Your Instagram QR code lives behind Share profile on your profile in the app, and under Settings, then QR code on a computer. Scan other codes from the same screen or with your phone's camera. For a post or reel, copy its link into any QR generator if your menu has no QR option, and test every print with two phones before you order a batch.
Your Instagram QR code is on your profile: tap Share profile below your bio and the code fills the screen, ready to customise, screenshot or show to someone. On a computer, click your profile picture, then Settings at the top of your profile, then QR code.
Checked October 2026 against Instagram's Help Center pages on finding and customising your profile QR code and scanning a QR code, its page on group chat QR invites, and Denso Wave's QR code sizing guide. Print sizes below are working guidance, not Instagram rules.
A QR code only does half the job. It gets someone to your profile; the profile has to make them follow or tap through. So before you print anything, make sure your bio says who you help and what to do next. Our Instagram bio templates cover that part.
Where to find your Instagram QR code
The code sits in the same place on iPhone and Android: your profile, then Share profile. Instagram's Help Center describes the same route for both apps and a separate Settings route on the web.
| Where you are | Path | Customising |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad app | Profile, then Share profile below your bio | Tap the screen or the top button: Color, Emoji or Selfie |
| Android app | Profile, then Share profile below your bio | Same options: Color, Emoji or Selfie |
| Computer (instagram.com) | Profile picture on the left, then Settings at the top, then QR code | Click a coloured circle to change the colour |
| Scanning another code | Profile, then Share profile, then the scan icon top right | App only; Instagram lists no computer route |
- 1Open your profile
Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- 2Tap Share profile
The button sits below your bio. The QR code fills the screen.
- 3Pick a look
Tap anywhere on the screen or the button at the top: Color cycles colours, Emoji builds a pattern from an emoji, Selfie adds a selfie sticker.
- 4Save or show it
Show the screen to the person in front of you, or take a screenshot and crop it to the code for print or slides.

A plain screenshot is enough for most uses. Crop it so the code keeps some empty space on every side; the section on printing explains why that margin matters.
How to scan an Instagram QR code
Open the same Share profile screen and tap the scan icon in the top right. Instagram's Help Center lists this for iPhone, iPad and Android, and says the feature is not available on computers.
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Share profile below your bio.
- Tap the scan icon in the top right.
- Hold your camera over the other code until it is captured. Their profile opens.
Most phone camera apps read standard QR codes on their own, which is how a customer who has never opened Instagram reaches your profile in a browser. That is the main reason a printed code is worth having: nobody needs to type your handle correctly.
QR code for an Instagram post or reel
The Help Center documents QR codes for profiles and for group chat invites. It does not document one for a single post or reel in October 2026. In August 2022 TechCrunch reported that Instagram added a QR option to the three-dot menu of posts, reels and locations, and that adding /qr to a post's web address made one, with Meta confirming the feature. Whether your app still shows it today is something only your menu can tell you.
The route that always works:
- Tap the three-dot menu above the post or reel and tap Copy link. On the web, open the post and copy the address from the browser bar.
- Paste the link into any QR code generator and download the code as a PNG or SVG.
- Scan it with two phones before you use it anywhere.
Instagram's post link article adds one limit: you can only get a link to posts shared publicly. A code pointing at a post on a private account opens a page most scanners cannot see.
- Free, two taps away in the app
- Opens your profile, nothing else
- Colour, emoji and selfie designs
- No scan count described in the Help Center
- Points at any link: a reel, a post, your link-in-bio page
- Plain black-on-white files print cleanly
- Dynamic codes can be re-pointed later, usually on a paid plan
- Some count scans, which tells you which placement works
Use Instagram's code for profile follows; use a generator when the scan should land on one specific post or page.
If you would rather send scanners to a menu of links than to your profile, point the code at your link-in-bio page instead. Our comparison of Linktree, Beacons and Stan Store covers which page fits a shop or a creator.
How to print an Instagram QR code so it scans
A QR code fails in print for three reasons: it is too small for the distance, it has no clear margin, or it has too little contrast. The first and last are judgement calls; the margin is part of the QR standard. Denso Wave, the company that invented the QR code, says a code requires a four-module wide margin on all sides, a module being one of the small squares.
- Crop with empty space on every side: at least four of the small squares wide
- Dark code on a light background, never the reverse, and no photo behind it
- Arm's-length items (cards, tags, menus): roughly 2 cm (0.8 in) wide or more, as guidance
- Posters and windows: scale up with distance, and test from where people will actually stand
- Plain or Color design for print; test emoji and selfie designs before trusting them
- Matte stock or paper where you can: gloss and laminate glare in shop lighting
- Your handle printed in text next to the code, for people who will not scan
- One line telling people why to scan: what they get by following
- Test the proof with two different phones, in the light where it will be used
The sizes are guidance from print practice, not an Instagram or QR standard rule. A code read at arm's length can be small; a code read across a room needs to be large, and the cheapest test is to tape a draft to the wall and scan it from where people will stand.
Instagram account QR code ideas for creators and local businesses
Put the code where people already have their phone out or are waiting. A counter, a queue and the end of a talk work; the back of a box nobody turns over does not.
| Placement | Read from | Size (guidance) | Put next to it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter or table card | Arm's length | About 2 to 3 cm wide or more | One line on what they get by following: daily specials, restock alerts |
| Packaging insert or swing tag | Hand-held | About 2 cm wide or more | The handle in text too, for people who will not scan |
| Business card | Hand-held | About 2 cm wide | Handle in text beside it |
| Shop window or poster | 1 to 3 metres | Large: 10 cm or more as a starting point | A short reason to scan, readable from the same distance |
| Event or talk slide | Across a room | A third of the slide height or more | Leave it up for the whole Q&A, not one slide |
| Menu or booklet | Hand-held | About 2 cm wide or more | Place it on a page people already read, not the back cover |
- 01They see a reason
One line next to the code: restock alerts, the recipe, the full tutorial.
- 02They scan
The code is big enough, high contrast and has its margin.
- 03Your profile loads
A clear name, photo and bio that match the place they just scanned.
- 04They act
Follow, tap the link in bio or send a message.
One exception for packaging: if the order came through a marketplace, read its rules first. Etsy's Off-Platform Transactions Policy names QR codes that direct members off Etsy, so an Etsy seller should leave the code out of the parcel; our Etsy vs Gumroad guide covers what that policy bans.
The weak step is usually the third. If the bio is vague or full, a scan becomes a bounce. Keep it within the 150-character bio limit and make the first line say what the account is for. Shops will find placement ideas in our coffee shop Instagram ideas and the wider small business growth playbook. Profile setup is also where our Instagram Ignited program starts, with a lesson on profile optimisation before any content work.
Instagram QR code not working: quick fixes
- It will not scan at all. Check the margin first, then contrast. A code cropped tight to its edges or printed on a patterned background is the usual cause.
- It scans on one phone only. It is too small or too glossy for older cameras. Print it larger, on matte stock.
- It opens the wrong page. You may have changed your username since printing, or used a link copied from someone else's share. Make a fresh code and scan it before reprinting.
- No Share profile button. Update the app and look again below your bio. On a computer the code is under Settings, then QR code, not on the profile itself.
- You cannot scan on a computer. Instagram lists no computer route for scanning. Use your phone.
Instagram QR code: FAQ
Where is my Instagram QR code?
In the Instagram app, go to your profile and tap Share profile below your bio. The screen that opens is your profile QR code, and you can tap it to change its colour or switch to an emoji or selfie design. On a computer, click your profile picture, click Settings at the top of your profile, then click QR code. Checked October 2026 on Instagram's Help Center.
How do I scan an Instagram QR code?
Inside Instagram, go to your profile, tap Share profile, tap the scan icon in the top right and hold your camera over the other code until it is captured. Instagram's Help Center lists this for iPhone, iPad and Android, not for computers. Most phone camera apps also read standard QR codes, which opens the profile link without going through the app first.
Can I make a QR code for an Instagram post or reel?
In August 2022 TechCrunch reported that Instagram added a QR option to the three-dot menu of posts, reels and locations, with a Meta spokesperson confirming it. Instagram's Help Center does not document that option in October 2026. If your menu does not show it, use Copy link from the post's three-dot menu and turn the link into a code with any QR generator.
Can someone log in to my Instagram account with my QR code?
No. Instagram's Help Center states that you cannot log in to Instagram with a QR code. Your profile code only opens your public profile page. Treat any message asking you to scan a code to verify, unlock or recover your account as a phishing attempt, and use the official recovery routes in the app or on instagram.com instead.
What size should I print an Instagram QR code?
Instagram publishes no print size. As working guidance, keep a code at least about 2 cm (0.8 in) wide for something read at arm's length, such as a counter card or business card, and scale it up for anything read from across a room. Leave clear space around it, print dark on light, and test the final print with two phones before ordering a batch.
Will my Instagram QR code still work if I change my username?
Instagram does not say whether its profile code survives a username change, and a generator code made from your profile link will break once the link changes. The safe habit is to scan one printed copy after any rename. If it no longer opens your profile, make a fresh code and reprint before the old stock goes out again.
