Quick answer

To make wall art printables, build one 2:3 master at 7200 by 10800 pixels, keep the subject inside the middle 83% of its height, and crop it into five ratio files: 2:3, ISO A, 3:4, 11 by 14 and 4:5. Export each as an sRGB JPG sized for its largest frame, then pack the files and a one-page print guide into the five slots an Etsy digital listing allows.

To make wall art printables, build one master file at a 2:3 ratio and 7200 by 10800 pixels, keep the important parts of the artwork inside the middle 83% of its height, and crop that master into five ratio files: 2:3, ISO A, 3:4, 11 by 14 and 4:5. Export each one as an sRGB JPG sized for its largest frame, and the set packs, with a one-page print guide, into the five file slots of a single Etsy digital listing.

Checked October 2026 against Etsy Help on digital listings and Etsy's stance on AI creations; Mpix on preparing photos and upload requirements; Printful's print file guide; Midjourney's documentation on image size and resolution and upscalers; Adobe's Crop tool options; and Canva's help pages on design size limits, download quality, uploads and products for sale. The safe zone, the 150 DPI floor and the bundle layout are our arithmetic and working practice, not platform rules.

A frame is a shape before it is a size. An 8 by 10 and a 24 by 36 are different proportions, so a file made for one crops badly in the other, and the buyer finds out at the print counter. This page solves that once, at the file level. For what to draw and who buys it, see our printable wall art niches; for fees, listings and the first sales, the hub is our printables business guide.

What you will have at the end

One artwork becomes six files: five images that between them fit almost every frame on sale, and a guide that tells the buyer which one to print.

Before you start

Prerequisites
  • Artwork you have the right to sell: your own painting, drawing, photo or an AI image from your own prompt
  • A source file with enough pixels, or a plan to upscale it before you crop anything
  • An image editor with a fixed-ratio crop tool and JPG export
  • A document set to sRGB at 8 bits per channel, the color setup consumer print labs ask for
  • Something to make a one-page PDF with, for the print guide
  • Budget for one real test print at the largest size you plan to advertise

Wall art printable sizes: five ratios cover almost every frame

Sell ratios, not sizes. Frames come in a handful of proportions, and every size inside one proportion prints from the same file. Five files cover the inch sizes sold in the United States and the A-series and centimetre frames sold nearly everywhere else.

Ratio fileFrames it fitsExport at (300 DPI)Trimmed from the 2:3 master

4:54 x 5, 8 x 10, 16 x 20 in4800 x 6000 px16.7% of the height

Read the last column from the bottom. The 4:5 file is the squattest shape, and it loses one sixth of the master's height: 900 pixels from the top and 900 from the bottom on a centered crop. Anything inside the middle 9000 pixels survives all five ratios. That band is the safe zone, and it is the only composition rule in this tutorial.

Cropping in from a tall master is the default. Some artwork suits the opposite approach.

Two ways to reach five ratios
Crop in from a tall master
  • Build at 2:3, the tallest ratio
  • Keep the full width; trim the top and bottom
  • Suits paintings, photos, patterns and AI images that fill the frame
  • Costs up to one sixth of the height
  • No new artwork needed
Extend out from a compact design
  • Build the subject at 4:5, the squattest ratio
  • Add canvas above and below for the taller ratios
  • Suits line art, typography and one object on a plain ground
  • Nothing is cropped; the margins grow
  • Needs a background you can extend cleanly

How to make wall art printables: the eight steps

From one artwork to five print-ready files
  1. 1
    Set up the 2:3 master

    7200 x 10800 px, sRGB, 8-bit.

  2. 2
    Mark the safe zone

Guides 900 px in from the top and bottom edges.

  3. 3
Check the pixels you really have

Upscale small or AI-generated art before anything else.

  4. 4
    Crop the five ratios

Full width, trimmed height, master left untouched.

  5. 5
Resize each crop to its export size

One file per ratio, sized for its largest frame.

  6. 6
    Export as JPG

sRGB, 8-bit, high quality, every file under 20MB.

  7. 7
Name the files and write the print guide

The frame sizes go in the file name.

  8. 8
    Test before you list

Check pixel sizes, then put ink on paper.

Steps 1 and 2: the master and its safe zone

Create a document at 7200 by 10800 pixels, in sRGB, at 8 bits per channel. That is 24 by 36 inches at 300 DPI: the largest common frame in the tallest common ratio, so every other file can be cut from it. Drag two horizontal guides to 900 and 9900 pixels. Compose so the subject, any lettering and your signature sit between them. Sky, floor, background wash and pattern can run to the edges, because that is what the crops will eat.

Expected result: a 2:3 master where everything that matters sits between the two guides.

Step 3: check the pixels you really have

Open the image size dialog and read the pixel dimensions, not the DPI field. DPI is a label; pixels are the material. This matters most for AI art. Midjourney's documentation lists a 2:3 image from its V8.2 model at 896 by 1344 pixels, and 1792 by 2688 once upscaled. At 300 DPI that is a print of about 6 by 9 inches, and Midjourney itself points to third-party upscaling tools for anything larger.

Expected result: a master with 7200 by 10800 real pixels, checked at 100% zoom, or a decision to advertise a smaller largest size.

Steps 4 and 5: crop, then resize

Use a crop tool that holds a fixed ratio. In Photoshop, the Crop tool's options bar has a ratio menu with presets that include 2:3 and 4:5, and you can type your own values; turning off Delete Cropped Pixels keeps the trimmed area in the file. Enter the export size from the table as the ratio (7016 to 9933 for ISO, 3300 to 4200 for 11 by 14), stretch the crop to the full width, slide it up or down to keep the best part of the image, and save each crop as its own copy.

Then resize each copy down to its export size. Downsizing costs nothing you can see and keeps the files light. If you build in Canva, the method is different: one design per ratio, covered in the Canva section below.

Expected result: five files at exactly the pixel sizes in the table, and an untouched master.

Step 6: export as JPG

Export each file as a JPG in sRGB at 8 bits. Mpix, a US photo lab, says it prints from JPEG files, asks for sRGB in 8-bit color, and tells customers to avoid CMYK and layered files. Printful asks for sRGB too. Use a high quality setting, then look at the file size. Etsy's limit is 20MB per file, and a detailed 7200 by 10800 image can pass it at maximum quality. If it does, drop the quality one step and export again. Do not shrink the pixel size to save megabytes.

Expected result: five JPGs, each under 20MB, each opening at the pixel size in the table.

Steps 7 and 8: name, guide, test

Etsy shows buyers your file names exactly as uploaded, limits them to 70 characters, and does not let you edit them afterwards. Put the answer to the buyer's only question in the name: 2x3-ratio-prints-up-to-24x36in.jpg. Then write the print guide, a single page that lists each file, the frame sizes it fits, and the instruction to order the print at the frame's exact size with any auto-crop or fit option turned off.

For the test, cut a 2550 by 3300 pixel piece out of the 24 by 36 file and print it at 100% on Letter paper. That sheet shows the sharpness a buyer will see with their nose against the big print, for the price of one page. Before you advertise 24 by 36, order one from a lab as well.

Expected result: a printed sample you would hang yourself, and a guide a stranger can follow.

Resolution minimums for 24 x 36 printing

Build to 300 DPI, treat 150 DPI as the floor for a file you charge for, and do not confuse either with what a lab will accept. Labs publish much lower minimums, because they would rather print a soft poster than turn an order away.

Mpix lists 6000 x 9000 px as optimal and 2400 x 3600 px as the minimum for 24 x 36. Printful accepts paper files from 75 DPI and strongly recommends 300. Source: Mpix and Printful file guidelines, Midjourney documentation, checked October 2026

Mpix says its printers output at 250 ppi, which is why its optimal figure sits just under ours. Midjourney's own documentation makes the case for the middle of the chart: printing "usually requires around 300 DPI for the best quality", while some posters hold up at 150 DPI "because they are viewed from further away". A 24 by 36 over a sofa is that poster. An 8 by 10 on a desk is not, so the small sizes matter as much as the large one.

Make printable wall art to sell in Canva: what works and what does not

Canva works as the layout tool, not as the source of the art. Its help page says "You can only sell original designs", and it uses a poster as its example of what fails: a design that is a single library photo with a border is standalone use. The same seller can use "her own photos that she uploads to Canva". Type, shapes and your own uploads arranged into a design are fine; one Canva illustration in a frame is not.

Size is the second limit. Canva caps a design at 8000 by 3125 pixels, so a 7200 by 10800 pixel canvas is not possible. Set the design up in inches instead, where 24 by 36 is one of the poster sizes Canva lists, and download it as PDF Print, which Canva calls "the only file type that saves at professional print quality (300 DPI)". Uploads can be up to 50MB and 250 million total pixels, so a full-size master fits. Canva also warns that low-quality images "may still look blurry in a PDF Print": the export cannot add pixels your upload never had.

The practical result is a bundle of five PDFs, one design per ratio, which suits typographic and graphic prints. Say "PDF files" in the listing. For painted, photographic or AI art, finish in an image editor and ship JPGs, since that is what consumer labs ask for.

The delivery bundle: six files in five slots

An Etsy digital listing takes up to five files of 20MB each, and Etsy does not allow variations on digital items, so a buyer cannot pick a size at checkout. Everything ships in one listing. Five images and a guide make six files, so the two smallest share a ZIP.

SlotFile nameWhat is inside
100-start-here-print-guide.pdfOne page: which file fits which frame, how to order a print, a color note, your terms

The 4:5 and 11 by 14 files together hold about 43 megapixels against 78 for the 2:3 file alone, so the ZIP is usually the lighter upload. Check it anyway. The guide is named to read as the first thing to open, because it is the one file every buyer needs.

Sets multiply the problem. A set of three is fifteen images. Keep the same five slots and make each one a ZIP for a single ratio, with the files numbered 01, 02, 03 from left to right so the set hangs in the order your mockup shows. Use the same crop position on every print in the set, or the horizons will not line up on the wall. Three full-size JPGs rarely fit in a 20MB ZIP. When they do not, lower the JPG quality one step, cap the set at a smaller largest size, or ship a PDF that links to a folder you host, which our guide to delivering files through Google Drive covers.

Sell art prints digitally: the listing around the files

On Etsy, choose Digital files as the item type and upload the bundle when you create the listing. Three details then carry most of the weight.

  • Say every size, twice. Once in the first lines of the description and once in a listing image that shows the five ratios and their frames. Buyers scan images before text.
  • Show the wall, to scale. The buyer is judging a room, not a file. Our guide to making mockups in Canva shows how to build the scene from your own art.
  • Disclose AI. Etsy allows art made with AI tools from your own prompts, and its policy says sellers "must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI". Our page on Etsy's AI rules has wording you can adapt.

Price the single and the set before you design the second collection. Etsy's fixed per-sale charges weigh most on cheap singles, and the free Etsy profit margin calculator shows the gap at your own prices. From there the work is the catalog, and our Digital Products program goes further than a file tutorial can: competitor analysis before the next collection, pricing, and the upsell from one print to the full wall.

Troubleshooting: what buyers report and what caused it

  • "It is blurry at the big size." The file has fewer real pixels than the listing implies, usually after an enlargement. Rebuild from a true master or lower the largest size you advertise.
  • "The top got cut off." Something important sat outside the safe zone, or the lab's auto-crop was left on. Move the element, and add the auto-crop line to the guide.
  • "Which file is for my 50 x 70 frame?" The ISO file. If buyers keep asking, the print guide or the file names are not doing their job.
  • "The lab would not take the file." It was CMYK, 16-bit, layered or a PDF. Export an sRGB JPG at 8 bits.
  • "The print is darker than the picture." Paper is not backlit. Say so in the guide, and judge your own colors from the test print, not the screen.
  • "The upload failed." A file passed 20MB. Drop the JPG quality one step; the pixel size stays.
Pre-flight before you publish
  • Master is 7200 x 10800 px in sRGB, with real detail at 100% zoom
  • Subject, lettering and signature sit inside the middle 9000 px of the height
  • Five ratio files exported at the pixel sizes in the table
  • Every JPG and ZIP is under 20MB
  • File names state the ratio and the largest frame, in 70 characters or fewer
  • The print guide lists each file, its frames and the no-auto-crop instruction
  • A Letter-sized section of the largest file has been printed at 100%
  • The largest advertised size is one the pixels support
  • The artwork is yours, and any AI use is disclosed in the description

Making wall art printables: FAQ

How do I make wall art printables to sell?

Build one master file at a 2:3 ratio and 7200 by 10800 pixels, keep the subject inside the middle of the canvas, and crop that master into five ratio files: 2:3, ISO A, 3:4, 11 by 14 and 4:5. Resize each crop to its largest frame at 300 DPI, export it as an sRGB JPG, and name it for the frames it fits. The artwork has to be your own.

What sizes should printable wall art include?

Sell ratios, not sizes. Five files cover almost every frame: 2:3 for 4 by 6 up to 24 by 36 inches, 3:4 for 9 by 12 and 18 by 24, 4:5 for 8 by 10 and 16 by 20, a separate 11 by 14, and the ISO ratio for A5 to A1. The ISO file also fits 5 by 7 inch and 50 by 70 cm frames with a sliver trimmed.

What resolution do I need for a 24 x 36 inch print?

Build to 7200 by 10800 pixels, which is 300 DPI. Published lab figures run lower: Mpix lists 6000 by 9000 pixels as optimal and 2400 by 3600 as its minimum for a 24 by 36 print, and Printful accepts paper files from 75 DPI while strongly recommending 300. Treat 3600 by 5400 pixels, 150 DPI, as the floor for a file you charge for. Checked October 2026.

Can I make printable wall art in Canva?

Yes, for original designs. Canva says you can only sell original designs, and a single library photo with a border counts as standalone use, which is not allowed. Your own uploaded artwork is fine. Canva caps a design at 8000 by 3125 pixels, so set the size in inches and download as PDF Print, the one Canva file type that saves at 300 DPI. Checked October 2026.

Can I sell AI-generated wall art as a printable?

On Etsy, yes: it allows artwork made with AI tools from your own prompts, and requires you to say so in the listing description. The problem is size. Midjourney documents a 2:3 image from its V8.2 model as 1792 by 2688 pixels once upscaled, about 6 by 9 inches at 300 DPI. Upscale with a dedicated tool and inspect the result before you promise large prints. Checked October 2026.

What file format should printable wall art be?

JPG in the sRGB color space at 8 bits per channel. Mpix says it prints from JPEG files and asks for sRGB in 8-bit color, and Printful asks for sRGB too. Avoid CMYK and layered files, which consumer labs often reject. A PDF is acceptable when the design was built in Canva, but say so in the listing, because some labs only take images.

How do I fit five sizes into one Etsy listing?

An Etsy digital listing takes up to five files of 20MB each and cannot have variations, so every ratio ships together. Use one slot for a print guide, three for the 2:3, ISO and 3:4 JPGs, and the last for a ZIP holding the 4:5 and 11 by 14 files. File names can be 70 characters and cannot be edited after upload. Checked October 2026.
