An Etsy listing video for digital products is a silent clip of 5 to 15 seconds, usually a screen recording of the PDF, planner or template being scrolled or edited. Etsy says videos help shoppers understand products and can help listings appear in search, but it publishes no sales figure, so treat video as a cheap test. Record once per product, crop to match your first photo and export MP4 at 1080px or more.
An Etsy listing video for digital products is a silent 5 to 15 second clip, and the easiest one to make is a screen recording of your file being flipped through or edited. Etsy says listing videos give shoppers a better idea of your products and can help how your listings appear in Etsy search, so a short walkthrough is worth adding to any digital listing that already has good photos.
Specs checked in October 2026 against Etsy Help, How to Add Listing Videos, and the Etsy Seller Handbook article How to Take Listing Videos With Your Smartphone. Etsy updates these pages; check them before you batch-produce videos.
Almost everything written about Etsy video assumes a physical product: a mug turning on a table, a necklace on a model. Digital sellers have a different problem and an easier solution. Nobody needs to see the texture of a PDF, but buyers do want to know what is inside, how many pages there are, and whether the editable version is really editable. A screen recording answers all three. Video is one channel in a bigger listing and marketing plan; our digital product marketing playbook maps the rest.
What are the Etsy listing video specs?
Here is what Etsy's own pages say. Two pages disagree slightly on the minimum length; aim for 5 to 15 seconds and you satisfy both.
| Spec | Etsy says | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Videos per listing | Up to 2 | Help: How to Add Listing Videos |
| Length | 3 to 15 seconds (help); 5 to 15 seconds (handbook) | Help and Seller Handbook |
| Maximum file size | 100MB | Help: How to Add Listing Videos |
| File types | MP4, MOV, FLV, AAC, AVI, 3GP, MPEG | Help: How to Add Listing Videos |
| Resolution | Minimum 500px, ideally at least 1080px | Help: How to Add Listing Videos |
| Audio | Removed on upload | Help and Seller Handbook |
| Over-length videos | Clipped to 15 seconds | Seller Handbook |
Aspect ratio needs care. The help page states the video aspect ratio should be 2:1 or 1:2, while the Seller Handbook advises matching the orientation of your primary listing photo so the listing looks consistent, and warns that a phone's default 9:16 portrait video can be hard to view on some screens. For a screen recording, the practical answer is to crop to the same orientation as your first photo, upload, and check the preview on desktop and in the app before you publish.
Do Etsy videos increase sales? An honest evidence review
Short answer: nobody outside Etsy has published reliable numbers for digital products, and Etsy does not publish a sales figure either. Here is what the evidence actually supports.
- What Etsy says about search. Its help center says listing videos "can also help improve how your listings appear in Etsy search". That is a statement about visibility, not a promise of sales.
- What Etsy says about buyers. The Seller Handbook article on listing videos shoppers love cites a 2018 study of Etsy buyers that found product video adds transparency and builds trust, because it shows information photos cannot.
- What is missing. No public, independent test isolates the effect of video on digital download conversion. Seller forum posts go both ways and rarely control for other changes made at the same time.
So treat video as a low-cost experiment rather than a fix. A 15-second screen recording takes minutes once you have a routine. If a listing already gets views but few sales, video is one of the cheapest changes you can test. If it gets no views, video will not fix that alone; start with titles and tags, covered in our Etsy title tips.
- Scale and size in the hand
- Texture, shine and material
- Movement and drape
- Wear or flaws on vintage
- How many pages are inside
- The layout of inner pages
- That editable fields really edit
- How a template looks on a real screen
What video changes for digital listings
Still images of a digital product share a weakness: they are all curated. A buyer sees the best five pages and wonders about the other forty. Video changes that in three ways.
- It proves volume. A fast scroll through a 100-page planner communicates size better than a "100 pages" badge.
- It proves function. Watching a cursor type a name into an editable label answers the most common pre-sale question for templates.
- It sets expectations. Showing the file in the software it needs (a PDF reader, a note-taking app, Canva, a spreadsheet) reduces the "I cannot open this" messages after purchase.
Etsy video tutorial for digital products: the 15-second spec
This is the structure we use for digital listings. It fits in 15 seconds with no audio and works for PDFs, planners, printables and templates.
- 0 to 2 sCover or hero page
The same visual as your first listing photo, with the product name on screen.
- 2 to 8 sFlip-through
Scroll or page through the inside at a steady pace, pausing on the two best pages.
- 8 to 12 sProof of function
A hyperlink tap in a planner, typing into an editable field, or a template color change.
- 12 to 15 sEnd frame
What is included in one line: page count, sizes or formats, and the software needed.
A planning template for silent screen recordings. Timings are suggestions, not Etsy requirements.
- 1Prepare the file
Open the product at a zoom level where text is readable. Close notifications and other windows.
- 2Set the recording area
Record only the document area, roughly matching the shape of your first listing photo.
- 3Record two or three takes
Use your computer or tablet screen recorder. Move the cursor slowly and deliberately.
- 4Trim to 15 seconds or less
Cut dead time at the start and end. Etsy clips anything longer.
- 5Add short text overlays
Two or three words each, on screen for long enough to read. No audio will play.
- 6Export and upload
MP4 at 1080px or more, under 100MB. Upload in Photo and video, then check the preview.
What to record for each type of digital product
| Product | What to show in the video | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Printable PDF set | Flip-through of every page type, then a printed page if you have one | Tiny text at full-page zoom; zoom in on the best page |
| Digital planner | Tapping tabs and hyperlinks, writing on a page in a note app | Showing an app the buyer may not have without saying so |
| Canva template | Changing text, photo and color in the editor | Showing Canva Pro elements the buyer may not have access to |
| Spreadsheet template | Entering a number and watching totals and charts update | Exposing real personal or client data |
| Wall art printable | A mockup slideshow of the print on different walls | Implying a physical print ships; say "digital download" on screen |
For the wall art row, the clip is usually a slideshow of mockups rather than a screen recording. If you make those in Canva, our tutorial on creating mockups in Canva for Etsy covers the template; export the mockups and stitch them into a short clip.

Compare views and orders before and after
Measuring matters because Etsy will not tell you the effect for your shop. Note the date you add a video, change nothing else on that listing for a few weeks, and compare its views, favorites and orders against the same length of time before. Our explainer on the Etsy stats dashboard shows where those numbers live. One listing is a weak sample; if you sell many similar products, add videos to half of them first and compare the two groups.
If you want the full system for building and listing digital products, from product choice to launch, our Digital Products program covers each step, including how to plan listing images and video together.
Which listings should get a video first?
If you have a large catalog, do not try to film everything in one weekend. Rank your listings and work down the list, because the value of a video depends on where the listing is already losing buyers.
- High views, low orders. People find the listing but do not buy. Something about the product is unclear, and a walkthrough is a direct way to clear it up. Start here.
- Complex or editable products. Templates, planners with hyperlinks and spreadsheets generate the most questions before purchase. Video answers them without the buyer sending a message.
- Bestsellers. A listing that already sells may sell a little better with video, and it gets the most traffic to learn from.
- Low views. Leave these until last. A video on a listing nobody sees changes nothing; fix the title, tags and first photo first.
Tools you need (probably already installed)
You do not need a camera, lights or editing software that costs money. Most computers, tablets and phones include a screen recorder, and most include a basic trimming tool. What you need is a repeatable setup:
- A screen recorder that can capture a selected area rather than the whole screen, so the video already has roughly the right shape.
- A trimming and cropping tool to cut the clip to 15 seconds and match the orientation of your first listing photo.
- A way to add text overlays. Many video editors and design tools, Canva included, can add a few words over a clip and export MP4.
- A clean workspace on screen. A neutral desktop background, hidden bookmarks bar, notifications off and a large cursor if your recorder supports it.
Save your setup as a checklist. The second video takes a fraction of the time of the first when the zoom level, recording area and export settings are already decided.
Video or photos: which to fix first?
Photos come first, every time. The first listing photo is what appears in search results, so it decides whether anyone opens the listing at all. Video only plays for people who already clicked. Etsy's help center also notes that a main image that is too dark, blurry or part of a collage may cause the listing to appear lower in search results, which is a stronger reason to fix weak photos before adding anything new.
A sensible order for a digital listing is: a clear hero image, an image showing everything included, close-ups of the best pages, a sizes and formats image, then the video. If your photos still need work, our guide to selling digital products on Etsy covers the full listing, and the mockup tutorial linked above covers the images.
Reusing the clip beyond Etsy
A silent 15-second product walkthrough is useful well beyond the listing. The same footage can become a short-form post, a pin or a clip in your newsletter, with a different crop for each. Record at the highest resolution your setup allows and keep the untrimmed take, so you can recut it later without recording again. Add audio or a voiceover on platforms that play sound, and keep the Etsy version silent and self-explanatory.
Mistakes that waste a listing video
- Relying on voiceover. Etsy strips audio, so a narrated walkthrough plays silent.
- Scrolling too fast. A blur of pages proves nothing. Pause on two or three pages long enough to read the headings.
- Showing what the buyer will not get. If the video shows a feature, bonus page or app the purchase does not include, expect refund requests.
- Leaving it portrait by default. A 9:16 phone video next to a landscape first photo looks out of place.
- Over-styling. The handbook advises against filters that change colors; buyers need an accurate view of the product.
- Exposing private data. Check every frame for email addresses, file paths, client names and notifications.
Do this week
- Pick the listing with the most views and the fewest orders
- Write the four beats: cover, flip-through, proof of function, end frame
- Record two takes with notifications turned off
- Trim to 15 seconds or less and crop to match your first photo
- Add two or three short text overlays; assume no sound
- Export MP4 at 1080px or more and under 100MB
- Upload, check the preview on phone and desktop, and note the date
Etsy listing videos for digital products: FAQ
Can you add a video to an Etsy digital product listing?
Yes. Etsy listing videos work the same for digital and physical items. You add them in Shop Manager under Listings, in the Photo and video section, or from the Etsy Seller app. Etsy allows up to two videos per listing. For a digital product, a short screen recording of the file being scrolled or edited is the simplest kind to make.
What are the Etsy listing video specs?
Etsy help says listing videos can be up to 100MB in MP4, MOV, FLV, AAC, AVI, 3GP or MPEG format, 3 to 15 seconds long, with a minimum resolution of 500px and an ideal of at least 1080px. Audio is removed on upload. Its seller handbook advises 5 to 15 seconds and notes that longer videos are clipped. Checked October 2026.
Do Etsy listing videos increase sales?
Etsy does not publish a sales uplift figure. Its help center says videos give shoppers a better idea of products and can help improve how listings appear in Etsy search, and its seller handbook cites a 2018 study of Etsy buyers that found video adds transparency and builds trust. For digital products, measure it yourself by comparing listing views and conversion before and after.
Does Etsy listing video have sound?
No. Etsy removes audio from listing videos once they are uploaded, so narration and music do not play. Put any instructions on screen as short text overlays, and make sure the video makes sense with no sound at all. This also means you can record a screen walkthrough without worrying about background noise or voiceover quality.
What should a digital product listing video show?
Show what a buyer cannot judge from still images: how many pages there are, what the inside looks like, and how editing works. A fast flip-through of a PDF or planner, a cursor typing into an editable template, and a final frame with the product name cover most digital products. Keep text overlays short enough to read in under two seconds.
How do I make an Etsy video for printables without a camera?
Use a screen recording. Open the PDF or template on your computer, use the built-in screen recorder, scroll or click through the key pages, then trim the clip to 15 seconds or less and crop it to match your first listing photo. Export it as MP4 at 1080px or more and upload it in the Photo and video section of the listing.
