Method: we opened each public profile on instagram.com on 16 October 2026 (UTC) and recorded the follower count it displayed, which Instagram abbreviates to millions. We used Wikipedia's List of most-followed Instagram accounts, dated September 2026 and citing Social Blade, to find the candidates and to compare. Social Blade's own ranking page refused our request, so we did not use it. Counts change daily; open a profile for its current number.

Leaving out Instagram's own account, Nike, with 291 million. National Geographic, with 268 million, is the only other brand in the top 20. Wikipedia marks those three as brand accounts. The biggest club is Real Madrid, which showed 181 million on 16 October, 23rd in Wikipedia's order.

Why sites disagree on these numbers
If another page gives different figures, it is usually not wrong, just measured differently. Four things move the numbers:
- Date. A list written in spring is months out of date by autumn. Always look for the day a count was read.
- Rounding. Instagram abbreviates big counts, so 381M on two profiles can hide a gap of almost a million. Wikipedia rounds down to the nearest million, which is why some of its figures sit one below ours.
- Missing profiles. An account that is deactivated, renamed or not loading drops out of a live read. @nickiminaj returned no count for us; Justin Bieber's account is now @lilbieber, and @justinbieber returned nothing.
- What counts as an account. Some lists leave out brands or Instagram's own profile, which moves Ronaldo to first and pushes everyone else up a place.
