track, so point people to your profile or a DM
  • Nothing you would mind a mutual screenshotting

Notes work best beside the rest of your account, not instead of it. The conversations they start feed your stories and reels, and the people who reply are usually the ones who buy. Our Instagram Ignited program goes deeper on that side in its Story Selling and Building a Cult lessons, which cover turning an engaged inner circle into customers.

Instagram notes not showing: quick checks

  • You cannot see a friend's note. You both need to follow each other, or they chose Close Friends and you are not on the list. They may also have deleted it, or 24 hours have passed.
  • A follower says they cannot see yours. Check that you follow them back. Notes do not reach one-way followers.
  • No Music option. Instagram says Spotify notes are not available to everyone. Update the app and check again later.
  • On a headset. Instagram says Notes are not available on Meta Quest devices.
  • A note crosses a line. Instagram has a Help Center route to report a note, linked from its notes articles.

Instagram Notes: FAQ

What are Instagram Notes?

Instagram Notes are short status updates of up to 60 characters. Instagram's Help Center says a note appears at the top of your inbox in Instagram messaging and above your profile picture on your profile, and that you can have one note at a time. People who see it can like it or reply, and replies arrive as direct messages. Checked October 2026.

Who can see my Instagram notes?

Only the audience you pick when you share it. Instagram offers two: followers you follow back, which Instagram's own blog calls mutual followers, or your Close Friends list, in which case Close Friends who follow you back can see it. A follower you do not follow back does not see your note, and neither does someone who does not follow you.

How long do Instagram notes last?

Up to 24 hours. Instagram's Help Center says your note shows at the top of the inbox and on your profile for up to 24 hours, after which it is no longer visible on Instagram. You can delete it sooner, and posting a new note replaces the current one, because you can only have one note shared at a time.

Can you see who viewed your note on Instagram?

No viewer list is documented. Instagram's Help Center says you can see who liked your note by tapping it, and that only you can see who liked or replied. Replies come in as direct messages. Nothing in the Help Center describes a list of people who saw a note without reacting, so treat likes and replies as the only signals you get.

How do I post a note on Instagram?

Open your messages, tap Note above your profile picture at the top of the inbox, type up to 60 characters, choose followers you follow back or Close Friends, then tap Share in the top right. You can also start from the bubble above your profile picture on your own profile. Each new note replaces the one you already had up.

How do I delete an Instagram note?

Tap your note at the top of your inbox or on your profile and choose the delete option. Instagram's Help Center and its blog both say you can delete a note at any time. If you only want to change the wording, tap Leave a new note instead: the new note replaces the old one and starts a fresh 24 hours.

Can I add music to an Instagram note?

Yes, through Spotify, though Instagram says the feature is not available to everyone. Tap Note, tap Music, link Spotify if asked, then share from Spotify. Instagram's blog says the note updates with what you are playing, and if you stop, it updates the next time you play within 30 minutes. Posting a new note replaces the Spotify one.
